The NBA hand-checking rule prohibits defensive players from making contact with offensive players using their hands or forearms, except below the extended free-throw line. Hand-checking is considered a personal foul and is called when a defensive player's contact impedes the offensive player's movement, speed, rhythm, or balance
Just trying to understand how the nba doesn’t actually change rules, they just decide to stop enforcing them. Hand checking is just one of those rules still on the books but now open to interpretation. Others include traveling, carrying the ball and gather which I guess is not called a euro step.
This gives the refs the ability to give certain players and/or teams an advantage. I’m only complaining here obviously because the Knicks always tend to be on the short end of the stick.
Enforcing traveling and carrying the ball really slows the game down making it practically unwatchable - but - certain players should get atleast one of two violations a game but never do. You could literally call traveling or palming on every hesitation dribble.
The hand checking is another story especially when you are impeding a player every time they touch the ball
Thoughts?
Hand checking only allowed if you are defending Brunson or KAT
Brunson is a ‘floppy’ player. And for whatever reason, that is being held against him, which is totally unfair and I worry about the little guy getting hurt.
I remember Cuban constantly lobbying with video tape to the NBA office. I hope the Knicks do something similar because.
https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/who-lea...Jalen in FTA is 11th, was 12th last year. I can't find stats for drawing offensive fouls. I'd understand he is among league leaders.
Kat is 15th. Did not see where he was. His avg from last year from 4.7 per to 5.9 per. Big jump but I'd guess he touching and shooting the ball more this year.
We do know Refs are calling less fouls this season.
Hand checking rules went into effect in 1979. It was enforced greater in 1995. It was banned in 2005.
NBA refs since the beginning of time interpret differently. Is it fair? Of course not.
So some players create more contact than others? Sure. Brunson herkey jerky style does create more. I think He is getting hit more this year but so are many others.
Embiid is like the king but his games played might not tell the full story.
Nesmith hand checked Brunson the whole Pacers series. We would have went up 3-0.
Imagine showing up at work and as you try to walk from the elevator to your office someone started pulling on your arm, slapping you in the head and pushing you off balance.

We watch mostly knick basketball so we think Brunson is the only "victim" of this gross injustice?
There are 450 players in the nba. He get to the line more times than 10 other players.
His style of ball incites contact. he gets to the line. he scores points.
He is paid to get groped, mauled and slapped. Its part of the job. Me? Not part of my job.
Every NBA player thinks they are getting fouled.

What’s the math on how many time Brunson brings the ball up court off the inbound and how many times the other team who is guarding him 90’ get called for a foul? I’ll wait right here.
…..maybe the math is that if the refs called a foul every time Brunson is fouled the game would be unwatchable. How many PG’s are guarded 90’? Geez most star players are getting the benefit of foul calls even when they aren’t getting fouled. Brunson is getting man handled the length of the court

you ask the question, provide the answer. I get were you coming from but since this your thread then do it. I looked up if he gets to the line. he does. I assume if he is 11th in the league he also draws non shooting fouls took.
I don't watch many other games of other Allstar guards and if they getting raped and mauled also.
every layup that KAT goes for he seemingly is looking for the call. Same for Jalen. Although I do admit they seem to be less whiney about it as the season goes on.

Like I said. The Refs only selectively enforce the ban on hand checking and that’s part of why ratings are nosediving. The nba is turning into WWF

Thats why scoring is up this year?
Hand checking was banned because people want to see scoring.
I was under the impression ratings are down because of what Silver says, the election and competition from a highly watched world series/playoff run.
I guess Adam silver knows less than PhilC.
If there is an issue, its too many threes? I have read that.
Refs are calling less. That is something tangible. If so, more hand checking perhaps. Me? I Like they aren't calling everything.
If you watch mostly knick ball, then KAT and Brunson are getting mauled. Understandable.
Last night I don't think anyone went to the line for the first 7 minutes.
Look at the scores from last night. Scores are up. Games are not that close. Grizz beat the Warriors by 51 pts!, Lakers beat Kings by 13, Pacers beat suns by 9, Rockets over Pels by 20, Bulls beat Celts by 9, Knicks destroyed Wolves.....and the scores are high also.
So hand checking would lower scores, right?

People want to see scoring so bad ratings are down 28%
If they really wanna tinker with the gameplay and make it a little more interesting, I think one change could be making the court a little bigger. Especially the baseline. It will eliminate the easy corner 3s that teams hunt for and it will also eliminate the turnovers with guys stepping out of bounce. Make the baseline 3 the same distance as the wing and top of the key 3.
Stop with the coaches challenge or checking to see if a hard play was a flagrant. Coaches challenges should only be 1 per game and can it only be used in the 4th quarter. All plays under 2 minutes that are iffy should be replayed and checked by the zebras and that command center.
Also, have teams play each other back to back like a mini series kind of like in baseball. It will help with fatigue with less travel and teams do play harder against their rivals.
Start fining teams and taking away their draft picks if they are proven to purposely sit out players. "Load management" is not an excuse and not an injury.
Lastly, make the NBA Cup more rewarding and (I can't believe I'm suggesting this!) but cancel the NBA Draft lottery. All teams that do not make the playoffs get an equal chance (about 14%) at the first 5-7 picks.

You said it was hand checking.
what was the net effect of hand checking? It intensified defense. What does intense defense do? Reduce scoring.
The games were slugfests and ratings suffered. Im not saying there are many fans that are turned off by good defense, but the NBA is in the entertainment business and when they basically went away from it, scoring went up.
They are doing some "Mini series" doing back to back. knicks play at washington twice later this month. Obviously in division type games where they play 4x. Not sure how many but aggregate helps.
They are also doing more geographically friendly road trips for teams. Example is NY-bkn. Chicago-Milwaukee, GSW-Sac.....etc. this to reduce travel times making it easier. Not perfect, but they are addressing it.

They are fining teams, I think up to $100,000. The rule of 65% of games played as a threshold is to lower salaries and awards to players who don't meet it.
I agree with incentives to get players on the court. It cheats the fans. Especially road games.
As for dimensions of the court? Its an interesting concept.
I really wish hand checking was allowed. I hate how the game is physical everywhere except the perimeter and teams aspire to chuck 75 3s a game

It’s killing tv ratings. You only see dunks in games on wide open fast breaks. The big tv stars in the 2000’s after the Jordan era were Shaq and Vince Carter. Shaq was a half court dunk fest. Vince Carter became a worldwide household name thanks to our draft pick Frederic Weis.

Now I know why your short answers are preferred. Your long ones contradict itself.
