Knicks · Bullish on Hukporti (page 1)

(It worked with Deuce, so what the hell.)

I really like this kid. He's shown intensity on D and ability to block shots. Very good court awareness and can sneakily block shots from players he's not currently guarding. Very good lob threat, and has shown the ability to put in a midrange shot. Good BBall IQ.
He definitely will be at least a primary backup C capable, not an end of the bench 3rd string stiff. Clearly much more skill than Simms.
He just needs to learn to limit his fouls to allow him to stay on the floor.
I really loved seeing Thibs do the unexpected and run him NEXT TO KAT last night. To me this means Thibs is looking for ways to get him more minutes off the bench. This could be his inflection point. Buy now!

Last night: 5 RBs, a block, and a nice midrange floater in 16 minutes (and 3 fouls - his bugbear).
PER 36:
9 RB,
2.6 Blocks,
7 pts,
1.6 assists(great indicator of his awareness at this current usage)
(and 5 PF).

And I think his PPG are not even scratching the surface. I think he's got much more in the bag.

Should you invest $1,000 in Hukporti right now?
Before you buy stock in Hukporti, consider this:
When Deuce McBride made this list on 12/4/2021... if you invested $1,000 at the time of our recommendation, you’d have $854,317!

He definitely feels like iHart 2.0 and needs to clean up the fouls like Mitch cira 2019-2021.
VDesai @ 2/21/2025 10:14 AM
I mean this guy is a steal at the end of the draft. There's no doubt. He is active and is skilled and he is a mean SOB.

Recovered from that achilles injury nicely. This is the iHart recuperation player.

I do wonder if playing Huk next to KAT is a KAT/Huk thing, a preview of the KAT/Mitch thing or just a Huk playing well thing. Could be all 3.

Regardless, it's a good thing.

Think it's all 3. Thibs seems to have confidence in both Huk in drop and Huk switching. He's got pretty good feet/mobility. I know Sims had the data analytics, but I feel better with Huk as a defender. Maybe he fouls too much, but I think the aggression is what he's asked to provide.

martin @ 2/21/2025 10:27 AM
Huk has very very good defensive bball IQ, that's another thing that separates him. I wish I could recall the exact play from last night but I though he rotated and directed another Knicks defender to rotate properly in a scramble play in a way I know Sims could never do and maybe even Mitch may not have done as emphatically with his voice.

I agree. The timing seems to indicate that Thibs is warming up that idea of twin towers approach.

Yeah I'm surprised at how quick his drop is. Makes KAT look foolish.

James Nnaji is the same way. I hope we get to see him in a Knicks uniform at some point in a year or 2. He is a physical beast too but super unpolished.

Nalod @ 2/21/2025 10:50 AM
See him have a good game then implore the coach to do it more.
Fans want to think they know better. We jettisoned Sims to Milwaukee to open the minutes for Huk.
Learning Portis failed his drug test end of November. League could not rescind the suspension but perhaps there was a lot of back and forth to make sure there was in fact a error of judgement. There was. Portis fucked up. Mistakes happen and perhaps it was innocent. but the rules exist for a reason.
So Bucks had time to get something done to replace him. Sort of....Sims was a low cost low risk body. Good opportunity for him and for Huk!!!
Huk was injured, got uninjured, played his ass off, showing his potential, and gaining trust. Great stuff.
Mitch is no guarantee to return, he could get hurt again. We ready. Huk is playing nice. Huk exceeded Sims. Development!!!

Prediction? Got to talk about Mitch. At 12mm next season then a free agent we can keep him, let Huk back him up. He is not up to precious level yet but this is only his NBA rookie year. Maybe we let Precious walk? maybe we let Mitch walk after next year. If so, we good with Huk. If Mitch kicks ass the rest of the way and thru playoffs perhaps he is good trade bait. If not, or is not of trade value given his fragile nature and we don't want to extend him, we let him walk. Not everyone need be traded.

Man...Hukporti is climbing that deuce love tree for me. Defensive IQ is already there. Perfect Thibs role player.

That play you mentioned was great. And the one after that, where he volley balled that one block. He's a stud for sure. A replacement for Precious, if we lose him.

And Thibs playing Hukporti and Towns together. Or Precious and Towns together is 100% due to a future twin towers lineup with Mitch. I've noticed that with Thigs, and his rotations.

I just dont like Mitch and Hart in the starting lineup together. Can't have two players that don't shoot 3's very well, or at all with Mitch. That will crowd the paint and reduce the floor space for JB and Towns. Just makes since for Hart to come off the bench when Mitch returns as a starter.

franco12 @ 2/21/2025 12:40 PM
He is the best C defender we have. He knows how to move on the perimeter. Quick feet and natural ability on the d.

His fouls - some of them are wrong place at the wrong time, Ref had to blow a whistle and look - I’ll call it on the rook. Those should naturally go away as he gets more time and better.

Lots of groupie love to go around for the threesome of you, Huk, and Deuce.

Going into end of season, I’d be open to this 10 man rotation for a bit. Not really sure how Mitch comes back, but it seems they took him slow and he appears to be in good conditioning. Could cut minutes going into end of year and give the bench some time to gel. Got a lot of different looks they can put out there.

We need still need a sniper off the bench with some size next year.
