Tv ratings down 58% I wonder why
Because your a child?Through the NBA Cup semifinals, which were played Saturday, viewership of NBA games for the league’s national partners — ESPN, ABC, and TNT — was down 19 percent over the same period last year, according to Sports Media Watch.Silver’s acknowledgment was a little softer — he said “ratings are down a bit” — but pointed to a broader trend of “cable television viewership is down double digits.” Viewership is also down for men’s college basketball (21 percent), women’s college basketball (38 percent), and the NHL (28 percent), Sports Media Watch reported.
To grab the context and other things addressed read the short article. I have mentnmioed this before that streaming services account for ratings drop. Do we think PhilC got it right, or the heads of companies that bidder billions for broadcast rights?

Ratings are down 48% since 2012 and 25% this season alone. Now go back to celebrating the greatness of Elfrid Payton in the nba with another 75 paragraph essay.

He sounded like someone who isnt going to change on his own.
He won’t. And some will defend him for that.
You can say that he is a good coach and also that his obstinacy in abusing the playing time of his starting lineup is detrimental. It has been said before. I believe he can change because he did with the offense. But will he? Nope.
Whoever disagrees, fine, but results like this are gonna keep happening and the situation will only get worse the deeper we get into the season. You can’t go through an 80+ season with just your starters and using your bench for an average 11.9 minutes. That is insane. You have to use your bench and find the right combinations that at least keep you in the game. If the bench makes mistakes, how is that different from a starting lineup breaking down like last 4th quarter and this game’s 3rd?
I believe that we can win while using the bench, however limited it is right now. But this “no youth allowed” and “at your first mistake you’re back in the bench” is ridiculous because that’s not the same measuring stick for the starters. The thing here is extending the life of the starters, which right now is going the opposite way.
Nah, but this idea is just stupid. Right? Whatever

That’s the harsh truth of life: you don't want to take a bit of something? Now get tons of it!
Injuries can happen at any time, true, but whoever doesn’t connect this to the overuse of the starting lineup just doesn’t want to see. Good for you. But a better and more balanced use of the bench, of the guys already here, gives you a better chance of this not happening.
Now? Who knows if and for how long KAT is out? And what you didn’t want to do now becomes the norm: Sims, you’re next.
The bench can play. They can also make mistakes, but you have to live with that and give them the chance to improve as well. But this philosophy is not a winner long term. Last year we broke down in the playoffs. That should’ve been enough to try a different way for this season. This is unsustainable.
Ebbs and flows of a season. 9 wins 2 losses now we get back on track with a slew of home games in a row. Thibs needs to trust the bench and let them figure it out and I think we saw him realize that in the second half last night giving Payne and Shamet some extended run.
Knicks are really good on the brink of elite. They need to swap Mitch for a forward though, clearly not enough depth there.
Sometimes reality hits you in the face and IMO Thibs will adjust after running our starters into the ground on this B2B while opposing benches beat us down and our team collapsed in the second half. We need Deuce back also he will always be the innings eater off the bench.
I think in the past the criticism of Thibs minutes has been overblown but this season it’s not. Last I checked we had like 3 guys in top 5 of MP and just became like the only team in the modern era to play all 5 starters 40+ mins and it came in a B2B setting. That’s not normal stuff and Thibs needs to adjust now. We have a good slate of home games with no travel where we should get good practice time in and be able to foster better bench production.
If he doesn’t adjust we are in for some real trouble.
This is the second time coming into a back to back that he has overlayed his starters the night before.
It’s a dead horse, but we beat a lot of mediocre to terrible teams recently and the compounding of minutes is going to destroy these guys going into the playoffs. He’s taken it to a new level this season, there have been multiple wins where the game is out of reach where he could have saved 10-15 minutes on the starting unit.
As of January 4, 2025, the NBA players leading in minutes per game are:
1. Mikal Bridges (New York Knicks): 39.1 minutes per game.
2. De’Aaron Fox (Sacramento Kings): 38.5 minutes per game.
3. OG Anunoby (New York Knicks): 38.2 minutes per game.
4. Josh Hart (New York Knicks): 37.9 minutes per game.
5. Jalen Brunson (New York Knicks): 37.6 minutes per game
That is a disgrace. Thibs is brilliant, but that’s malpractice.
While our bench isn’t elite, there’s enough depth to strategically manage minutes. If Cam Payne can step up and play 35 minutes when Brunson is out, he should be able to handle 15 minutes a night, especially with the offense running through Bridges. Additionally, giving Kolek 8 minutes per game to facilitate offense through Kat alongside Shamet, Hart, and OG would provide more flexibility. This setup should help hide our bench and balance the starters’ minutes.

