Knicks · Kevin McCullar out, Dalton Knecht signed to 2-way deal (page 2)

Nalod @ 10/23/2026 3:33 PM
JJ likley a tough one for Kinect/KXT/Knecht as he might see a bit of himself in him. A kid that came into the league and had to build his body to defend, cut, and basically get open. Once done JJ become a solid pro, and wealthy one at that! Perhaps JJ was a bit too tough on him for that reason?
Reports were Bronny is standing on his own fairly well. Lebron haters would love to see him fail, but the kid been showing up.

With Reaves coming back and perhaps some degree of Knehct not fulifilling his potential the quota of sharp shooting slowish white dude back court player is full. Other factors could be his agent needs to get him out of there to a situation were he could get an opportunity.

Kevin McCullars is a good kid. At 6-5 and fairly athletic he was likley both a 2 and 3. I never saw him as a Josh Hart type of player. He is not soft, but not that kind of Dog as is Josh. He is a thick kid who can defend the 2, 3 or 4. Not Kevin.

Is it a good sign for Dadiet? Perhaps he is ascending in the pecking order? Or getting ready to be included in a trade.
What about Deuce? This a prelude to a trade for him?

Nickel's defense in SL was better than expected, so perhaps he will have an edge over Knecht

The third-year man can still impact the Knicks. He’s just 25 years old and is an above-average shooter with size. In his final year in college, he averaged 21.7PPG on 45.8% shooting from the field and 39.7% shooting from three. It’s not every day you can find that kind of shooting at his height on the waiver wire. But there are plenty of reasons why he saw his minutes dwindle and why he eventually was waived.

Despite being 6’6”, Knecht isn’t much of a defender. He can get lost defensively, and even if he manages to be in the right spots at the right times, he just does not possess the athleticism to be much of a factor on that end. Offensively, he’s shown flashes of being able to utilize his shot to get to other spots on the floor. When a part of the rotation, he was making nice reads off the ball and routinely had nice timely cuts to get easy looks at the rim. But at the end of the day, he’s still best utilized as a spot-up shooter and only a spot-up shooter. He can’t create for himself due to a lack of a reliable handle and certainly doesn’t create for others.

We could definitely use both. Odds are both won’t pan out, but if they do, it could be a Merrill/ Strus combo.

Wonder when the deal was actually reached. Glad McCullar got to be around for ring night. I'm choosing to believe that was intentional.

Why? What did he do to deserve that ring? I think I've done more for the Knicks than he has. Certainly, Spike deserves it more.

Knecht was released just before the 5pm Monday deadline and you need 48 hours to clear waiver, so that’s Wednesday. Knicks played Tuesday.

I think he might just go through extended periods of stupid. There are a few clips of JJ just yelling at him for low Bball IQ moments.

This is I thought - we basically have a build a replacement for Deuce erector set with our 2 way guards.

Even Spike has competition as the number one super fan.

Are there two Elfrid Payton’s because they can’t mean the scrub one who once wore a Knicks uniform? I guess they want a vet to help the kids

Elfrid?

Elfid Payton?

this has to be one of those old Monty Python animations with a balloon figure stomping through a wasteland squawking "Elfrid! Elfrid?"

He was getting a ring regardless. I'm just glad they he got to be part of the celebration as opposed to getting waived immediately before?

I liked McCullar and thought he could develop into a rotation player. His bad luck is we have no available slots for him and his 3pt shot is only so-so. I thought Knecht was on his way to being a star after seeing him play his rookie year, but, after researching the issue, he fell out of the rotation with the Lakers because he was terrible on defense and was messing up plays on offense. Perhaps that was youth and just a lack of focus. If he can get his head on straight and commit to the details of the game, he has chance to be a real good player because he has a solid offensive game. That being said, I like Tyler Nichols and think he has a chance to be good too (and probably a much better defensive player). So Nichols and Knecht will battle it out to see who can become that 3pt specialist off the bench at SF.

This was a good club for McCullar in the sense of being given time to rehab out of college

It was also a bad club for him opportunity wise

He should be able to find his way into another system somewhere and be a solid contributor

He will he’s basically a Hart clone. Like you guys said the opportunity for minutes just wasn’t there for him here and Rose likes this Knecht guy

NYKBocker @ 10/24/2026 8:28 PM
Not sure if intentional but if it them it is a classy move. Knicks front office waiting after the ring ceremony before making the move so McCular can get his ring with his team.

I keep seeing this Hart- clone thing, which I don’t get. The things that make Hart great, McCullar does not do those things at all. I viewed McCullar more in the range of the Martin twins. And the Martin twins were good at their best. They did just enough things well as wings to break into rotations in the right situation. But both showed some shooting flashes that McCullar hasn’t gotten to. But Hart is a different breed. Elite rebounder, playmaker and fast break igniter. McCullar isn’t those things.
