I don’t get why everyone seem to believe Brunson did a favour to the Knicks by taking one less year on his previous contract and a couple of millions less (stop the BS about 100M).
He made a business decision to have a chance at earning way more money in his next extension. High risk, high reward. As simple as that.
And please, stop talking about « sacrifice » when you earn 100 million dollars to play ball. That is so disrepectful of all the hard-working people doing actual useful things.
I enjoy this Knicks era of basketball, but I really don’t like Jalen Brunson as a person. I hope we never sign him to a 80-mil contrat a year
Not sure how you can’t like Brunson as a person. He seems like a genuinely good guy. As far as the money, it’s all relative to the profession. We aren’t talking about regular jobs here. For the sake of basketball discussion only, he extended early which resulted in a major discount for the Knicks and the ability to have the roster they have below the second apron. If he waits a year, we don’t have the same flexibility. I get the whole idea that we are talking about basketball money here, but that’s what this forum is for. We aren’t talking about regular hard-working people earning regular salaries.
As far as his next contract, that remains to be seen. What does the salary cap look like and all of that ? We don’t know what his worth will be at that point.
I don't get this. What does my salary ( or any other hard-working person's salary) have to do with salaries for sportsmen? Or businessman? Or artists? What kind of an argument is this? You get paid for the job you do. No reason to feel upset because there are higher playing jobs out there.

Why do you think he only took a couple million less?
Brunson's max potential contract would have been if he opt'ed into the last year of his 2025-26 option year and then extending at a max level after that.
I just think your assumption is incorrect.
He definitely took a big paycut and gave us a big discount during his peak prime years and is bearing a ton of risk in hoping he will get the mega payday when he's past his prime instead.
And no, it's not disrespectful. Pornstars get paid a lot. Do I want to complain about that? No. Every person on this planet trades their time for money. Just because someone is getting paid more for their time does not mean anything to me. It's normal
Brunson has never had a payday requisite to his production here or in Dallas. And when he was at his peak, right in the middle of his prime, following a meteoric rise, he chose to take a paycut and allow OG to get a bigger contract than him.
Also, don't watch pro sports if their contracts make you uncomfortable. It is what it is. They get paid like the highest form of celebrities.

I haven't heard anything about a sacrifice. But if JB is willing to accept a contract that allows Leon to sign other players, thats the sign of a leader who understands the bigger picture. There are other NBA stars who rather take as much as they can (which is also fine), because once they are injured, those large contracts go out the window.
If JB is making 80mil, so is Brown, Towns and many other players who do not impact the team like JB does.
Curious why you do not like JB as a person, without sitting down with him and getting to know him off camera. Social media is just a gate keeper. Its a filter. So personally, I doubt anybody on this site knows him. I've met several NBA players in person. Sat and talked to them. And I still cant say I know them personally. Thats just me.
After watching him in the AS game 2 years in a row you can clearly see that while he is a star player he is not on the same level as ‘super star’ players. In that light I think his salary/contract is very reasonable.
Comparatively role players like Bridges and OG are clearly over paid and Towns who gets paid like a super star hasn’t really played like one or shown that he can be the difference maker. Brunsons contract is the last one that I’d complain about on this team.

That's more style of play than anything. Nikola Jokic doesn't sync with the NBA Jam style all star game either. Tim Duncan didn't as well. There are lots of great players who don't really shine with that kind of street ball / globe trotter game.

I don't get that. Because their forte is on the defensive end and are not stout offensive players?
Context: Perhaps he was asked a quesiton about the money. Not sure best look was to discusss it.
Media often says he took the discount of 113mil (left on the table) as if it was a great sacrifice and he did us a favor.
There is some partial truth but also he is not here just for the money. His pops is here, Uncle Thibs was here, his villinova boys are here, and knicks put in a great situation.
His worth? tough to ascertain and I won't worry about it until I need to.
Curious why FrenchKnicks does not like him.
Personally I like our dudes, and even KAT who has a joy about him when he is not whining about.
Jalen is a bit stoic and humor is dry.
Josh is obnoxious.
Mikal is a bit boisterous and it rubs some fans the wrong way.
OG is also rather Stoic.
I notice fans often state their displeasure at a player when they are not performing up to expectations and often its about the money. Money we don't pay.
Lower price guys like Duece are always loved because they are low contracts and when below normal performcne or injured they get a pass.
I mean, prior to Brunson we had one first round playoff exit in 9 years. Since Brunson in 3.5 seasons we have reached the 2nd round twice and reached the ECC just this past season. We are currently one of the contending teams for a chip out of the East.
Not sure why energy is getting put in this direction at the moment.

Allow me to clarify my "Amen".
I have no issue with JB, and in fact, I think his personality is exactly what is necessary to survive in NYC sports. He's calm and collected, doesn't get flustered by reporters asking inane questions, and goes about his business.
However the thought that he or any player on this team will earn $80M per year and this team could continue to function... I don't see how that happens, unless the salary cap doubles.

How about the concept of « society » then? Are we all happy that teachers, nurses, farmers earn low incomes, whereas bball players earn millions? I know how it all works, but that does not mean we should be proud of that. At least show some humility about it.
I know this is a political question, but in any case, when you earn millions of dollars to play ball, you shouldn’´t be talking about protecting your family or « sacrificing ».
Brunson’s latest interview is a disaster.

He made a business decision to earn more money over the duration of his career.
The discount was actually 3 or 4 mil, same as Bridges.
DLeethal wrote:Also, don't watch pro sports if their contracts make you uncomfortable. It is what it is. They get paid like the highest form of celebrities.
I am just reacting to what he is saying in his latest interview, not about the money he makes.
The 100 mil paycut stuff was basically PR spin. He is on a max contract. What he did was take the guaranteed money now rather than wait a year for a bigger contract. What people don't understand is this is covered when he becomes a free agent because he will have enough years in the league to get the big daddy contract. If he would have waited a year and signed for the bigger contract early he would have access to the big baddy contract a year later than he currently will be. So the extra money he will make from his early next contract covers the money he lost by signing a year early. This is basically cap tricks that pay Brunson the same money but also gives us cap space now.
