Knicks · Johnnie Bryant to Cleveland (page 1)

Damn. Added Cheeks but losing Johnnie hurts. At least we're not as young, needing of development at this stage of the roster building.

BigDaddyG @ 7/6/2024 5:37 PM
What does Cleveland have that we don't? Is it money? Has to be it.
EwingsGlass @ 7/6/2024 5:43 PM
Man. This is the biggest offseason loss.

To be honest, not really sure what adding Mo Cheeks did for this team. Losing Johnnie Bryant has me more depressed than pretty much anything that happened this offseason. I don’t want to be all doom and gloom, but, I loved seeing run over and whisper something in Thibs’ ear mid game. Maybe it was rubbish. I dunno, but that kind of excitement made me appreciate him.

Kenny Payne coming back?

Alan Hahn mentioning the relationship with Spida.

Johnnie Bryant leaving the Knicks coaching staff to become associate head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers under new head coach Kenny Atkinson, according to multiple reports.

Bryant came to New York from the Jazz and there was a belief his presence was connected to the expectation that Donovan Mitchell would be arriving via trade. The Knicks then wound up not trading for him and with Mitchell now signed to an extension in Cleveland, this move makes sense for Bryant. He and Mitchell remain very close from their days in Utah.

DLeethal @ 7/6/2024 10:54 PM
Johnnie seemed like he was the Donovan hook and the Thibs heir. Thibs about to get an extension and Donovan just signed one himself. Probably a cleaner path to head coach in Cleveland if Kenny flops. If Thibs unexpectedly fails you know Jay Wright will be getting the bag.

Serious question here…what exactly is the fascination with J. Bryant?

His development of players and teams he has been on. Well documented efforts with lots of players in Utah, the have called him out specifically

DLeethal @ 7/6/2024 11:14 PM
I don’t think he’s as needed anymore with our veteran lineup versus when we were focused on developing all the young guys. I could really care less about losing him. Thibs is the alpha dog we all know this.
PassTheBall @ 7/6/2024 11:21 PM
He was the guy working closely with IQ and RJ. I guess the writing was on the wall with that trade. Now that DM has resigned it makes even more sense. That’s said, choosing Cleveland over NYC is crazy lol

Yeah it seems like since all of these guards developed in NY (Brunson, quickley, Donte, deuce etc) he must have had a big hand in it. Would have been nice to have him continue with a guy like kolek. And he was supposed to be the next head coach and you could see that in the not so distance future given thibs age and likelihood of eventually moving to the front office at some point.

At least they're not Detroit.

I suppose his contract was up July 1st or about?
Makes no sense if Thibs is extending. Bryant im sure is making the same or more. I doubt money was an issues.
Not like Cheeks pushed him aside. I guess Bryant felt like it was time to move on? Learn from Atkinson.

And Erman and others learned from Bryant too! Not like he the only one that can coach guards.
Cheeks likely did a good job with Coby White in Chicago? Cheeks is HOF player. WE'l be fine.
Bryant did a great job here. The goal was to get Donovan here. Brunson fucked that up.

Bryant asked out of his Ny contract, not sure what was left

Supposedly Bryant was also the Randle Whisperer.
ToddTT @ 7/7/2024 10:04 AM
Problem solved.

I guess his Donovan Mitchell man crush was just too much. Oh well, sad to see him go but if he didn't want to be here then don't let the door hit ya' on the way out

I’d guess it’s the opposite. Donovan asked/demanded his guy as a part of resigning.

I would guess some accommodation was made there as an incentive for both.
