On having his name called at the draft- He doesn’t remember much of it as he was shocked, and didn’t know he was going to the Knicks. “For starters, you are very happy to be in the NBA. Then, the Knicks, we know that franchise so it’s even better.”
On knowing he was going to be selected- He said there was no 100% certainty but they climbed upon draft rankings.
On testing his luck on NBA- For him it was all about experience. He wanted to come here early at 19 so he can learn the game, that’s different from Europe, and be more established by years 3 and 4.
On playing on a big franchise with pressure vs a younger, less scrutinized team- He said that while all situations have their peculiarities, he raves about how good his teammates are in NY and also about the coach being good for young players as he taught them discipline.
On the biggest differences for him: The number of games, how quickly you have to recover because you have another game in one or two days. Talks also about playing against the players he previously saw on TV.
When they show his highlights against WSH one of the men, who I assume is a coach, states the importance of always working hard and Pacome agrees repeatedly.
On playing in the playoffs- “Its always a pleasure after all the hard work. I tried to help however I could even if the score wasn’t going our way…”
On what he learned while playing on the NBA- He mentions the importance of having your routine, as every player has one and as a young player it’s important for him to see that. Also impressive for him was the scouting: “on defense, nothing is done accidentally or by chance…”
On fans in the playoffs- “It was crazy. Usually you say that NBA fans aren’t like fans in Europe, but I fell on a team that I don’t think we can really say that…”
On what the team lacked so it could still be playing in June- he talks about details, discipline on key points and “…we talked a lot about transition and it was very problematic for us…”
On next season- “Honestly I’m focused on Summer League and the rest is out of my hands…”
On his objectives for Summer League- “…to show that you can have a spot on next year’s team…”
He was curiously asked if he sees himself as a a point guard or a small forward (seemingly to bring Brunson to the discussion- “I see myself as a small forward but I first trained as a point guard…”
On Brunson- “A very clutch player… a natural leader both on and off the court…”
On the Hack-a-Mitch- “It was surprising, especially on the first game… but after that he was working really hard on that…”

I have high hopes for this kid. He seems bright, we obviously saw the talent and he seems determined to become the best player he can be at the right time. Thanks!!

Hope he kills it in summer league and training camp. If he succeeds and cracks the rotation what do you think Dadiet translates to, what's his best comp ? At least for the next few seasons
Alpha1971 wrote:Can Sam Merrill be DDV 2.0 ? Can Gary Trent be the guy ?
Merrill is really a catch-shoot guy from what I can tell -- extremely quick release makes tough shots but has to work super hard to get his shot off. Don't see him as a Donte type with the ball and not the same athleticism.
Trent I've always been underwhelmed by but per that KNF clip he's only 26 despite seeming to be around for quite some time. Always felt something was missing with him either mentally or just something off with his game. Still if cheap pretty reliable shooter.

My concerns with Pacome were primarily around his speed/quickness --- 1st step didn't look great and in general he seems to move sluggishly for such a young kid. Also didn't like how quickly he picked up his dribble when pressured -- maybe that is a Euro thing but would like to see him use his strength to push thru some tights spots with the ball.
His shot looks pure to me - like the way he cuts, quick release ---- I think he maybe lost a bunch of confidence being banished by Thibs.

I can see Pac developing into a Batum/Battier type connector. I don't think he will be a reliable shot creator, but he seems to be smart moving the ball and he has good instincts as a cutter. I also like how he uses positioning as defender. He didn't shoot consistently on the big team or the G-League, but I like his shot mechanics.
Why, at age 25, given his scoring/shooting track record, was he a Vet Min signing last year? I think the new CBA really hurt him - very few teams willing to go over the aprons and use the Non Tax-Payer MLE and very few teams able to offer a contract more sizeable. I think he probably could have made more, but figured taking a vet min on a very good team with that could offer him a sizeable role would do more for his value. I think there's very little shot he takes a min or even TPMLE after taking the paycut last year, but we'll have to see how his market develops.
Anyway I don't think there's that much difference between him and Beasley. I'd probably lean to Trent, all things being equal.

Man Burks feels like he should be in his 40s now?

If he can shoot 40% from 3 I don’t mind him being 40
Its crazy - with the apron rules, very few players actually got MLE (taxpayers and non taxpayers) last year.

With what cap space ?

They have the taxpayer mid-level exception which they can use to sign either player (or a different veteran) and I’m thinking Horford could sign for the vet minimum (or whatever they have available) to ring chase since he’s 39. He could also be interested in playing with his friend, mentee, and Dominican national teammate, KAT.

I assume you are going to try to sneak Thibs back as well as Burks.

Taxpayer exception likely puts the past second apron, depending on their available roster spots. Also, I'm not sure that Spencer isn't washed. I'll trust the FO to make that determination if he is FA candidate.

That would be amazing. Horford for the 5.7M and Dinwiddie for the minimum.
Alpha1971 wrote:Can Sam Merrill be DDV 2.0 ? Can Gary Trent be the guy ?
Neither are Donte but for 5.7M either of them would be fine. Solid 8th man in addition to our top 7.

It does not. 5:50 mark for the numbers.
Top 7 rotation players, 4 youngins in Huk WhoYourDaddy Kolek McCullar, 2 vet mins leaves you $7m below second apron.
Pick your poison.

What are you guys planning to do with Bridges who is extension eligible and going into the last year of his contract?

He will be extended. That’s an apron concern for 2027. Not next season. Even so, the Knicks would go into next offseason below the second apron because Mitch expires. His contract will likely dictate if they decide to go into the second apron. Remember that’s 13M off the books, which should make up the difference in a Mikal extension.

Yes but 16 teams have the non taxpayer MLE which is around $12 million. The knicks will be able to sign a couple useful bench players this offseason but we need to manage expectations
