Geez Louis rice and peas.

Right now I am predicting that A-rod carries the team with a huge RBI game and then ching ming Wang closes out the series in the Bronx!

Possitive energy!

Would you go with Wang on 3 days rest (followed by Moose in game 5) or Wright?
Nalod @ 10/7/2006 9:04 AM
Wright on a short leash. If he does not have the "Wright" stuff, pull him!

yanks can score runs.

Detroit is pitching great. Yanks are not Losing, they are geting outplayed!
tkf @ 10/7/2006 9:10 AM
detroit played above their heads these past two games. Jaret wright has pitched in games bigger than this before, If he is on, he can go 6 innings of great pitching... I also predict A-rod will have a big day. All we need to do is get it back to NY, we know wang does not give up a lot of runs and we will score some runs....
fishmike @ 10/7/2006 11:38 AM
I love the Yanks but they have been going backwards for a couple years now regarding philosophy. We always used to beat the teams with the stud hitters because we had better pitching. Those great Texas, A's line ups were always shut down by better pitching. Now our great line ups are shut down by better pitching.

Its time to trade ARod.. and not because he's not clutch, but because we can get Ervin Santana and Scott Shields back.
As much as I love Matsui if I can trade him to the M's for Rafael Soriano and JJ Putz I do.
Dont pick up Sheff's option and use that $$$ you free up to overpay ($12mm a year) for Zito.

You go into next year with Ervin Santana, Wang, Zito, Big Vagina and Wright as your starting 5. Maybe Pavano actually pitches.. not holding my breath. Your pen is Sheilds, Putz, Soriano, Proctor, Bruney and Mariano.
Plus you have one of th best pitching prospects in baseball in the queue for the following year. Pitching pitching pitching

Arod has a no trade contract. Hes going NO where unless he wants to. Zito has boras as his agent. 12 mil $ per? How about $15-17 mil per. Also Matsui isnt going anywhere because do u know how much the yanks make on Japanese revenue? a ton. You think its so simple. How do you know santanas going to pitch better than mussina? The difference in these yanks are clutch players. No oneil, brosius, martinez. Guys we have now have better reg season stats but come the playoffs they suck. I rather have brosius over arod any playoff game.

I agree; A-Rod's already said he would veto trades. The team has no clutch players other than Jeter. Mussina's still a very good pitcher that you need to keep. If they Yankees can afford $30 or $40 mil on getting their 10th all-star hitter in Abreu, they surely can afford whatever Zito will cost, though. I don't know if Randy will pitch next year and at this rate of detorioration, I think I'd be afraid to pitch him anyway.
fishmike @ 10/7/2006 12:36 PM
let me tell you something.. if the Yanks offer ARod a chance to go to Anahiem HE WILL GO, unless you havent followed his career in NY. If you think he's happy here your NUTS.

Its fresh start for him and a good fit, more laid back, he will hit between Vlad and Anderson, it makes a lot of sense. If the Yanks dont explore those options they are stupid.

Also, NOBODY is giving Zito more that $12mm a year. You look at the recent contracts for pitchers. $17mm? Not a chance. Is Zito going to make more than Oswalt? Dont think so.

Mussina is good but he's now 7-8 career in the postseason. He pitches OK, which is usually OK enough to lose.

I have no problem with Matsui, like I said I like him, so if he stays use Melky to bolster the bullpen. I just think Melky has more upside than Matsui at 21. He's already a MUCH better outfielder and has better speed as well.

I'm thinking pitching + defense first first and first.

Its NEVER easy, but it is doable.

I would even explore trading some of the young arms (NOT HUGHES) along with Melky AND Cano for Carlos Zambrano. It would be very hard to part with those guys but I think a .340 hitting 2nd baseman w/ power, some young arms and a good outfielder w/ Melky's skills at 21 might get them to bite.

That gives us the BEST 1-2 punch in MLB at the top of the staff... YES, Zambrano/Wang are better than Santana/Liriano (healthy) IMO

THATS how you win titles

You're still ignoring the financial reasons to keep Matsui. I agree that it's worth exploring an A-Rod trade, but he's said he'd veto it and I think he actually feels he needs to stay here to prove his worth to the Yankees.

agreed about the philosophy change. It used to be fun to root for the yanks because our lineup always seemed non-star studded and we had the likes of david cone and wells and pettite and rivera just shutting people down. We need lefties, we need to trim the power hitters from the lineup and get more contact hitters like a sean casey. for that reason, I'd like to keep melky and cano around, they're great contact hitters whose power is just a side effect.

I think Zito is a lock to come to the Bronx, and I don't know if he's the answer. But it would be nice to get a lefty on the staff again. Arod needs to go. I hope he asks for a trade. how many years does he want to embarass himself in the post-season? it's never going to change.
nyk4ever @ 10/7/2006 1:15 PM
I'm not sold on Zito. I know he's pitched magnificently well for the A's and has a Cy Young in his pocket, but he's a california guy who doesnt like a ton of spotlight. He's pitched well pitching against the Yankees in the playoffs but I'm not sold on how well he'd pitch in a Yankee uniform, in Yankee stadium with a We-Better-Win-This-Game edict. Also, if you think Mike Mussina is quirky and demanding, wait till Zito comes to town.

Zito is going to get 16M per for 5-6 years and he's not even an ace. I'll pass. Sign Matsuzaka from Japan.

from who? Mets are locked in, that leaves the A's and Yanks. Who's paying him that?

I agree. Zito is getting, at most, $13MM a year. This is a pitcher whose WHIP was hovering around 1.40 all year. He's a lefty, yes, and a pretty good one, second tier ace, but nobody is paying him $16MM a year, let's get real. I agree with Fish's strategy, though I think trading A-Rod will be a battle. We might have to keep A-Rod, trade Matsui to sure up the bullpen and make room for Melky, and let Sheff and/or Moose go, as long as we can replace Moose with Zito and another starter and replace Sheff with another cheaper right handed bat.
tkf @ 10/7/2006 2:25 PM
good post fish. If you look at this season, guys like melky, and phillips and guile were not stars but they were opportunistic, they made things happened and made plays when they were needed. and when you have bats in your lineup, like jeter, damon, giambi, and now abreu, you don't need A-rod and sheff, you need guys who cause havoc on the bases, who get on base and move bases, move runners and set thigns up for abreu(who is a hell of a hitter) and matusi and giambi...

As far as pitching pairing a zito or zambrano up with wang would give us a hell of a one/two punch. when we won titles we always had that guy we knew for sure would get a win. Big time pitcher. In 96, we had guys like jimmy key and cone, who were big game pitchers. In 98 we had Wells, and Duque and pettite... in 99 and 2000 we had clemens and pettite, those guys would not lose back to back. we don't have that now, we have wang and a bunch of Question marks.... Imagine if we had clemens today. you could put the ball in his hands and you would know you had a great chance of him shutting the other team down...

I agree, even if we win it all this year, time to explore trading A-rod to the angels for that package... end of story!!!!

Boston, maybe. I've heard a lot about the Mets or Boston going for him. I mean, if the Mets don't win it all this year, you have to think they'll make one last big push before this nucleus gets too old...
