It’s said that it takes 2 trade/free agency periods to come back from a trade that depletes assets like the KAT, Bridges offseason the Knicks had. That makes this summer the second cycle.
I’m pretty happy where this team is and confident that the Knicks will be able to add tremendous depth this offseason - judging solely by the number of available players.

A lot of players took one year deals last year. And a lot of mid- tier guys who could fit easily - in no particular order - Gary Trent, Tyus Jones, Malcom Brogdon, Larry Nance, Chris Boucher, Trey Lyles, Kevin Looney, DFS, Malik Beasley, Bruce Brown, Mason Plumlee.
Brunson / _____ / Kolek
Hart / McBride / _____
Bridges / ____ / Dadiet
OG / _____ / ____
KAT / Robinson / Huk
2Way:
McCullar
Beauchamp
Watson
Free Agents
1. Achiuwa (Bird)
2. Payne (Non-Bird)
3. Shamet (Non-Bird)
4. Wright (Non-Bird)
5. Tucker (Non-Bird)
It’s the kind of offseason to fill in the blanks. I’d mess around for a JJJ trade - he fits to perfectly. Or for a healthy Herb Jones. But I think this team can fill in really well on this cycle and truly make their run. I’m not writing this season off, but I think they could solidify the rotation with the players that will be available.
Too early!
But- I do think we have to look at moving someone like Bridges/KAT, and try to get a 2 for 1 to create depth.
I think you have to look at the moves the other teams feeling the weight of the second apron have been able to make and have some realistic expectations about what’s possible.
They are going to make a decision on a Bridges contract and how that affects the cap situation. Do we extend or let him go into his final year and become a FA in 2026?

You don’t even need to, the depth is already there, just not ready this year.

I think McCullar will be in the rotation before Dadiet. Also favor a different starting lineup when Mitch is up to speed.
Brunson / Kolek / Wright
Bridges / Deuce / shooter looking for contract
OG / McCullar
KAT / Hart
Robinson / Huk / Bropez
To really make the most of Bridges skill set, I’m guessing Brunson would have to become more of a pass first PG. which is a tough ask of one of the best scoring PGs in the league. We have to see what happens when Brunson comes back. Does Bridges numbers fall back to earth?
I believe this dynamic has to be sorted out, whether Bridges can play like he is now, when Brunson gets back. Or is he better suited for an instant offense bench role, who also happens to be an elite defender? Once that’s sorted out the FO can build from there. It would be a waste to put Bridges somewhere in the rotation where he isn’t playing his best. Does Deuce start? Do we make a trade? I think the FO/Coaching staff has to know what to with Bridges first.
Knicks need to fix the bench by adding another wing. That’s either by moving Hart to the bench and adding a good fitting starter, or using the CAA connects to convince a player to come for cheap. With so few teams having cap space, maybe a good wing is willing to take the taxpayer MLE.
Kennard, LeVert, LaRavia, Trent Jr, Prince. I’m thinking someone that level. Mitch, Deuce, and Kolek (I think he’s ready next year) plus that player signed. Hope chemistry develops with the starters, who didn’t get a training camp together. See where things are and re-assess for the trade deadline next year.
Just make sure we have enough salary to send out in the Divo deal.
Is Shamet become the player we thought/hoped he could be.
He had a rough season last year but came to the Thibian for a reason.
It appears to have been a process and then with injury an opportunity to play.
Kennard and Trent Jr. might be good snipers.

I don't think KAT is going to be full time PF. He's going to get significant mins at C. I don't know why we need Lopez.
I think what this team is missing is a long wing off the bench that can score/shoot. Something like what Dadiet is supposed to be, eventually. I'm not 100% convinced he specifically is the answer, not sure about his motor. But someone in that mold.

I bet if we traded Brunson we could get like 4 guys to really help.
We got a championship to win first!
Only "reach" player I want for this squad is JJJ. I'd take another 2 cycles of depletion for that. The idea would be to move Bridges and OG to SG and SF respectively to give them better comparative size to their position. Brunson/Bridges/OG/JJJ/Kat is pretty much an ideal lineup. I don't really think it is feasible though.
Without that, at PG I probably am not ready to hand the keys to the second unit to Kolek yet. But I could be convinced that Delon Wright is doing enough to keep that or that Payne is doing enough to stay. A preference for guys that have already played here.
At SG, I am ready to let McCullar take the 3rd slot behind Deuce.
At SF, I think we want a legit 3&D to backup both SF and PF. That Herb Jones for Robinson trade is still in my mind, though I don't really want to give up MitchBeast (salary matching is the only reason for the conversation). I like the idea of poaching a young 3&D that can rest Bridges and OG. I don't think Dadiet is ready yet. Keeping my eyes on Beuchamp though.
At PF, I probably am moving Precious. I'm looking at Jaylin Williams as the top choice. Potential starting rotation capable player. I also like Chris Boucher and Trey Lyles. We have an option on Tucker in the 3rd slot. I am open to that for what he is. Taj 3.0.
At Center, we are set with KAT, Beast and Huk. If we try and move elsewhere, Mitch, Deuce and Hart are the only real options to match salaries.
I am not really looking for a makeover here.
We also have 2 late 2nds. They should fill up two way slots.
What if we were able to turn the Shamet/Achiuwa rotation spots into DiVo and Boucher?
VDesai wrote:What if we were able to turn the Shamet/Achiuwa rotation spots into DiVo and Boucher?
Shamet is playing really well. He is pretty ideal with the D, rebounding and now that his shot came along he is very solid. Divo I simply cannot say no to tho :)

I like how Shamet is playing now, but he's a hot/cold shooter and his size limitations make him tough to stand up on the wing. DiVo is also small but tends to play more physical and hits the boards a bit harder. There's other guys thought that could be your wing sniper - Trent etc. that could make sense (aside from Shamet).
Shamet is mostly a SG/2 guard, no?
Panos wrote:VDesai wrote:What if we were able to turn the Shamet/Achiuwa rotation spots into DiVo and Boucher?
How?
Boucher is an FA and prob will be MLE or vet min
DiVo is complicated
VDesai wrote:What if we were able to turn the Shamet/Achiuwa rotation spots into DiVo and Boucher?
Boucher for sure can be had. He’s close friends with OG and should come cheap. He’s a shot blocker and floor spacer. Good 3rd big and insurance to Mitch. KAT/ Mitch/ Boucher and second year Hukporti is a good group of bigs.
