Knicks · Roster Completion - Finishing Touches (page 2)

On that pod, Jeremy Cohen goes through 100+ names in the salary matching slots for combos of Mitch, Precious, Sims, Payne and the best he comes up with is Burks. With the 2nd apron looming and Precious' contract expiring, there just aren't a lot of candidates to acquire that wouldn't bring them over the apron. Given the penalties of being over the apron more than once, the Knicks have to basically decide if they think a move can bring them over the top this year and its worth entering the 2nd apron now or if they should defer it to another cycle.

Knicks don't even need to make that decision, or at least it's already been made. They are hard capped at second apron already. So it's a summer decision.

What I mean is they can make a move right now that will work under the apron, but than in the offseason will almost certainly put them over the 2nd apron. For example if they trade Mitch and Achiuwa for someone who's contract runs longer than Achiuwa's, they will be in a position in the offseason where basically any new veteran they sign will bring them over the 2nd apron. I think they want to avoid that situation for now. It doesn't really seem like there's a trade that puts them over the top.
The suggestion made was Sims + 2's for Burks - mainly because Burks offer the pull up shooting and secondary creation the Knicks lack, but value off the bench and he's credible enough defender. We know he fits, and we know what he's capable of. The other great thing is he's on a min deal and he doesn't need to be re-signed so effectively doesn't hurt our cap situation at all, but can help between now and the end of the year.
Instead let's do whatever it takes to move the ball more to get better shots for the bench guys( ehem Kolek ahem)
ramtour420 wrote:Big no to Burks. That experience was something... Back when this team was all ISO Brunson and Randle. So more ISO wasn't bad. We now have the makings of a legit Championship offense. You know, the one with assists, cuts, kick outs and set shots. To revert back to ISO... Pls don't. Might as well bring back Alonzo Trier.........
Haven't followed him much in Miami, but he's shooting in the 30s from two-point land. Not sure if he's cooked or Spo told him to not even look at the mid-range. Still, what does it say about his ability to hit layups if that's the case?

Yes I listened to a lot of it. I went thru a similar thing. The best combos I found without getting overly complicated is Mitch plus an asset to Charlotte for Richards and Martin. Or for something really small, Sims to Portland for Camara or Sims to Washington for Champagnie (who is on a 2-way.) it just comes down to what assets would need to be included for any of those. Mitch for Valanciunas and Champagnie is another. Knicks still own that Washington pick. Just thinking that there are some possibilities out there.

Why do other teams play kids that are 18 or 19 or 20, but somehow, we can't give Dadiet more of a role, despite looking like a decent athlete.
I'd like to see Josh or Mikal start the game on the bench - I think that would help balance things out.
We don't need to start our best 5 guys - we could save one for the bench.
And at some point, Thibs will get these guys hurt - to anyone who says there isn't a correlation, there is:
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar...
Conclusions
SEIs occurred in 15.6% of players in this study, with an overall rate of 1.74 SEIs per 1,000 GEs. The most significant risk factor associated with injury was minutes per game. SEI was more likely to occur in the third and fourth quartiles of the NBA season than in the first or second quartile.
This is the only answer, and it boggles mind that it hasn’t been done that.
Hart is having an amazing season but bringing him off the bench, will not only give the team the mini boost it needs but, if you start Precious, it would also allow OG and Bridges to play the 3 & 2 position.
Why we at it…would it kill Thibs to play Diadet, Huk are even Kolek a few minutes with the starting lineup when the Knicks have a big league? How do you develop talent when they only get a total of 5 min a month of real game experience?

And here is the other thing - you can finish the game with your five best guys, or the five that are playing the best.
I'm now sadly in the fire Thibs. He is like a jockey that wins short races, but doesn't know how to run a longer race because he whips the horse too hard and the horse is spent by the end.
He is not going anywhere. He just got extended.
And I've also accepted that while this is the best Knick squad we have had in forever, we're just not that good- we're not winning any champions ships and we'll probably max out as a round 2 team.
If we play our guys too many minutes, and we fall short, we are not good enough.
WE are not good enough to contend. Live with it. Last year Randle got hurt, iHart surged and it was great.
This year our starters are as good as any. But our bench is not.
Might want to ask yourselves what does Thibs know about his yoot that we don't.
Calling for his head as if some magic man coach will develop them faster is a nice thought.

