Knicks · It's Kolek time... (page 1)

How does a team fix shooting problems? How about catch and shoot? Those are higher percentage shots for any player in the league. Who is the best passer on the team? That would be Kolek.

The answer is simple. Let Kolek run the bench crew. We are not winning big unless we can get better production from the bench. Once we get better production from the bench we can play our starters less. It's a vicious cycle and Tyler Kolek is who can break that cycle for us

I love the Kolek pick up and agree that he's probably the best passer on the team but is he currently able to defend against NBA talent? I don't know the answer because we haven't seen enough to judge his defense. He seems to give good effort on the court on that end.

The fact that you have to ask that question means he has not played enough time. We have no idea. He seemed to do fine that game where he played in both G League and the NBA due to injuries. Still the sample size is not enough. He was + 11 in 12 minutes. I also think his defense is not as bad as people think. People think it is the worst because he makes a single mistake then Thibs gets his panties in a bunch and takes him out for the rest of the month. When the starters make the same mistake multiple times that game and he ignores it. How many times was OG backdoored in a single game? like 5 or 6 times? Happened to Tyler once and he was pulled for the month.

Payne had a great game against Toronto and then found his minutes cut afterward. Now he seems more out of rhythm, but the weird thing is he's actually made 1/3 of our 3 pointers over the last 2 games. The Knicks shooting slump is rampant. Bridges 3 point slump has returned, OG has been in a shooting slump for over a month, Brunson has been in a shooting slump for a couple of weeks, and KAT has also struggled from 3 lately after a hot start.

Add to that the absence of McBride over the last 4 games and you have a guy who shoots in bunches off the team.

I'm not sure Kolek solves the problem when its such a team wide issue at the moment.

KNICKSBIGCATS @ 1/7/2025 8:51 AM
My take:
Take it inside and be physical. That will help open up the 3 point perimeter.

Honestly does it really matter if he’s not ready defensivley.

If we put him with McBride, Hart, OG and KAT you’re telling me we can’t run pick and rolls and pick and pops for 12 minutes a night.

The alternative is to have 4/5 starters top 5/6 in minutes in the entire league. You beat who’s in front of you and we beat a lot of garbage teams.

Jazz - 16pt win
(OG - 41 minutes, Bridges - 44 minutes, Hart - 45 minutes)

Wizards - 20pt win
(Brunson - 36 minutes, Hart - 41 minutes)

Magic - 23pt win
(Bridges 44 minutes, Brunson 37, Hart 38)

Hornets - 24 pt win
(Bridges - 47 min, OG - 40min)

Pelican - 33 pt win
(Bridges - 36 min)

There are minutes in these games you can get him some time. Thibs has forgotten more basketball than we all know combined.

But his core players always break down, need to figure out how to steal minutes for our guys asap.

It’s actually on the coach to break the cycle! Kolek can’t do anything from the bench.

We’ve had good games with tons of assists- so the ball movement and shooting (need both) can be there.

I do think part of the problem is guys are tired- they’ve been over worked.

It’s amazing how other coaches (like Orlando coach) utilize their bench and Thibs sticks to his same philosophy, which in turn puts the ownership back on the starting 5 to get in shape for Thibs short rotation.

I believe the writing is on the wall and most teams / coaches see this as a weak link they can take advantage of. If I had a bunch of athletes, all I would say is run these dudes into the ground. Make the starting 5 fight for every possession until their defense weakens.

Playing the starters heavy minutes forces us to look and play with less energy than the other team, during the second half of games. I hope this isn’t a trend that other coaches will follow and Thibs begins to opens his rotation, especially when Mitch is back.

I would love to see two full units. But that’s not a Thibs thing.

Perhaps my favorite Knick Squad of all time:

Good times!
Still remember watching Trent Tuckers make the shot to change the time rule.

Wait, these guys were on the team at the same time?

It's time for a Kolek call?

I don't know. Those calls from prison, uh, I mean the Thibs bench can get expensive.
ramtour420 @ 1/8/2025 6:11 PM
Not sure if the BingBong generation can appreciate a fine joke about collect calls. It's their loss...

How does one justify jumping over Payne?
Who is shooting 40% from three and 16/6 per 36?

I like Kolek but maybe it’s more like Payne needs more time?

Oh absolutely. Kolek at PG, running PnR with Achuwa. Payne, Deuce and Shamet waiting for a kickout behind the 3 point line. That's the perfect scenario.
