We replaced Randle with OG and Randle occupied space. He’s a big man.

Same with iHart and Kat. Kat is soft. IHart occupies space, he’s a big man.

Everyone has to box out and rebound.

They’re looking to sign a 3pt shooter as a back up - but they need a Kurt Thomas/Junk Yard Dog type player who goes out and just gets every lose ball, and I guess Josh Hart is partly that player.

I suppose I meant it in theory. In theory, we are supposed to be an elite defensive team, especially on the wing. I was led to be that the signature of this team was going to be clamping people down

Mathematically, a Celtics team shooting 47% on 62 3 pt attempts is going to beat any team that has less than 1.4 pts per possession. You would have to shoot 70% from 2 to match that production for those 62 possessions. Its modern NBA. Our much lower 3 pt attempts in the first game actually makes me wonder whether our coaches are reverting to a more old-school offensive model. Or just an acknowledgement that without Divo our 3 point shooting is off currently.

Not trying to growl gloom and doom, but the efficient shot selection we started with last season is gone. Those long 18 foot jump shots are back. Its lazy offensive basketball and will result in giving up Points Per Possession to more modern teams. That shot selection was one concept I thought we might lose when Johnnie Bryant left, I would expect him to be at the forefront of modern basketball theory, though it might just be a game where the Knicks just got rattled.

Anyway, I hope they turn it around, but I also hope the Knicks embrace the 3pt philosophy. To beat the Celts they have to figure out how to score more points per possession.

that theory is no longer supported after one game of actually watching our wing defenders struggle to close out and stay with their man.

Everyone was healthy. They had time together. And got a foul egg laid on national TV.

Trading 3's for 2's against the Celts is a recipe for a loss. Shooting 61 3's is beyond modern basketball, that is futuristic and the Celts may be leading us to the next dimension of basketball similar to D'antoni's Suns, and Warriors after that.

As far as us not shooting enough 3s, we shot 30 of them last night. Last years opener against the Celts, we shot 41 3s. Our season average was 36 3s per game last year. I think we will shoot more as we get more comfortable and insert a few more sets as the season rolls along. Deuce was a cultprit of several long 2's last night (foot on the line).

I agree with you 100%. I do believe the Celts desire to attempt 50+ 3s per game in a 5-out is the forefront of changes to the game. Especially with the league clearly calling less fouls, taking away any TS% boost that would come from And-1. I don't love watching 3 point contests, but its a mathematical advantage.

I expected our threes to increase by substituting KAT for Mitch/iHart. They really should keep shooting 3s until they start making them. I might even support swapping PacDaddy for jHart to move that forward. Kid can play. Let him get his lumps in now. He will be fine.

Their shooting was ridiculous. Our perimeter D was not great, but also not as bad as the Celtics' stats make it appear to be.
