In my first referenced post, (2022) I mentioned several reasons why we needed to upgrade at SG going into the playoffs. Mainly, because Grimes was just not enough on offense to build an aggressive, well rounded starting five offensively. It was not a knock on Grimes, being early in his career, but a desire to have multiple guys for defenses to contend with. I said at the time that Grimes was not aggressive enough, needed to create off dribble, rushed his outside shot and did not have that attack killer mentality. Also mentioned that it hurt Grimes development to be in a first unit with so many Alphas.
We see today how much better IQ is with starting unit. (Move I called for) We see how much better Devo is with starting unit. Which is great news because I believe they are the upgrades we needed. At least until a elite one becomes available at a reasonable price. And unfortunately, we see how Grimes development has hit a snag.
With that said, still believe it is not too late. Feel IQ with first unit is still what is needed to take place. Put Grimes in the second unit and force him to be more aggressive on offense and be more than a spot up, in the corner, shooter. And for those thinking this will hurt Grimes confidence, I ask you to consider how his confidence has been affected watching Devo or IQ consistently finish games. At least by making the move it allows him to develop skills needed in the second unit to upgrade his game. I love the kid and think he has great potential. Think this is a crucial step in how the rest of his career goes. Believe he can elevate his game with the right guidance and by playing in the second unit where he will defer less.
I definitely think upgrades are in-house. Quickley is essentially our finishing SG and that’s an upgrade in itself. DDV will likely get the opportunity if there’s an in-season change though. Grimes just reminds me of Bullock from a couple years ago where he was a reliable open shooter and defender but teams can hide their worst defender on him. Lately grimes hasn’t been a reliable shooter but i understand that’s mostly in his head and the shooting will come around. Outside of that we probably wait on D Mitchell to become available, or OG and move RJ to SG.
Grimes played 16min last night. He started? We jumped to a nice lead.
He was not a detriment. If he sucks, he don't play. He didn't.
DDV and Grimes finished. Thibs is doing just fine. Goal is to get Grimes back in it. If his wrist or something else an issue, perhaps they will sit him.
Im more concerned about RJ issues if there is one. He was killing it before the "migraines".
But...Randle filled that box score up last night!

Not a panic post by no means.
The difference with IQ and Devo is obvious. And yes, Thibs sees it.
Other part is how Grimes is affected. As mentioned, move to second unit is also to develop him. Averaging less minutes per game is not an upward curve.

Not saying Grimes is a "detriment" saying Devo and IQ fit better with first unit. Reason why they finish.
As you said, Grimes played only 16 minutes. Put up how many shots ? Had the opportunity to create how many times? Point being IQ and Devo are able to get their shots up regardless of have JB, JR and RJ on the floor. Grimes does not. He would be a primary option in the second unit. Feel he needs that to develop. Feel that is why IQ is where he is today.

Watching the 4th quarter yesterday, the camera panned to the bench after a Knicks score and everyone was clapping and smiling except Grimes. He feels it. Hopefully somehow, he can work his way out of this. Or not. Maybe a bench guy is who he is supposed to be.

Bringing in DDV created options. Trade amung them.
Grimes was by someone was "Breakout player of the east".
But here is the thing with Thibs. Often he breaks players then puts them back together. We have seen this with RJ and IQ to some extent. They come back stronger.
Not all mind you. Knox and Frank are gone. There are others.
Thibs loves Grimes. But Thibs is not blind. MY point is what is he asking him to do and how is he failing to execute and why? is he making his cuts? Switches on defense? Is he looking to make passes?
We have seen Randle and even Brunson look bad at times until things click. IQ when asked to expand usually goes into a bit of a funk. Maybe Grimes is a bit fucked up about things and Thibs/Bryant are "he gotta play thru it until it clicks". If so, thats one way to look at it. Fans are usually "Replace the weak link". Not unreasonable but not the full story.
We don't know the full story. Knicks look really good at times. Different than last season. Its been uneven. Thats either a team failing to execute or evolving.
Its why they play the games. We'll know in time.

Definitely don't want him replaced, as off the team.
Never understood why some are so against certain changes if it makes both sides better.
Everyone including Thibs sees IQ and Devo as a better fit. As easy as taking Grimes aside, letting him know IQ has earned the nod and that he is needed in the second unit as primary option. If anything, this will set us up to have a better Grimes to step in if Knicks are not able to afford IQ. And if he keeps up playing the way he is, there is a big chance they will not.
I think it just makes more sense to go back to the 9 man rotation. IQ DDV and Josh Hart are all better on both sides of the ball and deserve those minutes. Knicks have been whooping on the bottom of the NBA but are consistently beat by the good teams. Grimes has been the worst rotation defender by far this season. Time to stop being sentimental and start chasing wins.
We have a lot of good shooting guards we don’t have a great one. And I consider RJ strictly a Forward
Grimes is fine.
Everybody relax.
This will force Grimes to step up.
Give him a chance to grow.
It's still early in the season.
Meanwhile, lets celebrate what Thibs does right rotation wise with IQ and DDV in the 4th. Everybody has a role and playing that role just fine. If Grimes is the only issue, we are in a great place. Grimes sucks on offense, great on defense (for the most part), and role players are finishing.
No complaints here. Keep it up.

If you look at it with different lenses, except for losses against NO, Cavs and maybe Sums (who were not at full strength but needed a last minute prayer), the Knicks have lost to Minny, the Bucks and the Celts(twice) Teams that have a chance to be in the NBA finals.

agreed. if he's our biggest issue we are in great shape. And you can't ignore his size and defense and floor spacing. even if the shot isn't going down right now teams still gotta get up close to him and guard him.
I get the feeling the FO is being really patient b/c we know DM is coming here eventually.
We are flush with assets to make that trade this summer. DET's 2nd rounder looks like it's going to be practically a late 1st. add that to the DAL pick, our own, and another 2nd we have, we have four solid picks just this year alone to add to Grimes & IQ in a potential trade for DM.

No panic in any Convo here.
About how Knicks are better when IQ or Devo at SG. And how feel IQ has earned the starting job.
Also about Grimes development. Which I think has stalled.
Wish the same as you do and hope Grimes turns it around. Just disagree that it will be in the first unit. Or that he is fine when it's looking like the Knicks may find him expendable. Many thought Frank was fine as well.
Knicks are obviously fine. As is their future.
