Knicks · Did we address all issues? (page 5)

Took him a long time to get back where his shot was comfortable. This is a guy that creates a bit of space and has to get that shot up quickly.
Perhaps he can find a bit more money and a better potential role on another team? He is playing for his career and security like DDV was when we signed him. He needed more last year and was a shame he got hurt. With new coach perhaps its not happening here.

He also represents continuity and rewarding players for playing the right way. Which is a large part of creating a culture. It goes beyond the vet min or whatever it is contract or cap space.

Seems like the only thing keeping Shamet off the squad is the hope of adding a PG/Simmons?

Likely scenario is they roll with what they are familiar with in Shamet and wait till mid season to address any obvious needs.

The Knicks could have wrapped up their offseason by signing Shamet and called it a day.

They have not.

Unemployed.

Always liked him. Not sure how much he has left in the tank but dependable shooter.

Like this possibility as well:

“ Melton, 27, last played for the Golden State Warriors a season prior. The USC product scored 10.3 points per game in 2024-25.

A reliable ball handler, Melton would be a great depth option next to Jordan Clarkson, as well as Miles McBride, in the second unit for New York.”

Yes - good point.

Listening to K Smith on with Begley the other day and they both confirmed a point that Knicks can't sign McCullar's and a vet min because McCullar makes a bit too much on his current deal. Mentioning McCullar because I believe he will be on the roster.

They also mentioned the possibility of Knicks wanting to sign BOTH Shamet and Simmons but noted that in order to do so they'd have to trade a current (under contract) player in a trade where we send player out and take NOTHING back.

K Smith used Dadiet as an example where Knicks send him out and bring back for ex. 2 2nd rounders. A trade like this in theory could allow McCullers to stay and Knicks to add 2 vet min deals for Shamet/Simmons.

The thought being if we are really going for it does mgmt/Brown prefer to put their fate in hands of a young kid or VETS.

I like the idea of BOTH Shamet/Simmons because Shamet helps with shooting while Ben defensive size and ball movement.

If we could do something like this not sure which young players contract would make it work but I think I'd prefer we moved Kolek over the likes of Dadiet/Huck/McCullar.

Watching some extended clips of Simmons I feel like he could add value -- we really lack ball handling and decision making -- especially if it comes in 6'10" guy who can still defend.

Nalod @ 8/15/2025 11:26 PM
My simple thinking is Dadiet migth have more upside down the line given his age. If Kolek can't do it this year one has to think of this ceiling. I don't know scouts take on Dadiet. Could he be a D'andre Hunter type and if so when??
Is one of Josh or Deuce expendible for us given this window? What is the thought to resigning Mitch vs. let him play it out and perhaps this is in fact the year to push it all in the middle and go for it. Boston/Indy is in a down year, Philly likley won't be a threat. Its us and Cleveland for the moment. Milwaukke and ATL won't suck,, and Detroit still has another gear to hit.

So...........Knicks give up a yoot to cut salary and do what teams have to do now even if it hurts later?

We lack ball handling and decision making.... So your solution is to trade Kolek ? Hmm, I don't agree with that logic

Pehraps in return your brigning in two low price vets that can handle the ball? Simmons and Shamet or Brogdon?
If Kolek can't shoot that renders him not NBA quality in a role for a team that is going for it this year.

PassTheBall @ 8/16/2025 3:53 PM
Kolek will not be getting any minutes next year.

We should probably just bring back Shamet and skip the Ben Simmons thing but his defense and passing skills are still intriguing.

From the sound of it we are going to be playing fast basketball. System ball. Kolek might actually find more playing time than most think, provided his shot is there.

We already have Deuce and Clarkson playing PG off the bench.

Deuce is not a PG. Just because of his size you cannot call him a PG. ( Disclaimer he is one of my favorites on the team)

Clarkson I have never seen him play. If he is a PG off the bench that would be excellent.

Nalod @ 8/17/2025 12:15 PM
I will be pleasently suprised if Kolek can get minutes and be effective!
This is his plan and his time to assert the promise of his talent.
I'd be less suprised if he is done. With Kat and Mikal the timeline got accelerated to the hear and now.
With Mike Brown the schematic has changed. His summer assisgnment was changed. Summer league perhaps had him doing new things so its not a thing. He'll have camp to show up.
jaydh @ 8/17/2025 12:39 PM
If Simmons is going to be the backup PG, then I can see rationalizing moving on from Kolek.
Alpha1971 @ 8/17/2025 2:26 PM
Dadiet if he pops gives us a dimension we don't have. A 3/4 who can drive and shoot. Kolek' contract is too low to facilitate a vet min being added like Simmons. If we trade Kolek it may be to add McCuller to the team, I think.
ramtour420 @ 8/17/2025 5:17 PM
Let's pretend it's ECF. Do you want Simmons on your team or do you want to play against him? 10 years ago would not be sure. Now tho, with the new NBA he is a liability because it's 4 on 5. And I haven't even discussed his mental fragility. Let Indiana or Cavs or the Celtics have him.....

I’m just not sure he has enough of the winner mentality to make it work. Like he might be destined to not win a championship. I want a championship.

Nothing you say is wrong. I like a good reclamation story though. Put Simmon’s head aside for a moment. That’s hard.

In this first scenario, just think of him as an end of quarter defensive stopper for just a moment. Up 1 point with 12 seconds on the clock. Just want a stop. You could sign Delon Wright for that role. But Simmons is an elite defender at 6’10. You put Simmons, Bridges, OG, Robinson on the floor and that stop looks pretty good.

Next, let’s just let him run with Clarkson, Bridges, Yabu and Huk. His sole job is to get the ball out in transition and find the open man. Any doubt he will make the right pass in transition?

I’m not saying out this guy in the starting rotation. I’m not saying there is no risk. But he is a high reward upside play with bare minimum usage as a defensive stopper and run and gun transition PG.

I’d put him above Kolek on the depth chart.

Ok. I will give you that. With 12 secs left in the game and needing a stop is the only time he would be preferred over Kolek.Maybe. What if he gets a rebound and gets fouled immediately? Not such a great look now is it ?
