Knicks · Why not Jrue Holiday ? (page 3)

TheGame @ 9/28/2023 2:47 PM
I will say two things:

First, Jrue is the reason the Bucks won the championship two years ago. Dude played out of his mind on offense and defense. Gannis was Gannis, but Jrue was the difference maker that pushed them over the top.

Second, Jrue is too old, costs too much, and does not move the needle enough for us to trade for him. I would rather wait for D Mitchell to become a FA in two years.

It’s a good point on Donovan. And he wants to be here too and will prob push for trade in about a year.

Jrue is like all defensive team and had a great season last year.
He'd be great next to Brunson!
But......33 and that contract. He can opt out after next year so he likely leverages that into a two year extension.
I have no qualms about him being a knick. My beef would be his age and money.

What's the point of speculating regarding just about any quality player who becomes available? Especially one that has neither a positional nor a generational fit with what the team is looking to do right now.
These times are over, and people should have some more dignity now.

I love this board for its breadth of personalities, opinions, and takes - and the occasional Jane Austen reference to go with the Alba drool festing. And of course knowledgeable analysis, but who cares about that? And certainly I agree with the analogy. I'll add there is a clickbait cottage industry created just to feed fan neurosis. You can tell we're creeping up on the season because the "trade everything for a star even a mediocre one" "articles" are dropping like Autumn leaves.

Go New York Go New York Go!

Hell yeah, Jane Austin threads please. Book club maybe ? Although I'd prefer a Charles Dickens discussion. My favorite English language author of the past. The references and diversity of characters in his books includes all types of psychological insight into individual personality and societal classes

I am actually okay with his age and his contract.
However, not okay with giving up significant assets for him.
Believe the FO will stay the course and look to give up assets only for a true difference maker.
Which I don't believe he is. Despite my affection for his clutch play.
Thing that worries me, or maybe not, is if the Knicks
decide to trade IQ, since he is due some decent money, a couple of picks and our beloved Frenchman for Jrue. Would miss one of my favorite players. Not EF

Everyone has included him in trades for stars like DMitchell, Giannis, Dame, Harden, Lavine, Derozan, George to secondary stars/high quality role players like OG, now Holiday, Grant to lower end talent like Bogdanovic, draft picks, Keldon Johnson.....

If that is not the definition versatility I don't know what is.

He’s a young player on a reasonable contract that can play multiple positions. It makes sense.

Makes sense to have a ball park of the quality of player he is getting traded for. People want him as the main piece for stars to the 12th man. It's crazy.

more like a fan base willing to trade RJ for anything lol. He's so versatile Knick fans will trade him for ANYONE

He in the "Randle tradeable Zone" from the last few years.
WE don't really think RJ contributed to the 47 win and 2nd round season?
Fact is as 3rd option and his inconsistency makes him expendable for star. In some aspects I agree.
Im not that blind! LOL.........
Evan is hostage trade fodder and RJ is the young starter. Add 2-4 picks and your got something. Problem is as much as we love Josh Hart, he is limited offensively and RJ still has yet to hit his ceiling. He is not that far off, but im sure the Coaches understand the deal more than we do. We know the stat line that makes him valuable. What we don't know is how to get him there besides "more is better".

Some players take years. I remember I thought GS was crazy for trading MEllis and keeping glass ankles Curry. Boy was I wrong.

I actually am more interested in watching RJ as a backup PF than I am at his spot at the wing. Dimension wise Tatum is 6-8, 210 with a 6-11 wingspan. RJ is Barrett is 6-6, 214. with a 6-10 wingspan.

I'm not saying it's a sure thing but it is possible he can play the PF spot. I am very intrigued with this possibility.

I hope we keep RJ long term. But we would be crazy not to trade him for a 2-way star. For all his upside, the Knicks were better statistically when he was off the floor last year. I do think that will improve though.

