I do think one of the beat guys did clarify this quote although I don't have it in front of me: He was responding to a question of whether he would be a backup PF (with Josh Hart), not come off bench.
The aggregators got the quote wrong.

Now, if the team starts off 3-11 and its clear RJ is stinking up the joint then yeah.
But I doubt there has been any lines written in stone or he starts the season off the bench.
The media was trying to bait RJ into making a selfish comment so they can have their headline imo. RJ is not coming off the bench.
