Knicks · KD and Giannis (page 1)

I am not a fan of KD and think Giannis is more of a pipedream but... these are the only 2 players that we could possibly obtain in the offseason that could fit in seamlessly while still retaining our Villanova core + KAT. KD has one year left so it would be short-term if we considered him.

I think KD will be moved regardless and while I don't really like him and know he's old - he could probably be had for a reasonable deal involving OG, Mitch (picks) or some other combination that still allows us to keep Brunson and KAT (likely 3 team deal). I personally am not advocating for this move but even if our chemistry improves we are lacking in firepower and defensive intensity. KD would fix the offensive part and would match up better vs the Tatums, Lebrons, etc... I really like OG and hope he stays healthy but not sure else where we could sub out one of our starters to acquire a better/fit starter that significantly improves us (unless we break up the Villanova core or move KAT).

I hope Mitch starts next to KAT because at least that improves our defense but don't think he's returning with a jump hook or any form of offensive game so we are limited in how much he can probably help us.

I don't think that breaking up the Vill core in the cards anytime soon so can anyone here think of a different player to swap out that a) we could possibly acquire and b) helps improve us with Brunson and KAT staying?

Don't think KD can lead a winning team anymore.

Giannis is a different story. Younger and a 2 way threat. If Giannis comes available because the Bucks are pointed won and the Knicks get slaughtered by the Celtics in the playoffs it will be a possibility or at minimum speculated. What works within the cap is OG+Mitch for Giannis. But there would probably need to be additional teams and picks flying around.

I thought the same of Butler, but he is showing he can do it still with Golden State. I do, however, agree about KD- but again, I have an open mind.

The real question is what is the move this off season- is it roster or coach that gets changed? I worry the FO is in love with Thibs and while he gets guys to play hard, he is not giving them a system that helps maximize their talents.

And if you are moving players- who are you keeping and building around? Is it JB and Kat? Honestly, I like Kat, but I think he is soft and if we could swap him for iHart, we’d have a much better record.

I would gladly take KD but I see him as a free agent option. Too much tread for e to want him to be Our Final Addition

Giannis? Yeah, sign me up. I feel like that's a double down on our identity

Giannis would be nice paired with KAT. The problem is that KAT would have to be go in any unlikely trade scenario.

We will need to look at all angles to get this team from 2nd tier to 1st tier. This is arguably the hardest leap to make in the NBA.

Boston made some tough decisions like trading their heart and soul and their defensive anchor Marcus Smart for Porzingis. They also made a big coaching shift.

Cleveland fired their coach after a few 50 win seasons. Many teams have fired successful coaches to get from 50 win fun team to a legit contender.

I'm not sure what our path is, but I think everything will be on the table. Packaging a couple wings for a KD or Giannis or a different max player who gets on the market. Or moving on from Thibs. Or even flipping KAT if we think the holes in his game on defense are too much to overcome, his value is sky high now and that's a savvy asset maneuver if you can flip depreciating assets like DDV/Randle for KAT and then flip KAT for something major.

Knicks are not out of options because they are out of picks but they are basically left with mega contract deals now and will have to part ways with players like they really like or the best coach we've had in decades.

Think a chip starts with having a top 10 player. Reason why I thought Lakers getting Luka was insane.
Then you have to put the right pieces around them.
Can’t say that KD or Giannis are on the right side of top 10.
Think both are players some are valuing based on their past.

I mean I could see a world where OG for KD makes sense. I didnt even want to mention it but OG for Butler made some sense too.

OG is so likable. Bring in the surly KD and when that does not work we can so easily hate on him!

Philc1 @ 2/25/2025 10:42 AM
0.0 desire for KD. He is a 36 year old cancer who will play about 50 games a year before demanding a trade in 2 years and won’t get us past the second round if that. He did us the biggest favor ever in 2019.

Giannis I would love and he wants to come here but it would be a king’s ransom probably OG, Mikal, Deuce, Hart and a bunch of draft picks.

Exactly and we'd be in worst shape with even less depth.

Could offer something built around Robinson, McBride, Bridges and remaining 1sts.

fishmike @ 2/25/2025 12:24 PM
Giannis and KAT are a nice combo
DLeethal @ 2/25/2025 12:54 PM
Superstar trades sometimes go for way less than you would think. A Giannis deal would be like a Luka deal. Something that happens fast and likely they will prefer to stay competitive with Dame still around. MIL doesn't seem like a tanking organization to me. I could see Hart, Mitch and OG - OR straight up for KAT and a pick ala Luka for AD and a pick.
DLeethal @ 2/25/2025 12:55 PM
When starts are traded for "assets" that's when you see picks galore. When stars are traded for good players you see way less picks fly around.
Nalod @ 2/25/2025 2:33 PM

Giannis and a trio of to build off?

Kat
Giannis
Brunson

Before any fantasy can occur recognize he brings a 50mil salary. Thats $140mm right there.
Im not sure how Celtics can keep that group together beyond this year,, but thats their business.

I'd think you have to trade OG and his $40mil, the great value that is Deuce, one of Mikal or Josh. Im sure after last weeks awful games vs Cavs and Celts thats not an issue for fans. The other not might have to be used in trade for picks to satisfy Milwaukee. OG and Deuce are nice pieces....But it will take more.

Im reluctant to trade OG because this is the kind of player that you win chips with.

Kat
Giannis
Brunson
OG
Shamet

I stuck Landry Shamet there as he might be one of those nice reclamation stories at a nice salary. Need these kind of dudes.

Even if you do this this is a likely two year window. Fans can't really handle that as demonstrated of late.
I doubt we can bring him in so its moot. KD? Its not about the past, its about how much he costs and what can he do going forward.

Panos @ 2/25/2025 2:53 PM
We ain't getting Giannis.

KD has been fools gold since leaving the warriors

martin @ 2/26/2025 10:17 AM

Not all KD's fault but he ain't the team lifter by himself anymore.

Not for nothing but Knicks with Julius, RJ, half a season from Mitch/Noel/DRose, Elfrid, Taj, IQ, OBi, Burks were 41-31 in 2020-21 COVID basketball era. That's wild.

Top heavy team poorly constructed and beset by injuries. Has all the markings of Isiah Thomas. This dumpster fire is the creation of the Owner.
This if the blame game is looking.
