Should we go after Manny? He's not made it clear that he wants to stay in L.A.
he'll go where the money is, belee dat.
It's one of those moments that I wished we didn't pick up A-Rod's contract.
But having both on the team would be tremendous. I wonder if we could include Giambi in a trade with L.A., along with a few others, if we dangled enough money out there for Manny's interest? I can't believe I'm inviting it, but Manny sure looked like the clutch hitter we been needing.

hank says joba will be a starter next season.
so guarantees next year are wang and joba. and pettitte wants to come back. so that makes 3 starters, 2 spots open.
I think Joba is ready to start and this time 'get results in the W-L column'.
Wang and Joba are a no brainer, glad to hear Pettitte will return and now if we can get the Moose Man back on board and pick up a gem of a starting arm, and improve the bullpen to higher levels, then we should be okay.
I think we need another big bat in there to.
Sounds like Peavy definitely isn't happening..
A person familiar with the talks told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the Braves and Padres have discussed a Jake Peavy trade.
Dicussions supposedly involve at least three Braves prospects. The Padres would have to get either Jordan Schafer or Jason Heyward in a Peavy deal. They might also have interest in major leaguers Yunel Escobar, Kelly Johnson and Jair Jurrjens.
not a big fan of peavy...

I'm not the biggest fan of Peavy either, but I do think that he had a chance to be our version of Josh Beckett. Now believe me, I know Beckett had success in the postseason before joining the sox, but Peavy has 'stuff' that is just as nasty if not more than Beckett has. I think it would be a risk well worth looking into.

i dunno but IMHO an offer of Cano, Hughes & another prospect trumps that package.
I would think you're right TMS, but I don't think Peavy wants to goto the AL.

No one knows how Joba will hold up. He's given a total of 12 mlb career starts. No one knows how Andy will hold up either. I wouldn't exactly say "that makes 3 starters." Maybe it potentially makes 3 starters but potentially could be only 1 1/2 - 2 starters. If Joba and Pettitte are gonna be 40% of our starting rotation, we better have a very good 6th starter/long reliever like Ramiro Mendoza was. We need good 4th and 5th starters first though!

i think joba will be the 5th starter so he can be skipped from time to time to keep his innings down. don't forget that phil coke was a darn good minor league starter too, but he looks so damn dominating in the pen that i would be reluctant to move him.
aceves = ramiro mendoza.
The Newark Star Ledger reports that the Yankees and Padres "have had preliminary discussions" about a Jake Peavy trade.
Peavy has said that he'd prefer to remain in the NL, but his agent indicated that he'd accept a league change to certain AL teams. Expect to hear just about every mid- and high-payroll team in baseball linked to Peavy once the offseason gets underway.
what will it take for peavy? hughes, cano, and somebody else? more?

Man, I totally forgot about Mendoza. Great call there. Yeah, he was a great set up man.

Yet, he'd probably have been our #2 starter this year (after Moose)
Wang was the difference of making it to a playoff spot. We were only 6 games behind bastan-bastards and he missed almost half a season. Hell, we were only 8 behind Tampa Bay and if it had been much closer, then I think the Yankees would have made a much bigger effort to grab a spot.

We could have reasonably expected about 11 more wins out of Wang and about 11 fewer out of Mussina. (He had 11 wins the prior year and was headed downhill rapidly).
Now, if Mussina does retire, Wang's gonna have to win 20 just for there to be no net loss.

It is greatly important that both teams start off good in their new stadiums. They must' make the playoffs, if anything else.
I think the Yankees will address the pitching situation this off season. And if either can find any gems in the farm system, that would be even better.

The Yankees are considerably below Boston and TB now and Moose retires then the Yankees have a huge amount of work to do this off-season. They need several big FA acquisitions and trades. We could just as easily be fighting with Toronto to avoid fourth place for years to come. I was more optimistic before Cashman got his latest extension.
