Knicks · Soto to the Mets (page 2)
fitzfarm wrote:I gotta say as a yankee fan I’m kinda relived that’s a lot of money for a 280 hitter. That’s one player! Good for the Mets they needed a #3 hitter in the worst way and they need to fill the stands .The yanks can now go get any or all of these guys for less then Soto: barns, Fried, Flaherty ,Walker, Bregman
I’m this boat. Keep in mind that he hit in front of Judge this year. Teams had to pitch to him.
Next year he won’t have that protection
Great player but at that price huge sigh of relief. Then there’s the team chemistry issue. Seems like his ego got inflated along with his contract

They had to sign Fried the rotation wasn’t good enough

Was listening to Francesa earlier today. He hates the Fried signing. I disagree. He wants the Yankees to not sign a first baseman like Walker or Alonso. Disagree again. Guerrero next offseason will want the same $$ Soto got

Only thing I will say is, you voluntarily chose to listen to Francesca, yuck ! You did that not under duress ?

Yeah I stopped listening to Francesca years ago … he has no clue what he’s talking about .
I wouldn’t be surprised if we make a run at barns if we loose out on the kid from Japan. trade for Tucker, sign bregman, trade for Cody B who will play first for us . All for less then Soto again sign me up!! If we do that this will be a team for the history books . Supposedly Hal hasn’t given cashman a budget and he’s ready to play ball! if Cody B with the cubs doesn’t work out we will sign walker . I’m fine with either but would rather have Cody . We also need a CF and I know Cody can play that too. Maybe we sign walker anyway.
I will say this on Soto we are talking 5 mil, let’s be honest Soto’s Ego couldn’t stand in Judge’s shadow . Now he’s top dog on the Mets he would never be top dog with Aaron judge on the yanks, and that’s what soto wants top dog status. He didn’t like that he wasn’t the best player on the team… Mets better pry they get yankee Soto and not San Diego Soto … he under performed for SD big time, which led to the trade to the yanks.

If Cashman tried to match $765 mil Cohen was ready to go all the way to a billion

Fact of the matter is that with other incentives, the contract can end up being 800+ mil, without the other perks the Mets included that do matter as they add even more millions to the tab.
It honestly feels like the decision was made mostly because of the money but also a little bit about ego, although that obviously is debatable as reports regarding that are so fishy.
From my point of view, I would’ve liked Soto to remain a Yankee, but all the circus that was created about him getting the highest contract because of his generational talent turned me off after having seen him actually play for the team and obviously have an impact but not really be the huge difference maker everyone was hyping him up to be.
With this I’m not trying to bury him. Soto is an amazing talent with a great swing. His at-bat to clinch the Cleveland series was epic. He created a great duo with Judge and certainly revitalized our offense. But if basketball is a team sport, baseball is that times 4, as an offensive player has 4 or 5 at-bats to impact a game, the most successful fail around 7 times out of 10 and defense, where you can actually have a bigger impact, was really a weakness in Soto’s game.
I’m not gonna say I didn’t want him back, but I won’t say that I’m as heartbroken as media is projecting Yankees fans to be. We are improving our pitching, which was a must after the World Series debacle, and whatever we do next, I hope we improve our defense, which was embarrassing in the WS and in many points of the season. I’m not happy with Boone being back, but it is what it is. He can’t be the sole reason a bunch of veteran stars and players looked distracted and undisciplined out there.
Either way, in my case, even though the World Series left a huge distaste and has me a little down on the team, I’m liking the steps they are taking and hope that they use all the money that was going to Soto to actually build an improved team.

Soto was excellent last season but the Yankees can sign a guy like Alonso this year or Guerrero next year and get similar production. They need to resign Gleyber now that they traded Durbin and Nestor for Williams. Still like the Williams trade they needed a closer. Fried, Cole and Rodon top of rotation next season looks good definitely better than previous years when Nestor was opening day starter or #2 starter
