Knicks · Precious Achiuwa... what does it cost to resign this guy? (page 1)

fishmike @ 2/13/2024 4:07 PM
25 years old next year. Not the most "skilled" guy but it looks like he's earning Thib's trust. I do not have high aspirations for him, but I think he really helps our depth. I also want to resign IHart and I want to resign Precious as well. In that situation I would give Precious the Obi minutes and he can also be the 3rd center.

I believe he's an RFA so we have his bird rights and ability to match.

You say "Not the most skilled" but he has a decent offensive repetoire compared to our other centers, comparable to iHart and better than both Simms and Mitch.

If there's a trade for Mitch that makes sense Precious is a great fallback option. I would imagine something like 3/27m

Precious is.

I would tend to agree. Nothing against Obi though!

Reminds me a little of a young Taj.

Maybe the right move is to deal Mitch and roll with I Hart, Precious and Sims. Actually Precious playing next to iHart was shockingly effective.

I don't know if Precious was this effective defensively in Toronto or is the way he works within our system.

franco12 @ 2/13/2024 7:15 PM
I thought he would do well, but never would have thought Thibs would be playing him 40+ minutes a game, not withstanding the injuries.
ekstarks94 @ 2/13/2024 8:31 PM
The question is whether he becomes situational after we are back to full strength.
ramtour420 @ 2/13/2024 8:31 PM
He has surprised. He gives elite rebounding, putbacks and is very underrated as far as his d. Also he is farther along offensively than Mitch. Could and should replace one of our centers if we cannot keep both
Rookie @ 2/13/2024 8:44 PM
If this is an audition he’s definitely passing the audition. Who is his agent? It’s going to take ‘role, minutes and money’ to keep another team from the over pay. I’d like to see him back. I’m not sure what his salary slot is but I would go in the 8-12 range
Knixkik @ 2/13/2024 10:46 PM
He’s very helpful. Only issue is he’s essentially both a 3rd string center and 3rd string PF at full strength. Knicks had no backup PF and now have both bogdanovic and Achiuwa which is great. I’m hoping we can keep him because we can’t let good players walk for nothing.
gradyandrew @ 2/13/2024 11:31 PM
Let's see how a Mitchell Randle OG front line works before thinking about trading Robinson. Remember he was offensive rebounding at one of, if not the, highest rates in?NBA history before going down as well as looking like a future DPOY candidate. Thibs has pretty much stuck to injuries not being a reason for players to lose their rotation spot.

Re: Precious, he grew up in NY right? Hopefully he and Burks can be resigned on a Leon special, ie two guaranteed years and a third at the team option. iHart might be harder to hold onto. I haven't done a deep dive yet into free agency and positional needs.
I will say that moving Wemby over to the 5 takes at least one team with space out of the running. After you account for cap space teams then you just need to beat the mle in terms of an offer for guys like iHart and Precious.

Jeff Van Gundy would be the polar opposite of Obi.

I don't think teams will massively overpay. The teams are going to start managing their capa tightly and will invest in their starters first and are mandated to how much they spend for their FRPs. I think Precious gets above the vet min but below the MLE. He is around the Bi annual exception price range. Team has so far 3 picks in next draft they may draft a PF/C. Or they may keep him and include Sims in a trade and keep Precious. I wouldn't lose sleep over what they do with him. Heck, he may be playing for a contract and then we give him guaranteed money and then he gets lethargic. BTW, love to see kid from the Bronx doing well

Knixkik @ 2/14/2024 7:30 AM
C Hartenstein/ Mitch/ Achiuwa
PF Randle/ Bogdanovic/ Achiuwa
SF Anunoby/ Hart
SG DiVincenzo/ Burks
PG Brunson/ McBride

This is such an incredibly deep roster/ rotation when healthy. It’s 9 guys plus McBride and Achiuwa as 10 and 11. I wonder if Achiuwa would accept something in the line of what McBride took but a little more. It would be interesting to see if the Knicks would pay anymore than that to a player who isn’t in a fully healthy rotation. This assumes Hartenstein and Robinson are back. I can see 3 years 15 mil. So 5 mil a year. Does another team pay him more than that with an offer sheet out of fear of the Knicks matching? There would have to be a team with a clear and obvious rotation spot and cap space. Maybe OKC who is light up front. It’s not a forgone conclusion he’s back. I think Hartenstein and Burks getting resigned are more likely because they are clear rotation players. Knicks will also have 2 first round picks. If they don’t trade 1 of them you can picture them drafting a big man for depth. Someone who can contribute but without the expectation of consistent playing time. It will be interesting to see.

Nalod @ 2/14/2024 8:40 AM

I see him as a back up 4 as he was intended to be.
At 6-8 his size is not ideal for center. Sims might be just 6-9 but he is a beast.

Knixkik lays it out thats how things are for this year but longer term I doubt that sticks.
Josh Hart could be traded. Sounds sacrilege. Bojan I suspect we pick up his contract he eventually gets traded.
Burks could stick a few years.
One of ihart or mitch goes.

I cannot see what changes will be but I know our FO and coaches will figure new shit out.
Precious has thrived under Thibs and the opportunity given. Players don’t want to play for Thibs are perhaps those on last big deals and if they don’t make the boss happy they sit. Thibs is getting players paid!!!
