This is a really tough one. On one hand he can replace Barrett or Grimes in the lineup and be a true #2 option, and Randle can move down to his rightful #3 spot. It would still be Brunson’s team but DeRozan would take a lot of pressure off of him. He’s a current all-star and extremely efficient scorer. He can also play backup PF minutes with the second unit. The price would involve one of our good players but not much draft compensation. Ultimately he’s still a star player. On the other hand he’s 34 and not an ideal fit. Really nothing else to say there. It’s a problem.
He's 34 so swapping him for RJ doesn't make sense. Makes more sense in a Fournier & picks move in terms of logistics. But he doesn't shoot enough threes. A Derozan, RJ, Randle, Mitch 2-5 would end up being way to crowded thus handicapping all 4 of them at the same time.

Agree with your concerns. I wouldnt trade IQ for Derozan unless another deal was in the works to bring in a second star who isnt in his 30s. Leon deciding to go "all in". Otherwise I would want another building block in return.
Grimes trade value is too low right now to make him the centerpiece of a deal. Randle is more durable, even after ankle surgery.
Derozan has an expiring contract, so maybe some of our surplus first round picks could help grease the wheels.
Yes sign me up. Knicks are never going to make 4 picks in the draft. Derozan has a few very good years left. We definitely could put the best package together. He would be an excellent addition in the playoffs. A definite talent upgrade and maybe even someone who could keep Randle in check as a veteran presence.
As long as it doesn't include RJ or IQ I'm down.

I'd also be concerned about the Heat adding Derozan. Wouldnt be the main reason to do a trade, but it would be an added benefit of bringing him to NY. The right deal could make us contenders.

As an expiring the cost shouldn’t be to high. We have the expiring contract and the picks. The rest shouldn’t be that hard unless Chicago really has a thing for Hero

Hero isn't going for DeRozan, that much I'm sure of. Chicago is tough spot given DeRozan's age, and upcoming free agency. I think any deal will be centered on east picks and some form of salary relief. My question is fit. You bring DeRozan in and you're counting on more perimeter Randle and spacing issues with Mitch. Maybe RJ can keep it up from 3 and maybe Julius will benefit more from open jump shots. I don't know. Also, Demar sucks on defense now, not that he was ever "good."

So if it’s Grimes, Fournier and a couple of the protected picks do you do it ? He’s an upcoming free agent so his preferred landing spots matter to some degree. Do we live with losing the shooting and defense in the starting lineup by replacing grimes with DeRozan? The ceiling of that team with Barrett sliding to the SG is a little higher after that move right ?
Would be a real go for it move. He is a legit 3rd scorer - really a better 2nd option that Randle. Classic mid range guy that does nothing for our spacing issues if he's on the floor with Barrett though. Really what he bring is a better version of Barrett in every respect - plays the same role on the floor but with more consistency. So the question is do you unload Barrett to get him? Obviously that's a tough call with a 10 yr age gap.
Its hard to say no if the Cost is Fournier/Grimes and some combo of Deuce/Sims and picks. But I think RJ has to step back in his role if that's the case and you get better spacing with DDV starting and Barrett playing 25 off the bench.
This could get us close to the top though. Its intriguing. Unlike Zach I think you can DeRozan to come here and take a role and give it his all - that guy has proven to be a gamer.

This year Grimes is shooting 35.8 from 3pt and Derozan is 36.4. Grimes is 36.4 from the field this year and Derozan is 45.0
Grimes is averaging 6.3 PPG and Derozan 21.3. We aren't giving up much as far as shooting if Grimes is in the deal

No doubt about it. The only thing being grimes is a much bigger volume 3pt shooter.
right deal. Grimes, Fournier & picks- I would do that and I would keep Derozan on ice until the play offs and then dust him off!
His ability to work close to the basket, similar to Butler. I'd have him play the back up to Randle and play him with that bench group.

If DeRozan comes, he's coming to start and play big minutes and shot attempts to secure that next big contract. DeRozan brings clutch mid range shooting which is key in the playoffs and playmaking. It seems like Randle's 3 point shooting has kind of deserted him so space might be a little tight. Knicks will have to come pretty close to matching salaries because they are approaching the hard tax line.
Biggest drawback for me is age. At 34, it gets really tough to predict how many seasons he has left. Granted his game isn't based on overpowering guys but he's at the age where minor injuries linger and major ones finish his career. So combination of IQ Grimes or RJ would go the other way. I just don't see it with the roster as currently constructed.
One of the big what ifs is if Knicks signed DeRozan instead of Fournier and one of Burks Noel or Kemba back in 21. DeRozan sat in free agency for a relatively long time. I think the ship has already sailed for him coming here.
I don’t think DeRozan, Jules, RJ and Mitch is a recipe for success together on either end.
The 2 that duplicate each other are DeRozan and RJ.
Would I trade RJ for DeRozan —- NO.
But —- what if we were expanding the deal where maybe we could grab a 22 year old Pat Williams with DeRozan.
Talking RJ/Fournier for DeRozan/Williams,- trade seems to work in checker.
DeRozan slips into RJ spot in starting line-up and gives us an experienced iso scorer and Williams gives us larger wing defender with size who might not fit rotation immediately but provides some insurance for Julius/J-Hart injury and replaces some of what we might lose in RJ in terms of youthiness/upside.
Thoughts?

Having thrown the above together myself - I don’t like trade for Knicks.

It's a testament to Leon Rose how often that happens. Try as we might to improve the team, once you consider all the permutations of cap space, draft compensation, and youth most deals are better off being a pass.

I wouldn’t even want him under those circumstances. Derozan can’t shoot. Grimes can. And trading RJ for Derozan is beyond absurd
Derozan can’t shoot?! What? He shoots 46% for his career. He might not shoot 3 pointers, but he’s a closer.
The Grimes package is probably right. Would certainly hurt our defense but would give us enough offense to play small ball 4. Probably makes them the best team in the east.
Difficult to pull the trigger because will likely have to give him 3 for 90MM

DeRozan is definitely a gamer and would love to have him for the playoffs. However....
DeRozan is a mid range scorer. Already have RJ , KB and Randle clogging that.
DeRozan is a UFA in 2024. So why give up assets now?
DeRozan is 34. Does not fit long term fit.
DeRozan has been rumored to have hip issues for some time.
Knicks must be careful not to repeat their past errors where they look at the shinny objects not realizing it is too old, falling apart and it will only last a short amount of time.
Aide note, believe DeRozan would want an extension agreed to before the trade. Which would add to the asking price. Hopefully he is available after the season in FA.
