Can another coach fix what the core issues are?
Bucks getting here have the second highest payroll in the east and have few assets to get him short term help.
This is not about making him happy, he is under contract, a massive one and part of that is taking the hit if he asks out.
Reality might be trading him now to start a rebuild so you do have assets.
Bucks greatest player ever? Nope, that was Kareem. ROY and delivered a chip early in his career. When they traded him to the lakers they did not get fair value for trading a top 5 GOAT, but they did have a nice run and was competitive for a while. Lakers at the time sucked for a few years until it all came together in 1980.
Bit of history, if you want to see the genious of that rebuild look to GM Bill Sharmen who held the post for the 5 years BEFORE jerry west took over in 1982. Sharmen set the table for that franchise. West deserves credit but he was not the architect of showtime. Riley did a good job but he was handed a great team that had already won a chip but was in disarray with an unpopular coach.
I think the Bucks would want to undo that Kareem trade.
The NBA is not like other team sports. Championships are usually won by the team that has the best player in the league. Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan, Magic, Bird, LeBron, Steph Curry. And Giannis.
Why would you trade a top 5 player in his prime to clear cap and rebuild, just for the hope you might get another franchise talent that could take 5 years to mature?
They’re righting their ship. They’re probably going to come into MSG and win, and they’ll start winning games and if they need a quick fix, off with Doc Rivers as coach and find someone else to inject some life.
Because they have to face very steep realities of paying luxury money out the wazoo just to be a potential play in team?
They also need to guard against losing Brook and Portis at end of year or be in the position to negotiate against themselves extending those 2 guys in offseason. And then deal with Dame next offseason.
They are in similar position as LAC has been with PG, Harden, Kawhi without the deep pockets of Microsoft stock. LAC could have traded PG a long time ago and then they did not.
OKC dismantled their PG version team and did have to wait on SGA to mature. But it did pay off. Worth the wait? Eye of the beholder.
So wait - Lopez is finished- they don’t have to sign him for big money. Portis, Middletown and Pat Connaughton all have player options. Do they opt out?
I mean, I let Middletown walk - dude is always hurt. Portis is wonderful, but maybe there are better ways to spend money.
Next year - look at their cap- if those guys opt out, they just have Dame and Giannis occupying a lot of salary- but they’ll have room. Challenge to fill out a roster, maybe.
I just don’t see the need for them to blow everything up.
You have to look at specifics. Players can come off but when you over the apron you can't just replace it.
Your not wrong about Giannis being at or near prime. Thing is, he is breaking a bit more.
And, you need to look at draft picks and what is left to build on.
Thunder did a really deep rebuild and had excess room short term to steal iHart.
They have a long window but a two year financial window before they have to start paying more Yoot.
Took them 3 years to reconstitute the roster? Presti looked silly there for a while but he really did a good job. its a one team market in OKC so its doable. Same with SAS. Bucks have Brewers and Packers but build a nice fanbase the last few years with a good arena as well. Issue is can the business model work with a rebuild.
Then, what does the long term look like? They are over the apron and there are consequences to that.
One day we may be looking at the same thing. Hopefully we have a chip to show for it.
Me? I hope he goes to Nets. I want the nets to compete as inter city rivalry would be so much more fun than one with Miami.
