Knicks · Randle's Extension (page 2)
VDesai wrote:Knicks I think have to extend Randle bc letting him go doesn't give them the cap space to replace him with a player of that caliber. Its better to extend him and think about trading him if he doesnt git rather then letting him play it out and risk having him walk.I think its in his best interest to take the extension now - coming off the shoulder injury and with Bridges on the team can he replicate his stats? Maybe as
Don’t feel there is a rush for either side.
If Randle plays well next year it’s good for both sides.
Randle will get more money, Knicks will have a successful season.
If Randle plays badly or gets hurt, the Knicks can live with Randle opting in to what is a reasonable final year or trade him as a valued expiring.
Best path is to play the first half and see how it goes. Feel Randle will have motivation to play well in show me year as a 29 year old looking for a large contract.
As we saw with IHart, sometimes other moves make it hard to keep solid players.
Ironically, many of those players were signed because Randle took less money in his last contract.
His current contract is a team friendly deal.
With him being 29yrs old, it'll be his last big contract. I say he signs on a slight discount similar to OG but nothing like Brunson

Outside of better spacing from the C position. Randle has everything in place to thrive. Has a PG that allows him to be more of a finisher. Has a complimentary forward who can take on the tougher defensive assignment. Has 5 37-40% 3pt shooters to kick the ball out to.
Drafted by the Lakers, after 4 years LA renounced their rights to Randle making him a free agent. Randle left that summer and LA received nothing in return when Randle left
Randle signs a 2yr 18M (per) contract with NO. Randle declines his 2nd year player option after the and hits free agency. NO received nothing in return when Randle left
After the 24/25 season Randle has a player option. If he opts out he will become a free agent. There are currently 3 teams with atleast 30M in projected cap space for the 25/26 season. San Antonio, Washington and Houston.
Randle can sign an extension with the Knicks
He can wait and opt out and become a FA in 25/26
He can wait and opt in for the 25/26 season
We will all have to wait and see what happens. Option 4 is we trade Randle. Neither side has signaled that they are interested in option 4

Lakers renounced and needed cap space for Lebron. They got something for the cap space.
They traded Davis. Had the lottery in Zion year, Randle plays same postiton and left for a bigger contract.
Randle in NYC, becomes allstar, all NBA under thibs.
You implying he leaves for nothing in two previous scenarios and thus has a history of doing so? Maybe a propensity for it? Like some biological one?

I did leave it hanging and open for interpretation didn’t I and you did the standard Nalod response of answering a question with a passive aggressive question 😁

So Zion is a PF. Randle was a F/C in LA but they mostly wanted him to play C. With Randle and Davis Randle mostly played C. Zion is a PF. With the Knicks you can read the tea leaves and see we are going to need him to play minutes at C. Randle prefers PF and always has. He can secure his freedom again but his options aren’t great unless the Knicks play ball. What do you, Nalod, think he will do

This is not realistic. He is an All NBA player and an All Star. He will get the most he can get, especially since he took less last time. There is also no one who they can trade for, who will be a better fit. He's friends with everyone, he's an All Star PF, and deserves the max, whether people complain about his playoff performances or not.

OG is overpaid considering his lack of availability. I dont believe it will be Randle's numbers which will determine what the FO offers (unless his game falls off a cliff) but Randle's availability.
He's pushing 30, and Im guessing the FO wants to feel confident that Randle isnt going to need more surgery for a while, at least. Will be available and healthy for the playoffs.

Agree. When defending Randle I often mention his durability. Rarely got hurt and puts in 35 MPG.
Hard to find that in players under $30 million who are All Stars. Looking at his stats last year, he was the top rebounder, ( usually is), his 2pt FG % was better than JB(only other player taking +10 a game) and second in assists as a PF.
Will be a tricky renewal. He is getting into that low 30 age horizon. Usually not a good one for most players in the NBA. Knicks have several younger players now that can help JB.
Randles argument will be comps (Sabonis, similar production, signed 4/186), he was probably promised more money for his next renewal during last extension where he gave Knicks discount, he may be asked to carry a bigger work load by also playing more at the 5 this year, Knicks showed in playoffs that they need a down low power presence and elite secondary shot creator.
Regardless, I still think there is no reason for either side to work on extension now.
Knicks should see how his shoulder healed and see how he plays. If he plays just okay or is not 100%, then he will have to opt in for his last year or can be trade mid season. If we keep him one more year it will be at a decent rate on a contract year and get probable bounce back production.
If he plays really great, we give that chip a serious run.
Knicks only risk will be that if he does play well, they would have lost a chance to resign a key piece at a lower cost and will have to find a way to replace him at similar value.
Which I think they feel they have already done by signing Bridges. Considering they traded several assets. Hope it’s the right one. Considering Bridges has not consistently produced like Randle has. Randle also seems positioned to have his best year with fresher legs from surgery rest. Especially if this high tier supporting cast stays healthy, IF he has more efficient 3pt shooting and IF he can cut down on his ball handling/turnovers. Lots of ifs but all reasonable goals.
Brunson is proving to be an elite #1. Randle in spurts has shown he can be an elite #2. This team could be the best team in the league this year. But we need to see how it formulates before we marry ourselves to it.

