I'm not sure what I think of Dunn. His power from the leftside would be really nice though. Ryan Howard hits tons of homeruns but strikes out a lot, would you not want him too? The thing about Dunn that has me on the fence is his OBP and his ability to draw walks at a very high rate.

Dunn's defense is far from solid but we dealt with Giambi at 1st all these year, although Giambi has decent hands. Plus in 2010, the DH spot would be all his with Damon and Matsui's contracts up.

I wonder what kind of contract Dunn is looking for.

to be honest, assuming the amount of cash it would take to get that guy to sign w/the Yankees when he turns FA, no i wouldn't... if we're gonna spend the big bucks, do it for a guy like Mark Tex... he's got everything u want in a 1B & fits the bill offensively & defensively... if u can't spend the cash it'll take to get him then stock up on pitching & sign a stopgap guy like i mentioned... i wouldn't break the bank on high strikeout low BA guys like Dunn.

So I dunno about you, but if I had to choose between Sabathia and Tex/Manny I would take Tex and Manny.

I mention it because of this excerpt from Jon Heyman:

Manny won't accept Dodgers' arbitration offer

LAS VEGAS -- This is no shocker. But Manny Ramirez will reject the Dodgers' offer of arbitration by tonight's midnight deadline.

There was some media speculation Ramirez might accept. However, that never made much sense since he's already rejected the Dodgers' two-year offer for $45 million, which represents about $20 million more than he'd get through arbitration on a one-year basis.

He seeks a deal for at least five years, and while that seems like a tall order for the 36-year-old star, even after hitting .396 with 17 home runs and 53 RBIs in 53 games in Los Angeles, four years could be a possibility.

The Dodgers, who have multiple infield needs (shortstop and third base) and could use a starting pitcher as well, remain interested in Ramirez and can resume negotiating with him if they choose to do so.

He is also a strong fallback option for two teams that are pursuing star free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira -- the Angels and Yankees. As a matter of fact, if the Yankees aren't able to convince CC Sabathia to come to New York, the Yankees may pursue both Ramirez and Teixeira.

i think the question is more like would u rather have Sabathia/Manny or Tex/Lowe cuz Tex is gonna command the most out of all those guys.
VDesai @ 12/7/2008 10:10 PM
Tex is gonna cost more than CC? If so, no thanks....

last reports i read had Boras wanting at least $25 mil per over 10 years for Tex.

He's a good player, but he's not one of the 10 best offensive players in the league. I don't want him for that money...

honestly i don't see how he can reasonably expect teams to pay that amount w/this economic crisis we're in... he also expected a 10 year $200 mil contract for Beltran when he turned FA & he didn't get nearly that much... i think Tex is going to have to settle for something in the 8 year $22 mil per range, which even tho is still a ton of money, is a lot more palateable... at a gross value of $176 mil, that would still net him the biggest FA contract this year of any potential FA, so that should appease Scott Boras.
VDesai @ 12/7/2008 10:21 PM
I think Manny could very outperform Tex on an offensive numbers basis over the next 3 years....I would definitely try to lock up Manny and see if I could trade Matsui and/or Damon for some pitching help.

The Reds apparently just traded Homer freaking Bailey for Jermaine Dye. Dye had a great year last year, but he's old. Bailey was once considered the top pitching prospect (or top 2-3) in the game.

wow... Jermaine Dye's a guy i wanted the Yanks to look into but not for a top pitching prospect... that's a hefty pricetag for an aging vet to be sure.

dunno if the Yanks will invest the 5 years into Manny he's looking for or even a 4th at his age... if he'll accept a 3 year deal i think the Yanks should absolutely be in on that action... he would definitely put up monster #'s & be a perfect hitter to protect ARod in the lineup... don't think Matsui's all that tradeable coming off major knee surgery... at least not until the trade deadline to give teams a chance to see how he's playing early in the season on that newly constructed knee... Damon might be a trade commodity tho, but we don't really have any viable leadoff hitters on this team... Gardner doesn't get on base at a good enough clip to consider as a fulltime leadoff guy & Jeter is best utilized as a #2 hitter... i think i would hold onto Damon unless some very good trade options opened up for him, which i don't really see happening.
VDesai @ 12/7/2008 11:13 PM
Hmm...it was reported in a bunch of Cincy papers, but now the Reds say that there isn't a deal...

how about Jermaine Dye if we miss out on Tex & Manny? the guy is still putting up some impressive #'s at his age (.292 / 34 / 96 / .885 OPS) & still has a cannon for an arm in RF... would give us some nice pop from the right side to backup ARod, that's for sure... the White Sox are reportedly looking to shed his contract... maybe an offer of Kennedy & Melky could get er done?

if he's still available i would offer up Melky & Ian Kennedy for J Dye & see if the White Sox are desperate enough to unload his contract... if they can get a deal done w/Cincy all power to them... Dye would be a nice fit on this roster tho IMO... a perfect stopgap until Austin Jackson is ready to hit the main stage.

Apparently the Sox are holding out for more prospects for Dye than just Homer Bailey....it doesn't seem likely we could get him at that sort of cost.
TMS @ 12/7/2008 11:24 PM
ouch... fuggetabodit then... next target.
TMS @ 12/7/2008 11:27 PM
at this point i'm almost at the point where bringing Bobby A back would be our best bet like Finest has been saying all along... if we can't land Manny or Tex, we cannot afford to lose Bobby A's offensive production... i'm sorry but Xavier Nady in RF is not the answer unless we upgrade our offense by bringing Tex to NY, especially since u're also likely looking at a weak hitting starting CF tandem of Melky & Gardner.
VDesai @ 12/7/2008 11:35 PM
Didn't they decline arb on Abreu though?
TMS @ 12/7/2008 11:39 PM
yeah they did but they can still work out a contract extension in free agency if they wish... they didn't wanna shell out the $16 mil that Abreu was likely to win in arbitration & risk him accepting it... if he's amenable to a 3 year extension at a lower dollar amount, say around $11 mil or so, i think the Yanks would be all over it... i think that's what Cashman is actually hoping for right now, otherwise they would be going after Manny harder.

Yeah but I figure if they had any interest in bringing him back they would at least offer arb, as they would've gotten some first round picks back for him. I mean if they are willing to give him 3/33, they probably should've been willing to accept the risk of 1 yr at 16 in exchange for the potential of him signing else where and us getting picks, don't you think? My guess is they have no intention of bringing him back.
TMS @ 12/8/2008 12:27 AM
i think it all depends on how the offseason pursuit of the other bignames go this year... if we lose out on every bigname then i think Cashman will look to bring Abreu back at a lower annual rate... i don't think it's the overall monetary value that scared the Yankees off so much as it was trying to control this year's payroll expenditures... offering Abreu arbitration would risk him accepting it & adding another $16-17 mil to the annual payroll figure which would hamper their ability to go after any of the other bignames on the market... if those names are no longer available then Bobby A becomes a high priority to re-sign if they can get him at a discount.
VDesai @ 12/8/2008 12:31 AM
Rather than Abreu, how about Milton Bradley? He just declined arbitration so he will be free. He was one of the best hitters in the AL last year and is much younger...
