Knicks · Randle's Extension (page 1)

I say no way he takes a team friendly deal like Brunson and OG did. Only question here is if a max extension is even on the table - 4 years 181.5M

I suck at posting content but if someone is able to — Tommy Beer has the best article I’ve ever seen written o Randle situation and ALL the reasons he is such a complex player / situation for the Knicks.

Outstanding article IMO.

What other teams out there do you think would Max Randle. Not being argumentative, just don't know. Pascal signed for four years, $189M and I think we can all agree that they're on the same tier. I'm just wondering what win now team has the right cap environment for Randle's team to leverage against the Knicks.

Not much of a Beer fan outside his random stats tweets, so would appreciate if you could paraphrase his article.

He touts how Julius regular season performances are important and impactful (we don’t get the seeds we do without Julius) but asks why is a 3X all-star not received like other stars before him.

He shows the brutal (historically brutal) playoff performances and specifically touches on Julius dogging it games 3 & 4 vs Heat in 2023.

He states all indications Knick front office support/want Julius but at their price (good deal).

He brings up fit where others JB, OG, Josh, Donte have stepped up but Julius has not in playoffs and asks as potentially our 4th “most important player” behind JB, OG & Mikal does he fit and at such a high price he may demand.

I give Randle a blank check.

He’s a top 3 Knick in the past 30 years.

He turned this shit/ship around.

I might not make the best president/GM.

I’ve neither seen the FO show any interest in trading Randle nor any other team interested in trading for him. As far as I know right now, there are zero teams next season with max salary cap space so if he opts out and becomes a FA his choices are limited. In every scenario I can see the Knicks FO has all of the leverage.

I give Thibs and JB far more credit and I also may not make a the best president/gm

And I expect more assists in the next two years.

Those are simply high usage #s - not knocking them but there is little context behind them.

Knick greats over the years (Clyde, Bernard, Spree, Brunson) are considered great because they elevated their games in the playoffs. Julius other the other hand has shat the bed.

Over the past 40 years 573 players have started at least 15 playoff games. Of those 573 players Julius Randle is the ONLY player to shoot <35% from the floor and <30% from 3.

Since 1970 (54 years) all players that have attempted at least 16 FG per game in playoffs have shot +40% - except only Julius Randle who has shot (34%)

Julius is only 2nd player in entire NBA history to attempt more than 14 shots per game in playoffs and shoot <38% FG, <26% 3FG and <71% FT.

In the 2023 playoffs over 10 games he avg 3.6 assists but 3.5 TO’s. Over 15 playoff games for his career he has more TOs than assists.

His overall counting stats decline at historical levels in the playoffs vs regular season. In 2023 Julius became the first player in NBA history to avg >25 PPG in regular season and <17 PPG in playoffs.

He’s an interesting player - for sure.

Believe that question was more towards whether he pushes for the max. But on the unrelated note, yes I agree, I'll take Julius 10/10 times over PG.

Do not think anyone will disagree with you in terms of his poor past playoff production.
What some will argue is how you skim over the fact he has been a consistent high tier producer.
Which as post above shows, is pretty high level regardless of his usage.
Just seems like you favor his poor usage stats (despite the low level roster the first couple of years with Knicks) and how he played on one foot in his last playoff year and last year with one foot over them. Btw, Do agree that he played bad vs Hawks, pressed and made bad decisions. (We will leave out how Atlanta doubled and tripled him due to having that low level roster mentioned above)

But given his production, multiple All Star appearances, being a key piece in turning franchise around and giving Knicks a team friendly deal the first time around (yep, JB was not the first) , what would you say is a fair contract? Or are you one of those fans that just wants him gone at any expense? If he is to be traded, Who would you replace him with?

Calling it. Randle signs for max money today. 99% of NY embraces him fully... next June.

5% chance he gives the Knicks a discount... and converts 25% of his haters.

It’s tough call.
People already expect him to take a second discount.
Same people that would expect Knicks to pay JB the max, on his next deal, if he continued to produce and because he took less his first go around.

Believe Randle should be at $45 a year. (Second discount)!Given OGs deal.
Believe Randle wants to stay and would take it.
Question is if Knicks can afford it and feel he is worth it.
Media seems to point to some in FO having same mindset as some on here regarding his worth.
Seems like Knicks have made a commitment to JB and a fast paced game with high energy wings around him. Can’t say thats bad thinking despite how I feel Randle is underrated by the fan base. And the fact we all saw that we needed another high level creator in the Indiana series. And no, I don’t think Bridges or OG is that. We saw how Knicks were able to shut down Nets/Bridges by giving him a little extra attention.

At the end of the day I trust this FO. (Don’t trust Mitch’s or OG’s durability though). Feel regardless of what they do with Randle, the future is bright! Appreciate Randle for being a part of creating that.

Knicks win a chip, the city renames the Lexington Ave hub gRandle Central Station

We’re not extending Randle. Maybe if he accepts a 1-2 year extension but otherwise no. He will be 31 at the end of the current contract
VDesai @ 8/3/2024 11:54 AM
Knicks I think have to extend Randle bc letting him go doesn't give them the cap space to replace him with a player of that caliber. Its better to extend him and think about trading him if he doesnt git rather then letting him play it out and risk having him walk.

I think its in his best interest to take the extension now - coming off the shoulder injury and with Bridges on the team can he replicate his stats? Maybe as

Don’t feel there is a rush for either side.
If Randle plays well next year it’s good for both sides.
Randle will get more money, Knicks will have a successful season.
If Randle plays badly or gets hurt, the Knicks can live with Randle opting in to what is a reasonable final year or trade him as a valued expiring.

Best path is to play the first half and see how it goes. Feel Randle will have motivation to play well in show me year as a 29 year old looking for a large contract.
As we saw with IHart, sometimes other moves make it hard to keep solid players.
Ironically, many of those players were signed because Randle took less money in his last contract.