Is Jrue that guy tho? Nice player but 1: We already have bunch of guys in the 6'3" to 6'5" range who play defense and hit the three at a decent rate and 2:We already have a top notch lead ballhandler. Holidays overall skillet is kind of redundant. We don't need another combo guard. Including RJ in a deal for Holiday would make this lineup even smaller. Fournier, IQ or Grimes would make more sense in a potential Holiday deal. I'm pretty sure that IQ wouldn't interest Portland, especially if he's extended. I'm not sure a deal makes roster sense for the Knicks unless IQ is included.

I agree with the bolded. but I'm not trading major assets for another guard. Fournier and Hartenstein or Mitch. no draft picks. Hartenstein is going to walk to a bigger contract if he plays well after the year. If they decide iHart is the better fit, build a deal around Mitch and Fournier and try to exchange draft picks going both ways.

Chandler @ 9/29/2023 10:13 AM
I like Jrue. (And FWIW i see it as a risky move for the Bucks)

BUT we have bigger priorities IMO: (1) serious upgrade in shooting, (2) upgrade SF, (3) keep powder dry for bona fide super star (not former SS or great player).

stay disciplined

MS @ 9/29/2023 11:34 AM
Let’s hope Thibs uses the guys we have effectively this season.

There is another level for Grimes and IQ this year. He needs to cut brunsons minutes down get him more off ball opportunities, more transition threes and pick the pace up. We have a lot of depth there is no reason to be pounding the ball again.

We have unselfish guys in DD, Hart, IHart and they can all pass.

It’s a guarantee that Obi will look like a different player this year in a system that maximizes what he does well. We have the guys just need to put them on the right positions with the right opportunities.

Keep our guys fresh and push the pace. We don’t need Holiday we have Grimes making nothing.

Knixkik @ 9/29/2023 12:37 PM
One thing I will mention, if the Knicks are committed to going after d Mitchell next offseason they probably pass on Jrue. So we will see.

nah... unless he get's angry he's just not scary. He's a good offensive player for sure.. so when guys says stuff like "Indiana will maximize his skills" what they are really saying is give him minutes, shots, and live with the weak defense. That just wasnt going to happen here. I always liked Obi, but also saw enough of him to be ready to move on. He's not trash but he's not the right/player for this squad. I love giving RJ/Hart those minutes and adding DD as the 9th guy.
We have no depth at PF, but that's the league. Feels like we have depth where you need it the most. 2 way guards and rim protection

Not trading one of our rotation bigs for yet another guard. Gotta be a guard in the trade. You going to play all of JB, Jrue, DDV, Grimes, IQ and have only Sims as a backup big with any size?

fishmike @ 9/29/2023 1:32 PM
we literally have the younger version of Holiday. It's IQ. Same size. Same versatility, same liabilities... (struggles m2m vs. bigger guards/players) I am not going to equate IQ's 20ish great games last year as a starter to being as good as Holiday. That being said that is the exact profile for IQ. Lets lock him up and see what we have. I have a feeling both Grimes and IQ are gonna have eye popping years

These guys are just too good for team culture. I hope they're still Knicks when we win the championship.

The coda to all of this

MS @ 10/1/2023 3:44 PM
Grimes and IQ are two of the best young defensive guards in the league.

Portland just destroyed both trades, best work by a GM in a very long time.

Happy we kept our guys and didn’t panic. We obviously went from right at the top to a tier below, but let’s see if Thibs can stagger minutes and give us that Nuggets look after the Melo trade with two different units.

Feel good about not panicking and losing our assets.

JesseDark @ 10/1/2023 3:55 PM
Since wwe miissed out on Jrue, if its any consolation, I just saw a Buddy Hield for Evan Fournier rumor.

Not happening. Just doesn't make sense in terms of roster fit (Thibs) or future cap flexibility (Aller).

In agreement here. For the Bucks and Celtics it remains to be seen. I make no definitive statements, and I understand the "go for it" sentiment of these two teams - but taking on highly paid and aging Lillard and Jrue (to go with perpetually breaking down KP) while giving up significant assets and cap space and in the Celtics' case a lot of their depth could backfire.

I too am again tickled our FO hasn't panicked made this type of move. Not predicting but I certainly don't see it as impossible that Bucks and Celts get a little burned here and with Knicks younguns taking steps and current depth we sneak ahead. Just sayin'.
