he was arbitration eligible, not a free agent.
the tex drama unfolds as the day progresses:
1:32pm: Heyman now has the Yanks in "deep discussions" with Tex; he says they've stepped up their efforts in recent hours.
1:02pm: Jon Heyman says the Yankees are still in it - they're "talking seriously with Teixeira's people." He agrees that a decision could be made as soon as this afternoon.
12:42pm: Danny Knobler believes it's down to the Nationals and Red Sox. His sources say Teixeira hasn't decided yet but is expected to make up his mind today.
12:08pm: Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe has the Nationals at nine years, $180MM and the Red Sox at eight years and around $170MM.
10:55am: Chico Harlan of the Washington Post talked to a Nationals spokesman who is not aware of any plans for an announcement today regarding Teixeira. WEEI's Alex Speier notes that it is not a lock that Teixeira signs by Christmas.
10:28am: Buster Olney and Peter Gammons say Teixeira's decision is "seemingly imminent." The journalists say the Orioles' negotiations for Tex "appear dormant." They suggest the Yankees are lurking in case Boras offers Teixeira to them at a discount (or perhaps just to drive up the price for Boston).
10:20am: According to Thom Loverro of the Washington Times, "there will be an announcement today regarding the future of free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira." Loverro says there are strong indications the Red Sox will be the victor, though it's unclear whether those indications are based on inside information.
We learned from Roch Kubatko yesterday evening that the Nationals upped their bid to $178-184MM over eight years (Jim Williams says $178-183MM).

what a coup! we got our big bopper to back up ARod & our pitching rotation is rebuilt.
Steve Berthiaume on ESPN exasperated at the money the Yankees have spent just like i knew they would... can't wait to hear Karl Ravech & John Kruk crying about this later on Baseball Tonight.
don't worry Boston fans, Manny's still out there.
Amazing offseason for the Yankees. They enter the offseason in big need of pitching, with many players going away and with the objective of improving their team for the first game at the New Yankee Stadium.
Cashman and the rest of the Yankees have played this offseason to perfection. They sign top pitcher C.C. Sebathia to be the ace they've lacked for so long. They then move forward and get the second best pitcher available, A.J. Burnett.
But the offense still was lacking, especially with Abreu gone. They keep monitoring the Texeira situation but don't get too much into it so Boras can't use them to drive up his price. Orioles show interest. Angels make an offer. Nats too. The Red Sox make a strong offer but still not what was first expected, of over 200 millions. The Red Sox dare Boras to show them a better offer than theirs. The Angels pull out. Nats try one last time.
And the Yankees get into it and sign the top position player in the free agent market. One they really needed.
Now the team is not only loaded, but deep enough to give guys like Hughes, Kennedy and other prospects enough time to develop and come stronger in 2010 or later.
Great job, Cash!

you know, if we could re-sign abreu for something like 2 years $20 mil (which i highly doubt), he would be a GREAT #5/6 hitter.
Abreu's looking for a 3 year deal & i don't think the Yankees ever intended on signing him regardless... his defensive skills have been declining drastically over the past couple years & their OF situation is glutted enough as it is... the only way i could see Bobby A coming back is if they start shopping Nady, but i don't see that as a likely option w/Austin Jackson slated to join this team in a year or 2.

wow!
I think they may still sign Manny and maybe make a blockbuster trade involving Swisher and Prospects and maybe even move Matsui. I think they will still tweak the offense as much as possible, though they could very easily stand pat right now.
to hell w/the rest of baseball... go sign Brian Fuentes as our 8th inning setup guy & trade Nady & Marte for prospects
The Yankeee hate that's flying around is so ridiculous it's funny. It's basically the same talking points as always when the Yankees sign a player but there's 2 points that none of the haters mention:
1) The Yankees dropped $88 million off their payroll after last season
2) The Yankees payroll is still $20 million lower than what it was last season even after signing Texeira, Sabathia and Burnett.
I don't give any credence to anything written or said about the Yankees offseason unless those things are mentioned. It's basic information that anyone with half a clue would know and is purposely left out to promulgate the hysteria that the Yankees are ruining baseball. I won't even get into how much money every team in baseball makes, directly and indirectly, from the Yankees.
Why exactly can't the Yankees replace Giambi with Texeira, Mussina and Pavano with Sabathia and Abreu with Burnett? The same people who had no problem with the Yankees payroll last season when they finished 3rd in their division are the same morons who have a problem with it this offseason even though their payroll is currently subtantially lower. The hate is ridiculous.
