Knicks · Coaching Candidates (page 1)

I keep waiting to hear more about coaching candidates. I keep hearing that other organizations are denying us permission

So that means we’re likely getting an assistant . I would say Johnnie Bryant is the top candidate, James Borrego really piqued my interest, and Mike Brown really should get an honest interview imho.

Any other names that should be considered? Any international or g league names?

Mike Brown is a good coach but I don't know if he is an upgrade. He probably could improve the offense.

I would really like to revisit JVG.

To hell with that restraining order!

Some random thoughts.

1) Often times the assistants are more important than the head coach. If I understand the Taylor Jenkins drama in Memphis, much of it was related to the tension from replacing Jenkins assistants with ones more equipped to run a modern offense - and their failure to have a solid defense. For instance, Sean Sweeney is credited with the implementation of the defense that Kidd is otherwise known for. In the same sense, when hiring Thibs, the FO handpicked Thibs staff and over the last 5 years he replaced them with his people. I’m still quite high on Bryant, but I hope the FO is researching assistants as much as the head coach. We know that they have a habit of bringing in the best staff possible, from analytics to medical team. In my head this could be as much as bringing fresh staff as a head coach. Like the Suns pick of Jordan Ott, I think the search has to be for a motion offense coach with a strong aggressive defensive style.

2) Even if I had an idea of whom I wanted to be the next head coach, one of the strongest analytical approaches to institutional development would be to gather opinions from respected competitors on what they would do with the roster, the offensive systems. Interview your enemy and ask them how to improve. Not saying Johnnie Bryant is our guy; but I am saying that I would seek the wisdom of the crowd before finalizing my deal.

3) I genuinely hope the idea is to bring in the best coach to implement a modern motion offense over standard pick and roll and a defense focused on defending the three and having the communication and decision making to guard motion offenses.

In short, I’m ok with the process. But I hope this leads to modernization.

The more I think about it, Sean Sweeney might be the best guy for the job. Or a combination of Sweeney and James Borrego. Especially if Hurley isn’t there. I’d really expect the Knicks to put together an all star coaching staff.

We just fired his clone.

Just hire Malone already.

Leaning towards T Jenkins in terms of available guys but still wondering if we have a shot at Kidd.

Everything very quiet -- you'd think maybe one of the HC's we targeted under contract would come out and say I have NO INTEREST in coaching Knicks.

You don't want to see his Civic again?

Was competitive in Houston, but couldnt go deep in the playoffs. As an assistant sure!

I have to admit there is no coach available that I'm super high on or excited about. All of them come with question marks. Sucks there is no 1991 Pat Riley out there.

I will be surprised based on what's happened if Leon goes with Johnnie Bryant. It's hard to explain to the media and fan base you went with a rookie coach after asking teams about their experienced coaches under contract and how the goal now is to win a championship.

Im hearing Rick Brunson!

So we gave up Thibs style for Thibs style? With less effectiveness.

“Mike Brown's coaching on the Sacramento Kings was met with several criticisms, primarily regarding his defensive schemes, in-game adjustments, and player rotations. Fans and analysts expressed dissatisfaction with his team's defensive struggles, suggesting a lack of a cohesive defensive plan and an inability to adapt to opposing teams. Rotations were also a point of contention, with players often receiving inconsistent minutes regardless of performance. Additionally, some questioned Brown's ability to manage the team's energy and create a winning atmosphere“

The Amick article is kind of hot garb.

That said I'm interested in Jenkins. He got a raw deal in Memphis. He got replaced for someone who was incredibly ineffective. Jenkins developed that team pretty well and had really good results save for their disastrous Ja suspension/injury year.

Something I will never get over in the Thibs and JB era is how we lost 4 playoff series when we were favored to win. 2021 vs Atlanta, 2023 vs Miami, 2024 vs Indiana, 2025 vs Indiana. We were favored in all 4 and lost them all.

Man you have some heavy Knicks PTSD. You are literally trying to find ways to upset yourself and feel negative.
