He could also be interested in playing with his friend, mentee, and Dominican national teammate, KAT.
Yes but 16 teams have the non taxpayer MLE which is around $12 million. The knicks will be able to sign a couple useful bench players this offseason but we need to manage expectations

Taxpayer exception likely puts the past second apron, depending on their available roster spots. Also, I'm not sure that Spencer isn't washed. I'll trust the FO to make that determination if he is FA candidate.

He will be extended. That’s an apron concern for 2027. Not next season. Even so, the Knicks would go into next offseason below the second apron because Mitch expires. His contract will likely dictate if they decide to go into the second apron. Remember that’s 13M off the books, which should make up the difference in a Mikal extension.
The cap goes up every year based on an increase of league revenue so I’m not worried about the Second Apron yet. Plus raising the cap is the oldest trick in the book Stern and now silver use to get certain players from small markets to big markets like the Lakers. We have other tricks up the sleeve like dumping Hart’s contract in 2 years when he’s 32 and an expiring contract on a team that’s below the cap by packaging him with a draft pick.

Remember the numbers for easy math. Knicks have 10 players under contract. Their core 7 plus last year’s 3 rookies. They are 11.5M under the second apron 5.7M for the TPMLE, 2.3M cap hit for vet minimum, and 1.2M for second round exception. Just work backwards from the 11.5M with combinations to fill slots 11-14. So we need 4 players.
The easy math is the MLE, 2 vet minimum and 1 second rounder (McCullar, 2025 drafted player, Nnaji, or Jokubaitis) leaves them right at the second apron. They may want to leave some wiggle room for a 15th player later in the year, so I’m guessing they use slightly less than the full 5.7M.

Yeah, not trading that pick. Also like we see teams leap from back of the lottery to the top spots and team in a top spot can fall back out of the top 8. Would suck for Washington but it could happen. We have to keep that lottery ticket in pocket

Yes good discussion. Now you can see why we added 3 second rounders to the roster last year and took Dadiet at a low salary slot, to field the required amount of players and also stay below the aprons while making the big trades we made and adding salary.
I think you would rather have a 2nd then a late first on this salary environment. Having a first who doesnt crack yhe rotation is more compromising salary wise then a 2nd round prospect

Those contracts count as 1.2M against the cap, which is half of what a vet minimum contract counts. Vet minimum have the same cap hit no matter how many years a player is in the league. So a player with 10 years experience might make 3.5M but it always counts as 2.3M towards the cap.
