As for the Sovereign Saudi money invading like they did with golf? Thats a legit threat.
Is it for real? could it happen? Or does the threat actually make for that money to be opened up so they can buy American sports franchises like they did in European soccer?
If Lebron and a group is awarded an NBA franchise, then that eliminates a threat.
NBA at some point has to some how tie in some euro markets. If they wait then there is too much demand and someone will.
That Saudi wealth fund can sustain losses to getting the foothold. they did force a merger of sorts with Golf and some players got paid a ton to be a pawn in that battle. Whose to say Cooper Flagg, or another top rookie can't just walk out and take a 50mil year pay day? If Wemby was a free agent out of Europe, what could he command for a 10 year deal? A billion aggregate?
Would not be hard for them to raid the WNBA as they are not paid well. Question is who makes really good money in women basketball? Euro leagues pay better. I don't know the women leagues very well overseas. Players go but seems begrudgingly so. We never hear who is the champs, or even what leagues they play in. You think Paige Buehers would turn down 100mil deal over 6 years to play in the WNBA for $250k? Her endorsements will still be nice but they could still be available internationally.
At the same time, the WNBA makes no money here so perhaps NBA would be happy to sell its franchises off and let someone else foot the bill?
We'll see if Maverick get some Saudi money like LIV golf. Can definitely be where some combo of Global talent that doesn't necessarily want to move and older NBA talent converges, if they get the money to spend. You set up a league without aprons and caps and the money flows more freely and a lot can happen.
