Would this be like getting a super max deal starting at like $70m per with raises for 5 years compared to other max contract given out? As comparison, I think Jaylen Brown got the biggest recent super max starting at $50m and working up from there?

Not Otani level in terms of AAV (10 years, $700M). But 15 years at $51M-$55M is still historic in terms of length. Soto has an opt out in 5 years (when he'll be in his early 30s) but the Mets can negate that by offering him another step raise.

I hope they check his actual age when they do the medical because there as little leaguers, these guy lie about their age- so he might really be 28 or 29!

Got you, Otani got a more girthy contract but shorter length by comparison.
Honestly, that money can be better spent … you would have thought the yanks learned their lesson on mega contracts they never pan out . I would have walked away after it went up past 600 mil . For a career 280 hitter and a below average fielder . People are acting and paying like he’s the best player in baseball. I’m not denying his talents he’s a great player. But 765 mil for .280 dang . How baseball has changed .
Good for the Mets though little brother needs to fill the seats. I swear though Mets are like the jets they are cursed watch Soto go out for the year in spring training. Or under perform like Arron Rodgers .

He will be a DH last 6-7 years of the contract similar to Stanton now with the Yankees. Baseball players can play to well in their 40’s it’s just that during the steroid era so many guys’ bodies would break down by their mid-30’s. Satchell Paige won ROY when he was 47.

I think WFAN had a journalist/analyst that covers baseball say based on his WAR, he should be getting something like $65m per year - which I know is insane! But then the numbers for average ball players is pretty mind boggling too.
I like this move for the Mets. Risky as hell for the long term but they got better today. Hope their luck changes. Everything they do usually turns to crap. The subway series just heated up!

In NBA terms it would be higher than anything ever given out for a contract. Think of giving $80M to Luka for 5 years per season. You'll get superior offense and sub-par defense.

Its semantics but Ohtani's contract is heavily deferred so his AAV impact against the tax (which is all that essentially matters in terms of MLB relative lack of a cap) is ~$46M per season.

Probably not. Either way, if he wanted to be a Yankee, he would be. He chose Flushing and we will see how it swirls for him.