Thibs saw workout, pledged to play KAT more minutes.
Only positive you can take from this one is that the bench got us back into it in the 4th after that embarrassing 3rd quarter. We got outscored 41-17! Terrible job by Thibs, Brunson and everyone. We were not ready to play. Not sure if the Derrick Rose ceremony had anything to do with it but you cannot do that on the road. That's 2 straight games were we allowed the opposing team to score 40 plus in a quarter. That's all mental imo.
Give the Bulls their flowers cause they completely outplayed us. LaVine and White were incredible and made some shots over good in your face defense.
Fingers crossed KAT is alright. He had a monster game with 44/16/5 and was the catalyst for that run in the 4th scoring at will in the post.
This was the type of game in a back to back in early January where Thibs should have went deeper into his bench and played Dadiet imo. Back to backs on the road are probably the toughest games to win and all the starters played over 40 minutes in OKC the night before so as good a shape as our team is and we know they are tough and want to play, Thibs needs to use these games to put Dadiet in there. Not even for 20 minutes. Give him 5 minutes each half and see what happens. Talking to a wall cause I love Thibs but he is who he is and he believes in what he believes in and won't change. But these are the dog days of the season where energy isn't consistent and this is where you try different things imo.
Congrats to Rose. One of the very best we've ever seen and same his career was cut short with the injuries but he should 100% be in the Hall of Fame. But why can't they do these ceremonies after the game? Doing them at half time never made sense to me.

I'm sorry but how does Kat banging knees with Lavine equate to overuse by Thibs?
Kat's minutes PG this year are right at his career avg - almost spot on.
In addition I think Kat went for what 21? points in the 4th and 44 / 16 tonight.
I'm not a fan of Thibs bench use (he should be using guys more) but connecting banging knees to overuse is a reach.

I agree on using Mitch for another player but I tend to think that player should be a guard or at least a player who can take some pressure off Brunson and make plays with the ball.

I LOVE KAT BUT HE IS ONE OF THE LEAGUES BIGGEST DRAMA QUEENS AND ALL HIS TEAMMATES KNOW IT.
The faces towns making to accentuate contact on his drives make me cringe sometimes … not to mention when he acts as if he got a season ending injury before proceeding to play the rest of the game

Knicks: by far healthiest starting 5 in the season this year
Also Knicks: completely broken down from Thibs minutes

IMO we need a legit backup PG too but if we can only make one move this year it needs to be a forward. Kolek will be ready next year and he and Payne and Deuce is enough depth there. We have zero forward bench depth.

Thibs saw workout, pledged to play KAT more minutes.
Kat averaging 34.6 minutes this year and career average is 34.0.
Thibs really not pushing him that hard if we are being honest.
He's really pushing Mikal/OG/Hart
Mikal avg is 39.0 and career only 33.
OG avg is 36.5 and career only 29.7.
Josh avg is 37.6 and career only 29.8.
Brunson is also way over career avg but he's right where he's been ~35 MPG the last 3 years.
It's really the 3 wings he's running extra HOT.

It's weird because as fans we could all quickly see the team was completely dead early 3rd quarter to end of period - no effort, no energy, no nothing and yet in these situations Thibs will continue to just ride the starters as the hole gets bigger.
If anything the NBA bench should be utilized when your team is clearly physically/mentally spent - that was obvious from the beginning of game last night --- we were just coasting and leading off offense with ZERO defense being played.
DLeethal wrote:The faces towns making to accentuate contact on his drives make me cringe sometimes … not to mention when he acts as if he got a season ending injury before proceeding to play the rest of the game
Have seen a few times this year where Kat is laying on ground as if dead and teammates casually standing around him not even concerned with him.
He's a perfect example of a guy who would get more calls if he would just ACT LESS and not cry/scream on every single drive.
LOVE HIM but its kind of comical.
