I love this guy already, so smooth with the answers.

No idea if this is good or not.

Like they say: Unique New York, unique New York, unique New York.

Was nice seeing Kolek, Huk and Dadiet get minutes last night. All showed skills that make them roster worthy. Huk is actually impressing me the most. Legitimate NBA body and good instincts. Dadiet has a hell of a 2nd quarter. Not sure if that’s the real deal or a good quarter. Kolek is playing some prime time PG.

Assuming we convert Huk’s contract, I have him leaping Jericho soon.

Kolek is still behind Payne, imo, but that won’t be long. Just need to tighten up his defense and limit some of those cross court passes.

Dadiet is a tough call. He shows a smooth stroke. Good instincts. Could use a bit more of an NBA workout to get stronger, but man, he actually would fill a need at SF for us right now. Call it spot minutes for now since we have enough wings to cover SF, but I would get him game time. Maybe a short stint in GLeague.

TJ Warren is in the lead for the vet min. Though I would want to give Jalen McDaniels a look.

I don’t need to trade anyone, but my shortlist of young players still on reasonable or rookie scale contracts. Any of those guys could step into the rotation and provide meaningful minutes. I’d be listening for any of these.

1. Herb Jones
2. Tari Eason
3. Cam Whitmore
4. Walker Kessler
5. Trey Murphy
6. Taylor Hendricks

Sims has been here for 3 or 4 years and I can't remember any play where he flexed afterwards. I want to win, but I also want some entertainment. Sims and Precious combined for 11 offensive rebounds. So it was nice to see the Knicks back to that tried and true formula. That combined with Payne and Kolek going for 17 assists were nice to see and hopefully kills some of the worries about the bench being a weakness.

I don't really see Hukporti and Kolek passing Sims and Payne in the rotation, but with injuries they should see some regular season minutes.

Warren seems like he could really help as backup forward is a spot where the Knicks are shallow. He's split time 60/40 at SF and PF for his career. Right now, it looks like the only other option is Dadiet, though Thibs is also willing to play Precious at the 4. The downside, TJ played more minutes in 2019-20 (2200) ] since he has since (1600 from 20-21 to 23-24). He's looked like a pro in his minutes.

Postingandtoasting reported that Shamet dislocated his shoulder, which goes with the what it looked like. Dude's contract is only for 15k if waived, hopefully that was just his Geico premium if this happened.

its nice our Yoot is looking good and the new Thibs developing them nice but they are far from tested. We played a preseason game vs a team with a new coach who is looking and trying a lot of things.
This was not a coming out party quite yet. Sims might not be our long term solution as back up but HUK has yet to see time vs. real teams and he will be tested. He has much learning to do.
Daddy Diet hit a few shots which is nice, but as we know Thibs wants his players to contribute in other ways or you get the hook. Missing assignments gets you the hook. Such a thing might not yield a turnover or opponent score but Thibs sees it and they out. Fans be like "Why is Thibs fucking with the kids head?"........ Players get frustrated but it gets shown on video after the game and they see it.
Kolek is close but Payne is ahead of him. Its a good scenario for us.
Huk and Daddy Diet Will have more opportunities? Tune in!!!

I can already see Huk passing Sims in the rotation. Dude can play. I used to be high on Sims as an amazing 3rd string, break-glass-in-case-of-emergency Center. As a primary backup, not so much. Nevermind just scoring, his BBIQ is pretty low, and his D is just not that great for a guy with his raw physical talent

Here is how I think Thibs handles the yoots situation, similar but a bit different than in past years because Knicks are now contenders.

Cam Payne is absolutely the backup PG no matter how good Kolek does in practice or GLeague. Cam is a playoff experienced vet and Thibs will give that guy the backup minutes cause he also knows that Brunson will go down for a game here and there and Cam is the dude you want starting in his place. Cam will get several months to establish himself. If he falters enough, that's when Thibs will make the Kolek minutes decision.

It's a long season and every front office knows rookies hit a wall or are really slow to adjust to a new lifestyle, new money, new players in a new league, speed of the leauge. Westchester Gleague games and practices with the main guys are where they get to work the kinks out of their game, life, traveling, etc. They are all on the Deuce plan until they bust out of the Deuce getting reps in practice plan and can hit his 3's in a game like he did in practice.

