A few notes as we head into Day 3 of NBA free agency:

What’s next for the Knicks after the Jordan Clarkson and Guerschon Yabusele signings?

As things currently stand, they probably only have enough money for another veteran minimum contract.

According to Yossi Gozlan of the Third Apron podcast, the Knicks would be slightly over the second apron ($207.8 million) if they added a veteran to the roster.

(New York will be hard-capped at the second apron after it uses the tax-payer midlevel exception to sign Yabusele).

I believe the Knicks do want to add another veteran free agent. To do so, they’d need to sign a player to a rookie free agent deal and trim around $36,000 in team salary. This theoretically can be done if Yabusele takes slightly less than the full taxpayer midlevel exception. If Yabusele has the full midlevel, the Knicks would need to shed salary via trade to get under the second apron.

As noted earlier, they have had interest in bringing back Landry Shamet. Shamet also has interest from contenders in both conferences. The Knicks have also checked in on free agent Ben Simmons, per sources familiar with the matter. But people briefed on the matter say a decision on that roster spot isn’t expected until after the head coach is hired.

Simmons has met with three other teams and is expected to make a decision soon, per people familiar with the matter.

looks like Shamet could still be an option if Yabu takes 36k less.

If he is healthy and wants to play, he did have the skill to do everything other than score at an elite level. Good ballhandler, passer and a disruptive 5 position defender.

Of course he never plays and doesnt want to play so the theory of Ben Simmons, even as a role player, is greater than the reality.

Don't think we have any chance to sign him anymore, just interesting to note we reached out. Clearly we were looking at secondary ballhandlers /backup PGs and guys that might be able to play mins next to Brunson.

But pretty sure that comes at the cost of McCullar if I'm understanding his situation correctly.

I think I'd keep McCullar over a vet at this point in time

Why? What has McCullar actually done in the nba? McCullar has a better shot at a 2way unless he balls out in SL. Even then if you can sign a proven vet you do it.

Shamet, Wright, or Simmons ?

Begley saying Shamet is getting much interest from teams in both conferences.
Probably more than the $42 dollars the Knicks have available.
Closer to the $50 Ben Simmons may take.

Best hope is that our youngins have a nice step forward.

Get your hands out of your pockets.

If choice is Shamet or Wright give me Wright. Bigger, better defender and can guard 1,2,3. Simmons on min is great. Shamet improved through the season as his health improved. But going with MCcullar is not bad either we are talking 12 or 13th man.

So one of Dia, Nnaji or Dick Paint would have to be signed. I'm guessing Nnaji.

What color?

I think KFS also mentioned the Knicks could do the same thing the with Shamet and the other dude from Westchester. They could wait a few weeks and sign someone when the vet minimum number is lower. Still would leave little room under the second apron.

Without seeing either of these guys in SL yet, Nnaji makes sense from a roster standpoint but I have to wonder if as part of the Yabu signing, the agent that represents both Yabu and Dia, would indicate a lean towards Dia.

I think Dia is probably happy enough with the fact he got drafted. From the agent's standpoint, it's a nice feather in his cap to point too when recruiting other players. I'm not too certain they'll whether they get a two-way or a contract under the second round exception.

Would be an ambitious reclamation project. If he’s willing to play for non taxpayer MLE I’d give him a shot.

The one that is already filled by Yabu?

Shucks. Loved the idea of what his potential was but he just never got things going.