He turned this shit/ship around.
I might not make the best president/GM.
GM needs to be forward looking...paying JR for what happened previously does not work. Team building must be about the setting up the future. He has demonstrated an ability to contribute in the regular season, but has been a non-factor in the playoffs. If he shows an ability to be a #2 or #3 option and bring energy on D...let's pay him. Otherwise, let's save our capital for a stretch 5...which is really the best fit for the future.

He demonstrated inability on a depleted back court roster that lacked shooting to properly handle the double team vs. Atlanta.
His next playoff failure he played thru pain and needed Ankle surgery. Thats it.
Despite his post season awards he is not a max player. Not sure he is seeking this. We don't know what he wants.
I can see many scenarios where knicks keep him or move him.
He deserves a raise having taken a discount before. As long as its a tradable deal Im good. Maybe our long term destiny is to trade him for a 5 and move OG to the 4.

Once in happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is a trend.
I hope Julius is around to settle this.

That's not cool. IQ gets more than that. Salary cap is going up like crazy. Even Brunson on a crazy discount is still getting almost 40m per year.
Give Randle his 40m per. He's more than deserved it over the years

Randle is eligible for 4 years 181.5M so 40M in the first years sounds about right
Im wondering if Minny is waiting until its ownership arbitration is complete before it would make a massive trade like moving KAT.
I don't see how the money works for us if thats Leons move but Randle on Minny makes sense. They have Reid when they want to go big. Randle is a more flexible greater then KAT. A lot of pieces have to get shifted by both teams to make this happen and I don't see the numbers nor do I see Mitch and Randle moved for KAT. Can't Fathom DDV and Randle both being moved either.
Poses the question: Objectively, if DDV and randle is the price and Thibs says that gets us to the finals, do you do it? Not easy for this fan to promote that. Seems sacrilege but its why Leon gets the big bucks.
The Nick Richards/MIles Bridges for Randle seems easy and logical for both teams. Obviously there are many reasons to like or hate that also.
Perhaps it all comes down mid season when players can get moved and we have evaluated Simms, Huk, and others for that matter. Im sure we have offers for Kessler others but all teams have things to figure out also. Trades have to have mutual benefits.
First 20 games will tell a lot!
They will show Randle exactly how his *Knicks* max contract will fit in year by year. It will be generous but exactly fit into a very specific slot in the Knicks Jalen pecking order of things. They will profusely thank him for taking a chance on Knicks and giving them that glorious 2020 season and remind him how much they supported him when his troubles started, they did not waiver on that at all. Zero. Randle will nod Yes to that.
They will ask Randle to be transparent back to them and ask Randle if he and team would really want a max-max above what they are showing him, please kindly list 2 or 3 teams you would like to land on and we will do our best to get you there AND we will make sure to set those contract expectation terms for you with them because that's how Leon does business. You know that we know that we have done this for our guys and we will for you too. He and Dolan may dap, they both know the emotional struggles. Bro hugs if the tears show up.
And then I'd watch what Dallas and then New Orleans does if this juncture comes to pass.

Everyone at the table - Randle, Randle's agent, Leon, Dolan, Brock - all want the same thing: for Randle to stay at the contract amount that he feels comfortable with and with what Knicks and Brock Aller will lay out in full, transparent detail right to Randle and his agent about the Knicks sustained path to championship level team, players, salary situation. Those details will include how much Jalen helped the Knicks cap situations - and they will frame it in terms of helping everyone get to a championship, not how much $ sacrifice any player is taking even though everyone understands exactly those numbers, they will show them and be transparent - and how much they *hope* (but really already know cause that was mostly likely worked out before the picks were offered) Mikal's extension will help the Knicks re-invest back into their team to get the rings. They will show Randle exactly how his *Knicks* max contract will fit in year by year. Not unreasonable and Suspect thats how it plays out.
At the same time its a business and his time here may have served its purpose and now time to move on. Could be mutual. We need a 5. Did we need Mikal? Not really. Want vs. Need. Mitch's fragility makes us vulnerable.
Randle moving on is not based on a contentious scenario. Not like they are negotiating and Leon asks with some nefarious tone "So, Jules, how old is that son of yours now? Bet you really proud of him? Right? So he what, home playing video games and your wife, cleaning up dinner, while you here with us, right? Don't worry, we have a very responsible colleague there who won't interfere unless we tell him, so, lets get back to the numbers, right? we finish here, you go home, get some sleep, make another kids, what ever, its all good, unless of course reciprocity is not felt, right? It gets cold in Minnesota!"
