I’m visiting Australia this next summer. Where do you recommend I go in Sydney?

introduce yourself there as "Phil, the Drongo from America!"

Might want to say how long you will be there, and perhaps other cities or locations? You visiting someone? Touring? Cruise stop?
Cities are cultural experiences so if you into art? Food? Music? Architecture?
For me, I had limted travel experiences (my country count is up to 39 now), but then rainforest and south pacific tropic exeprience in a short 8 day window took me to Cairns. From there you can get to great barrier reef which was a bucket list item for me. Rented a 1967 MG convertable and drove to Mission beach and surrounding areas. This was in 1992.
In Sydney, Kings road has some interesting night life if thats your thing. Very relaxed blue laws.
In Cairns I bought some opels which proved to be a nice small investment for Mrs. Nalod to have some nice jewlery made from them. Our Friend is from Melbourne but Im sure has good advice for you.

ok that was wierd

Yes, adult convo's are for you. Imagine someone coming to NYC. To dispense a courteious response one gives more detail as depicted.
What you like to do is not what others would.

For someone who is an avid reader perhaps a historical book store or the Main brance of NY public library.
For you? A "Game Stop" store? Some people want food experiences. Would you recommend an "OutBack Steak house" to them? Ok, perhaps.

Go t about 3-4 gams for that season, 1972, and the chip year in 1973! Uncle died at age 48 that year which was a real heartbreak for me and my mom. He was a good man!

Meanwhile, we moved to Long island and DR J became an Net. They winning a chip in 1974 and 1976. Used to go to a lot of games as it was not far and inexpensive. I went to the very last ABA game which was final game 7 vs. Denver where Nets rallied from down 23 pts in second half! ABA folded, Nets, Pacers, Nuggs and Spurs all went to NBA. Knicks demanded a 6million dollar payment from nets and they were offered DR J, but instead wanted the money. Idiots! Dr J insteadwent to Philly, Nets after a bad year in NBA on Long island moved to New Jersey.

It was easy, my teams won chips in 1973, 1974 and 1976! No basketball chips since!!! Crazy......
Nalod moved to North Carolina many years ago but still Knicks are tops in my book!

Thanks for taking us through your journey to being a Knick fan, really interesting and pretty fascinating given the timing in relation to that golden era for the New York Knicks. The insights on Dr J was really interesting too, had no idea the Knicks could have landed him but blew it!

Sorry to also hear about your heartbreak at the time regarding your Uncle, sounds like you've got many fond memories of him, thanks for being so honest and open too.

Oh, and by the way - this really cracked me up 'introduce yourself there as "Phil, the Drongo from America!". Drongo is a very underrated word in Australia, I still get a laugh out of it whenever I hear it, it was widespread slang in the 80's but unfortunately it's dropped out of popular culture a bit now. Well done on the opal investment too!

And yes - the 'blue' laws in Kings Cross! I haven't visited the area for many years, however suspect it's still lined with 'gentleman's establishments'.

I’m visiting Australia this next summer. Where do you recommend I go in Sydney?

Hi Phil, congratulations on the upcoming trip to Australia and would absolutely be happy to pose some recommendations.

It largely gets down to your interests, there's something for everyone, natural beauty, history, nightlife, restaurants, culture & cities.

Broadly I'd recommend a bit of both if you have the time. Sydney is a beautiful city on the water, would recommend a boat cruise while you're there and possibly some whale watching if the southern whale migration season lines up. There's great fishing all over Sydney if that's your thing too.

There's many beautiful beaches in Sydney, Manly, Coogee & Bondi to name a few or if you have the time to travel a few hours South of Sydney there's stretches of unspoiled coast line, that even in the middle of summer, you'll have all to yourself. The Blue Mountains (Katoomba), about 2hrs by public transport west of Sydney are really beautiful too, if that may be of interest.

If you have time, like Nalod, would also recommend you get out of cities & go to Cairns, Darwin or Broome if you can, they're very far away but the far North of Australia is like another country. The South has pretty much been domesticated, the North is still a bit of a frontier, it's where the true Australia still lives on, the larrikinism, self deprecation and the real Aussie accents.

The natural beauty up there is untouched and very accessible, if you visit Cairns the Great Barrier Reef is fantastic, Darwin (Kakadu National Park) have some fascinating boat cruises along the wetlands (it's probably a bit like the Everglades) and Broome has probably the most beautiful beach I've ever been to, Cable Beach, and in the Australian winter (your summer) it's safe to swim - no crocodiles or stingers (dangerous jellyfish) The down side is, do not swim in any body of natural water up North no matter what time of year. Cable Beach in Broome, and only in the Australian winter, would be the only exception. The Great Barrier Reef is OK too with a tour group, crocodiles do not typically inhabit the reef nor do large sharks during the day light hours.

Oh and would certainly recommend a game of AFL/Australian Rules Football. It's a winter sport, you can see a game in Sydney but Melbourne and the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground) is the home of Australian Rules Football, if you want to be amongst 100,000 die hard Aussie footy fans, this is the place to do it, the MCG is the Madison Square Garden of Australia. If this interests you let me know your dates and I can let you know the big games & teams that will be playing at the time.

In fact if you want more info on any of the above feel welcome to reach out, always happy to chat/help out.

Thanks for the good info. I got a Great Barrier Reef tour at Cairns booked already I’m going to fly there.

Well done! Its been 30 years since I was there and had a great time.
Rented a car and drove around and visted a place call "Mission Beach" and "the boulders". Waterfalls and river bed with really large very round rocks. Ran into a business owner who rented out his 1967 MG convertable (yes, right side drive and had to shift with left hand). Super fun day and adventure. Lots of Opels for sale in Cairns!