If Brunson is in a situation where he will miss 5+ games and Kolek is shining in practice and Gleague, he will get his turn exactly then.

Same for the Sims-Huktuah dynamic. Sims will get a chance, especially cause he is a hard worker and you reward hard workers with some backup minutes when they are finally healthy. Thibs will give Sims a short leash cause those backup 5 minutes may be key. He will not handle Sims-Hukporti the same as Payne-Kolec because of the experience and trust levels.

Dadiet is the golden goose wild card 19yo. They will handle him with care as a very talented rookie. He has a lot of really really really good mentors in OG, Mikal, Josh and others. He will show up when he is ready and whenever that may be regardless of roster or backup situation: this year, next, or the year after. Whenever he is ready and not before, they will as delicately throw him into the caldrons of the MSG fires and see how he does.

Read the tweet in your head like it's Sean Connery doing Alex Trebek's SNL version of Jeopardy, more fun that way, especially when the meds finally hit oh yeah not even lunch yet.

Good points. Deuce did so many things well on the court but had to get his shot right. Its the NBA and if teams drop back on defense because you take the shot and its not falling they take away penetration and effective playmaking. Kolek is not fast but he is is crafty. If he can translate that range to the NBA he will get minutes. He is very much in the mold of Brunson. Not lost on our FO as they drafted him!!! LOL
Not sure I see Kolek in Gleague for any great stretches because I don't think it would benefit him. Remember when Thibs started sims and kept iHart off the bench? It as because he was so effective with that second unit. I can see Kolek starting (Maybe) if Brunson goes downing in part because he is surrounded by dudes that can all hit their shots and will do the right things. Cam might be a better QB for the second unit. It goes south on Kolek, he gets a quick hook. Thibs don't rooks fail. Succeed or sit.

Kolek given his age and experience is further along than many younger rooks. Dadiet is an very interesting young player. Logic says he is not ready. If he can find space on the floor and execute when called upon that would be awesome! We need our bench to step up if we to truly contend. Boston succeeded when guys like Novak filled in at times but Hauser and Pritchard getting shots to fall was critical to its depth. Different type of players but the point is low cost or home grown on easy contracts is key in this CBA era of parity. We got the "stars", its the depth that will define us.

Alpha1971 @ 10/18/2024 11:28 AM
You know when I see Dadiet, I can't help think of Knox. Dont throw rocks at me. Knox has all the promise but he didn't have the drive or smarts. Dadiet hopefully utilizes his talents like Kevin never did and the team brings him along properly and patiently.

Don't think just in terms of a singular player. Think in terms of what the coaching staff needs to do with all the rookies and players they think are long term for their team: They would LOVE to give Kolek, Dadiet, Hukporti a million reps together so that they bond and catch each other's nuances and feel for the game and the cutting and PnR with all 3 are like second nature, all for that second unit. That is where all of the dwarf and elf swords are forged, in the deep fires of Westchester GLeague deep in the depths of development territories, and then watch them all march on a quest to Mordor while they slay any foe in their paths towards the NBA finals, all on the second unit though first and gleague before that!

Ok. Hard truth is that Hart in the corner allowed Wash to collapse the floor. Dadiet needs time but he would spread the floor better.

Rough way to end pre-season last night. But essentially at our worst, they were able to keep it close with solid defense, for the most part.

1) I appreciate the rookie class. They are going to take a little while to understand NBA defense. They are cold rooks struggle to stay in front of their men. There isn’t really an anchor in the paint to nail them out.

2) Payne, Deuce and Achiuwa look like a solid handful as the second unit. Sims is better than Huk for now, and looks big, but still worry about him as a primary option.

3) That starting 5 needs to find its identity. Don’t really love the comments from Hart about not knowing his role. Pass, Rebound, Defend, cut to basket, hit open three. Mikal is stressing the shots but he will be ok. There is so much talent in that starting 5 that it might be easy for guys to get a little lost in the shuffle, but I think they will work it out in a few games. Celts / Pacers isn’t the easiest start to the season, but I’m looking for this team to be ready by playoffs, not game 1 or 2.
