Knicks · I don’t get the recent KAT chatter, if that is a thing. (page 2)

Leon was his agent, Rosas was GM in Minny. Thats a lot of love there. Dolan don’t know the kid.
Not like Dolan would hug it out anyway.

They built it with edwards, but RUDY is NOW as is KAT. Same for Conley. Edwards and Daniels are the future but they are needed now.
I like what they are doing and my guess is they need a full year with a healthy KAT and see where it goes before deciding.
If Phila can’t get anything for Harden and they step backwards I’d think it would be mutually beneficial for both the team and Joel to want a deal.

Minnesota's future lies with Anthony Edwards so it makes sense to trade KAT for guys on his timeline. RJ Hartenstein and IQ get the Knicks to KAT's salary. Conley's contract expires next year, so Wolves could give him Conley's money.

Randle can match up with a lot of forwards on D, like Jimmy Butler and Tatum. Knicks would have to toss on a bunch of picks but a crunch time line up of Brunson Hart Randle KAT with Robinson or Grimes depending on the matchup would be a potential championship squad.

Knicks have a strong philosophy of defense down the middle starting at center. You think the Knicks think Randle/KAT pairing will fulfill that?

I think they could play some big lineups with Randle KAT and Robinson. Since KAT and Randle both shoot 3's you wouldn't have huge spacing issues on offense. The biggest problem is with Robinson's erratic free throw shooting it can be a problem in end game situations. I think one of the reasons he taps it out so much is he doesn't want to get fouled with the ball in his hand.

Again, how does that fit their defensive philosophy. I don’t think anyone has Randle and KAT as their defensive back line.

Roster building at this juncture is not a crapshoot or maybe situation. It’s a philosophy and plan.

I'm no Randle fan and I wouldn't even trade him straight up for KAT. Hate KAT's soft game.
Chandler @ 10/16/2023 10:22 AM
Knicks need clutch shooting and a go-to guy (in addition to Jalen)

Jules has done a lot of good things for us but still feel he tightens up in key moments.

Bagley reports today that Knicks were talking with Portland about trading Robinson for multiple picks. My main point is that a Knicks trade for KAT would be adding him to Randle and Brunson. The attraction of playing with Randle is one of the big draws for KAT.

I dont think that's a good interpretation of what Bagley is stating. Could you point us to the article you are getting your info from cause I have not seen that.

Also, KAT is under contract, there is no need to draw him or attract him to Randle. If you want KAT on team, you just trade whatever for him if that makes sense for the team.

And a combo of Randle and KAT doesn't make sense to me at least.

Right, but you left out the lead of the article: How important Mitch is to the entire team, both on offense and defense. That's the underlying important part IMHO.

If you ask a Knick player or coach about Mitchell Robinson, you usually hear some variation of the same answer. They talk about his importance to the team and his nuanced impact on the game.

“The things that he brings to our team oftentimes you’re not going to measure in a boxscore,” Tom Thibodeau said during training camp. “Where he has great value is rim protection, he’s top five in the league; offensive rebounding, top five in the league; total rebounding, top five in the league; terrific pick and roll defender; great pressure on the rim; getting out of screens.

“And when you have somebody that gets out of screens like that, he’s bringing bodies with him which is opening up the floor for us. So it’s forcing the defense to collapse and I think when you really study it, I think four years ago he had a negative net rating and last year you look at his net rating and it’s over five. So it’s almost a 10-point improvement per 48 minutes, that’s significant.”

Robinson’s significance for this year’s Knicks team can’t be overstated, and he seems primed to have another high-impact year.

Yeah, but I didn't consider that part news. Anyone who's watched the team over a number of years could tell you that. My biggest thing is how quickly Mitch's defensive IQ has grown during his time hear. I'm amazed at how much better he's gotten at recognizing rotations and making reads. We had one a lottery pick come in as a 22 year old rookie who was never able to pick it up and a All NBA power forward who still struggles with it from time to time.

Def not new but definitely of importance.

And you right on the defensive IQ things. I didn't think he'd get this much better. And this much stronger while keeping most of his quickness.

Watching the evolution of Mitch has been a delight. But I do wish they'd focus on adding some offense awareness. But maybe that'll come soon enough. I hope he and Brunson get a better connection going, feel like McBride does that so well.

LOL, on a team with low percentage shooters, you need a guy who can clean up the Offensive glass. Mitch is invaluable to this tea and that can't be overstated

And a big no to KAT. He is not an upgrade over Randle.

Nalod @ 10/16/2023 2:42 PM
Nobody likes KAT, but he got that max deal somehow?
3x all star?
Has he evolved?
Im not sold on him either, but looky at Randle and Brunson and how they stepped it up.
It happens. Im keeping on open mind.
Thing is, and I agree, it depends on the cost and who is on the roster.
Im guessing if all are healthy apples to apples, Minny might have a better record. Edwards is a budding star, Rudy has to be better then he was last year, and KAT should play more then the 29 games he did last year. McDaniels is a good player and Conley need not be great to lead the team well. Health? all teams need it!
Depth? Well, in todays NBA its not easy to have it if you are paying on a starting 5. We have it, but our starting unit is not quite to their level.
Two paths and always interesting.

There will always be an itch for the big move, nothing you can do about that. I really feel now is not the time. Seeing if the current group can grow and make a step or two seems a lot more prudent than throwing the dice on a KAT, Mitchell, Emblid, etc. I get there is no fun in that.

How about this take?

I feel like the Knicks need 1 big wing and/or 1 more player who is on Brunson's level (or where we think he will end up).

Maybe those 2 players come from the roster and just wildly develop (RJ, Grimes, IQ, or someone else) or maybe you trade for someone when they become available.

Donovan Michell, Jrue Holiday just wasn't right roster wise or trading assets for but maybe Embiid type would be if he came up at the right price.

I’m not against making moves. I’m good with the moves of the summer which was essentially losing Obi and gaining DDV. And getting JHart last year. But yeah, I’m thinking among the young players you mentioned some maybe even all take big steps to put the Knicks on the next level. Whereas trading a couple of them plus picks….well that is the roll of the dice. Not one I want personally.

I would think if Kat is coming Randle would be going (at least somewhere) but Randle would actually fit in Minny next to Gobert and off of Ant.

Towns/Randle combo sounds yuck and it’s really because you really can’t count on Randle to function in playoffs or defend hard all the time.

Issue with Kat to Knicks would be could he fit with Mitch? Not so sure there.

Thing I like about Kat is he is decisive with the ball - shoot or pass and skill level really high.

Things I don’t like are injuries, soft around rim and defensive effort.

Still think Julius limits any legit past 2nd round dreams we may have because he doesn’t fit smoothly with others or defend.
