This is right. You can’t just trade him for whatever because your ceiling with him is higher than without, unless you’re replacing him with a Giannis. Even a guy like Jaren Jackson Jr. he’s a better fit but is the ceiling any higher ? And the floor of a 50-win team that underachieves in the playoffs will always be there no matter what.

How long until Towns contract expires? I know it would suck to be stuck with him during Brunson prime. I'd love to get 5 first round picks for him.

We aren’t stuck with him. He only has 1 year plus a player option. The options with him are open but I wouldn’t move him unless it’s a needed salary for a different star. He’s frustrating but still a star player. It will get better.

At this point, I'm willing to dump Towns to the Bulls. I'm prepared to finish the season with Nikola Vucevic at 5 (and his expiring contract); then figuring out how to re-route Ayo Dosunmu, Dalen Terry and Coby White for assets and/or fits. I'd also push the Bulls on their first in this year's draft or one in the distant future. That pick could be a coup for us and I think the Bulls are stupid/desperate enough to entertain it.

Vucevic would be addition by subtraction. He plays D. Can score inside. Most importantly he will not cost us any points because he is sitting down on the floor while opponents are running a fastbreak

He's a terrible rim protector though. I never realized this before but he is only 6"9'. I was under the impression he was at least 6"11', which would be ideal. At the very least, he doesn't play defense like a newborn baby giraffe. If we keep him, I think he'll come cheap at or around the vet's minimum next season; which would allow us to free up more money to also keep Mitch.

fitzfarm @ 1/16/2026 10:36 PM
To be honest, I’m just not impressed by brown. Everyone kinda just stands around on offense unless we are pushing the ball it’s just a bunch of floor pounding by Brunson or who ever gets the ball … honestly I haven’t seen one set play other then calling for a pick and roll.

Maybe we need a better coach and clearly a better defensive scheme.

I miss thibs im my eyes so far he was better then brown.

Other than the Greek you keep towns . He’s being used wrong in browns whatever you call it … system… free ball …

We look completely under prepared and under motivated…

Call thibs he’s still looking for a job

Dumping KAT immediately lowers the ceiling of the team. It’s reactionary and not the answer. He’s a very flawed player but we need to figure this out. Trading him for pennies on the dollar just isn’t smart.

Knicks will never win another game so they might as well.
Trades? Change is always improvement when you don't have specifics.
Any other coach, especially really young ones with no track record are the next big thing.

Hype raises expectations. The Emerites cup? We beat Toronto and orlando to make the final game. Not exactly the toughest road.
Granted, beating Spurs was a thing. A good thing, but did not cement our stature.
Blame Kat, Silver, and Mike Brown. Better than than face the truth.

The Knicks will not "dump" KAT

Any trade would have to bring immediate fit(s) that makes the roster able to contend or they won't make a trade.

What the FO believes would fit that criteria is hard to know though.

Obviously, Giannis would, but anything else is a question mark

Personally, I've never viewed KAT's contributions as anything but superfluous. He's the big man equivalent of what JR Smith was but with historically bad defensive instincts. The peaks can be impressive with them but the valleys are far more frequent and detrimental to the team. A player with that kind of profile has utility but the price-point has to be right. You can be fine if their contract is only about 10% of the cap, like JR was with us. If their salary represents almost a third of the cap, like KAT's does....you got problems.

I strongly believe that getting rid of KAT would be addition by subtraction. Maybe we can parlay whatever we get for him into a player more useful to us and our goals.

Knicks Get: I-Hart, DDV, Looney, Bey and a 2026 (or 2028) 1st round pick swap with the Bulls

Bulls Get: Towns, Yabusele and Dadiet

Mavs Get: Nikola Vucevic and a 2026 WAS 1st found pick

Thunder Get: Daniel Gafford and Klay Thompson

Wolves Get: Coby White, Jose Alvarado and Landry Shamet

Pelicans Get: Ayo Dosunmu and two 2nd round picks (via NYK)

Who says no?

I'm going to go take some shrooms and then come back and see if this makes sense.

Personally, I prefer at least a dozen teams involved in a deal, so perhaps you can cook up a little more complexity in the meantime

Swishfm3 @ 1/17/2026 11:27 PM
Giannis for KAT will never happen

If the Knicks actually move away from KAT, the only thing out there that would make sense (for us) would be KAT for domantas sabonis.
That's the trade to make.

fwk00 @ 1/18/2026 2:29 AM
I'm a big fan of getting Sabonis over here.

Solid, intelligent player.

I've never been a fan of Towns and don't think there's any current Knicks combinatorial that can make winning in the playoffs with him possible.
Way too much ADD.

Somebody also suggested trading for PHX's Grayson Allen and Brooks which sounds good to me but I have no idea how F'n trades take place anymore, it's a rat's nest of bullshit.

But to me Towns, Robinson, Yabusele, McBride, Dadiet, Hukporti, and a pick or two (assuming we're getting deep playoff talent back) can all fulfill their potential elsewhere.

Knixkik @ 1/18/2026 7:28 AM
Sabonis and Mike brown don’t get along I heard
Nalod @ 1/18/2026 9:28 AM
Jules>Kat>Sabonis.......... We can also find his faults and blame him too! Keep it going!
Why is he better than KAT?
nycericanguy @ 1/18/2026 9:41 AM
Sabonis is a much better passer, a better rebounder (especially offensive rebounds) and a higher IQ player. But maybe more importantly he's not a sourpuss out there. Not as good a shooter though.

if you can do KAT for Sabonis & Saric, it also saves us about $5m in salary this season and maybe more importantly about $19m NEXT season which would allow us to comfortably resign Mitch and stay below the 2nd apron.

So its definitely something to consider.

Especially if we could get KP in a buyout.

in fact, I think i just talked myself into it... outside of getting Giannis, Sabonis at just 29 years old would be the next best thing. His passing for a big man is off the charts and he's a great P&R player. and allows us to resign Mitch.

Keeping KAT might mean losing Mitch.

the money saved would also allow to comfortably use our 1st rounder this summer, maybe the WSH pick would have to go to SAC as incentive.

ramtour420 @ 1/18/2026 9:44 AM
I only have one question. Some of you might have guessed it already:( Does Sabonis box out?
Philc1 @ 1/18/2026 10:02 AM
If Silver has a brain in his head he forces a KAT/Deuce/future picks trade for Giannis. A Pistons/OKC NBA Finals will get worse ratings than CBS News
