Knicks · Why did we trade Obi Toppin ? (page 10)

he missed on in game 6 versus the Bucks

i know he's trying to energize the team but that was a dumb time to do that. Imagined if he blew it???

I can see doing it at home to get the crowd going.
But on the road against your former team who you had a blowup with the coach???
I get it but now he solidified himself as the enemy.

He does fit that team nice. Too bad they gave us shizz for him.

I’m sorry - this notion that the Knicks got “shizz ” for Obi and the implication that better offers were somehow ignored keeps being bandied about is uh…ridiculous. But I guess posting whatever the hell pops into your head is what we do. I’ve done it.

So we got two two’s for him - some fans think that better offers could be had. Please identify them and explain why the FO took a lesser offer. More importantly, Obi was traded and DDV signed. Would have been over the cap without the trade. So game changing DDV and two two’s for Obi who can dunk but doesn’t play D. I’m in.

But you know, it was shizz.

agreed, maybe there was a slightly better offer out there and we did him a favor by sending him to IND, but I doubt anyone was willing to give a 1st for him.

Why did we trade him? That showboat dunk in a close playoff game is a perfect example of why. the same dunk he missed last time at MSG... and he risked missing it again just to showboat.

Nalod @ 5/7/2024 1:20 PM
I'll do DDV and Two 2nds for Obi in hindsight any time! Great move by our FO.
The dunk?
He did not miss. He has fam in the building. He is from here. I thought it was great.
Maybe his coach lets him. Maybe Rick has no issues. Did they lose the game? Any game he misses?
Doe it give his team energy?
The kid played well. His team did not win, but he showed up. Good for him. Good for Knicks, and good for the Toppins!

If indeed the FO did Obi a solid, which is pure speculation, I wouldn't consider it a bad thing. Maybe a good thing in terms of attracting players. My main point though is it wasn't just two second rounders. It was two second rounders AND DDV. Instead of Obi. Worth it I'd say.

I guess what stings is just HOW BAD the secondrounders are. I mean might as well have been rights to sign 2 UFAs

Or it is a bad thing. With CAA it's family first. That's family first before team

Indiana was rumored for Obi for over a year. I truly believe that was Obi 's perceived value. We got the Cam Reddish special.

KnickDanger @ 5/7/2024 3:53 PM
And no one wants to acknowledge the trade was also made to create space to sign DDV. You know, chess not checkers.

I could be wrong but I think we had the MLE regardless. Can't really equate getting DDV b/c we traded Obi.

DDV's contract is way above the MLE. Four years $50 million. Obi signed for about 7 million this year, 9 next. Reading MLE max is $5 million. That is if you are over the Luxury Tax Threshold. Knicks didn't want to go there. Reading articles at the time the two moves were clearly coordinated.

Anyway, I know folks don't like to let go of narratives, but "Obi for 2 seconds was a shizz job" is just a lame analysis.

I'm done!

It sure would be nice to have some scoring off the bench in the playoffs. Obi has the one ability you need this time of year - availability.

Tough to predict you’d be down your starting 4 and backup 4.

it was a MLE contract. That $5mm number is for tax payers which Knicks were not. We did not have cap space. Not sure if Obi helped avoid tax or not.

Sorry, please remind me who our back up 4 is? The back end of our roster is getting healthy DNP’s and is trash. Like not even NBA level scrub trash.

Full MLE is about $12m and that's what we signed DDV with, we didn't sign him with cap space because we had none even after trading Obi.

Not my understanding from what I've read but I have been wrong before. Regardless, the Obi regret seems very misplaced.

The only regret is that we didn’t get any usable assets back. It was a giveaway of another lottery pick.

Once we used MLE, we were hard capped at 172mm. The Obi dump allowed us to drop to about $162mm of salary leaving room to navigate the season and make trades leading up to the trade deadline. It didn’t provide cap space but it provided flexibility below the Hard Cap.