I think our bench is fine. Thibs won’t play them because any number of reasons. I’m not looking for him to develop guys, I’m looking for Thibs to lessen the minute load on guys that we need for a play off run. If we can’t win with Kolek getting 5-10 minutes, then we’re not that good.
We saw Hukporti play and he looked decent- better than Sims, yet- zero time when Kat was out.
And here is the thing- we lost going with the starters for big minutes- they’re tired- next up, they will be sidelined with injuries.
If we keep not playing the bench, keep looking spent in the 4th, keep maximizing the regular season to stumble into the playoffs all banged up- then I'll will turn on him. It happened his whole career so far, it happened last season. I want him to learn and I want him to grow as a coach.

I don’t think you can say it happened last year - guys just got banged up - Julius and OG were freak injuries and Mitchell Robinson is just a little brittle.
If I were the owner/GM, I can’t wait until the end of the season - I view this squad as having a short window to max their performance - they’re all in their 28,29 peak years of performance.
After this year, maybe another year- and then, how do you start to rejuvenate the roster as we end up capped out and no draft picks.

This group has been together for 30+ games and are bound by apron rules and you are set to just pack it in and declare failure already?
Short sighted.

Be frustrated with the minutes thing but as soon as you get whacky, that's pure nonsense.

it's not nonsense. What I mean by it is - whether these players develop or not doesn't matter to me- of course, if they do, great.
What I am critically concerned with is the players we have not being driven into the ground and getting injured.
I don't need Kolek to become a better player- because I think he is fine for 5-10 minutes a night to keep Brunson from being over played. If he does, great- that is a seperate issue and I think less important than keeping Brunson fresh and uninjured for the play offs.
I don't see that has nonsense. We're not in develop players mode- we're in win now mode- and regular season wins are only so important.

That's not how any well run organization anywhere runs. Baseball, football, soccer, or the ones we work in. That's how organizations fail or become stale.
Players on other teams are already getting injured or burnt out. The Knicks have been lucky so far? Or perhaps they are doing something different.
Knicks have not played Deuce very much this year and he is the one that is constantly injured this year.
Let us know what you think about the prospects of second round picks and how they develop over 2-5 minutes spans in their rookie year versus what the Knicks have done with their GLeague team and the like over the past years. That's the key differences.
Honest question: Is Denver playing Jokic a lot and driving him into the ground this year? Is that your take? Cause it seems like a lot of the better players in the league fall into that same category.

Yes- Denver might be taking a risk.
Of course, better players are going to play more minutes. And players will always be happy to play and do whatever is asked. That is why I think coaches need to hold them back, sometimes for their own good, and also sometimes to benefit the organization.

There is no doubt that minutes can slow down any type of player. Or parent.
What's the cost of not doing so? You OK if the Knicks potentially have a worse record? Cause that is definitely one of the downside risks.
OK with being without home court advantage and possibly be in the play-in territory? Cause that is definitely one of the downside risks.
Phoenix is doing exactly what you'd like, playing Dunn. They are less healthy and have a worse record. That's an example of the flip side of things in extreme.

Would you rather have home court and be missing OG and Kat or the play in with everyone healthy?
The last time the Knicks made it to the finals - pretty sure you are old enough to remember but not too old to forget- what seed were they?
I don’t mind playing on the road - there is so much pressure on the home team to win- as the underdog, you just have to win one road game and hold your court to advance.
The image I have in my head is the roster is a horse and Thibs is the jockey.
Maybe this is Thibs finding out what his horse can do, and he’ll let up over the next stretch and give guys less minutes and find a balance, but I worry this is Thibs and he, for better or worse, only knows one way- and that is petal to the metal with his top guys.
