Last night’ triple double is the kind of night I think Randle can repeat regularly.
First, the bad.
7 turnovers was a lot. A few were “chemistry” issues. Precious having no expectation that the ball would be passed. Randle putting a ton of zip on the ball to squeeze it into a tight spot. Truth is, these turnovers will go down over time. The turnovers I hate are the blind side, head down, dribbling into 4 defenders turnovers. I think the game slowed down for him on the passing when he found OG under the basket despite 3 defenders. It’s a plus.
Lethargic on defense. He was a little slow footed on the close outs. Released a little early on a couple plays leaving the Knicks short handed. Not sure whose rotation allowed Grady Dock those wide open 3s in the corner, but that corner was open all night. So, not blaming Randle there, but it’s possible those were his close out. Either that or OG is covering two players at once. The ball and the corner. Thibs d sometimes leaves that corner open.
Off ball action. Kind of looking for a few more screen assists for Randle/Brunson. Feel like he could be a rich man’s Dray to Brunson’s Curry. Brunson’s 3 looks legit. Just need to get him a few more open looks.
Now the good. He was actively looking to find guys and get them involved. DDV seemed to be the best recipient of those feeds. Unlike Fournier, DDV moves really well without the ball. I’m looking for a little more chemistry with OG. A little less juice on those passes. But that click is what I wanted to see.
Rebounding. Guy is working the boards well. Putbacks. Boxes. He is an animal in the paint. His legs seem a little fatigued lately, but he is playing hard knock basketball.
Downhill basketball. I prefer his get the ball and go to the back to the basket game he falls back to. Would like to see a little more low post action. But man, when he is facing forward and pushing toward the basket, he is a force.
It’s the passing though. First team All NBA if he plays like last night all the time and works on the turnovers.

Spinover can be his signature move, but now it’s a really good thing.

Like him or not Randle is crucial to hopes of going past the first round. I too see the progress if not perfection.
And warranted or not, criticism of his defense made me think of this classic scene:
