i dunno, many felt the same way about Bernie too over the years... that he was nonchalant, lacked any personality or passion for the game... but through time he proved that he was just as intense a competitor as anyone else on this team, he just wasn't as demonstrative about it... i think another guy is Matsui who gives off that same type of impression but i know during postseason play the guy has come through before in huge spots & even tho he's struggled in the more recent playoff series, i think both Matsui & Cano should be held onto this season... i like O Dawg's defense & he's a solid switch hitter but he doesn't have Cano's upside, plus he's 5 years older... defensively they're pretty much identical in terms of fielding percentage over their careers & i really like how Cano turns the DP w/that quick arm flick of his.
if we're gonna trade Cano as part of any package i really hope we get a guy like Grienke, Billingsley, Peavy, etc.... we can't give up a talent like that w/o getting back premium value or potential.
I don't think anybody ever questioned Bernie. He was like the go to guy if there is such a thing in baseball. When the post season came he was like Mike Jordan. He came through on defense, on the bases and at the plate. He was the man in the clubhouse too and in interviews.....he was the man and he always was and will be. I wouldn't describe him as non-chalant at all...he was a firey player.
Matsui has always came in the clutch as well. He's just been hurt. I think every yankee fan respect Matsui.
Anyway, i just don't like Cano at all. Just like i never liked Abreu. Arod is the same way you know?....just that deer in the headlights look. Like they are just on cruise and that all they will be. if they fail or lose its all the same shit to them. Jeter plays that non-chalant roll in the media, but he is a ball out player all around just like Bernie. The problem with the Yankees the last 8 years is they haven't had a Chuck Knoblock(totally killed his name), a Boggs, Paul o'neil, David Cone, Brosius, dave justice, Bernie, Giradi, tino....and just about every player they had....all those guys were emotional and just flat out played the game like warriors. Abreu, Giambi, Cano, Melky, Arod....thats too many dudes that just simply go out and swing a bat and oh well thats it sorry better luck next time. totally killing the team and any momentum instantly.
Speaking of Bernie, you hear he still wants to play and is gonna try out for the Puerto Rican team? pretty awesome.
TMS @ 12/25/2008 4:00 AM
when Bernie first came up he was so shy & unassuming people were doubting whether he would ever live up to his potential... then all of a sudden he lost those dorky ass glasses & started to ball bigtime... it's a damn good thing we didn't end up trading him for Albert Belle back in '98 otherwise we may never have won those championships in '99 & '00.
so Bernie's trying out for the PR team, & ARod's playing for the DR, & Jeter's on the US team w/Pedroia... i hear the Muts are trying to convince Johan not to play for Venezuela... i don't blame them i guess... can't have their $150 dollar man getting injured throwing pitches in a meaningless exhibition tournament.
& i hear ya on Cano, he does seem to coast a lot, & that annoys me... he just has so much raw talent tho that i have a hard time letting go of him unless we're getting back something awesome.
& bro, i been saying it just like u just did for a long ass time... this team has lacked any dawgs for the longest... no Paul O'Neils, no Tino Martinez's, no Jim Leyritz'... man Mike Lowell woulda been a perfect fit in that type of leadership role, nah'm sayin? too bad he had to play for the stinkin' Red Sux... for a while there Gary Sheffield sorta took on that tough guy mantle & no one would mess w/him when he was on this team, remember? we damn near beat up on BOS in 4 straight w/him on the team in '04 & ARod was ballin' back then up to that point in the postseason... then all of a sudden it's like someone came & replaced his ballsack w/beef curtains & he stunk in the playoffs ever since... same thing w/Matsui... he's been struggling bigtime in the playoffs the past couple years bro... he was pretty much an automatic out in the most recent ALDS vs. the Angels & wasn't much better vs. Detroit the following season if i recall... maybe him & ARod had their transplant surgeries at the same time.
i know ARod looked up to Sheff bigtime & considered him like a big brother figure... ever since Sheff left it's like ARod has been struggling to find someone to latch onto that could make him feel comfortable on this team... i dunno what happened a couple years ago when ARod went crazy w/that unbelievable season but he needs to regain some of that mojo... hopefully Mark Tex being here to have his back will help him relax more & put up the numbers we all know he's capable of.

Here are my thoughts on what's going on in Yankee land (Cashman-land). I have said we will get Tex and I said we will get Manny and I said Pettitte will be back.
Well, I was reading the article in the Post about the top 10 reasons why they signed Tex and it made sense for the first time as to what Cashmen and the Boss Brothers are doing.
They are trying to get younger, which is what they are doing, picking up switch hitters (which is what we used to win those championships with) and trying to get versatile players on this team, to make us much more defensive strong and to be able to do other things. Remember, it's the little things that win games. I can see it now and I can see the talk about moving Matsui in a trade scenario also, because he is one of the worse defensive outfielders out there.
I made the bold comment about Manny coming to NY (and it's still possible) and who wouldn't want a bat like that in their line-up? As for Pettitte, there is talk of him not coming to NY now, which makes no sense to me at all. First of all, he will not even get the 10 million the Yankees are offering him form anyone else and why wouldn't he want to come back, seeing that the Yankees have just put themselves back on the map.
Sure we signed well over 400 million dollars worth of contracts, but look who we picked up? The Boss Brothers have good vision. They know that if your going to invest, then INVEST! Make it worth it! We are (at this point) playoff bound again and a threat to take it deep. I like what the Boss Brothers are doing and the vision Cashman is implementing for Giardi. Just one thing though. They're saying Tex is a legit 3rd hitter. I still say no matter who they got to support A-Rod, put them behind A-Rod and A-Rod will have a huge offensive season.
I like the fundamental type players the Brass has been putting together. We're not just signing big name players, with over priced contracts. We're actually assembling talent on this team again. Fundamental talent and that's what we had when we brought in four more championship several years ago. This is good for the Yankees and good for baseball.
And a word on high priced players, etc., When baseball was crying about how the Yankees were 'buying' championships and they said they could not compete in money? Well that turned into a lie, because suddenly baseball started signing big contracts themselves soon after and the other thing too, when we won those championships, we did it with a combination of our own farm system, along with players that did not carry a big name like O'Neal, Raines and the farm like Bernie, Jeets, Mo and many others. So didn't we create ou own team that would eventually win those championships, instead of buy them?? We did it back in the 50's, 40's, 30's and even the 20's, even though we got the Babe!
We got A-Rod and everyone cried, but they didn't make the big deal about how Texas gave him a huge contract, before the Yankees picked the rest up, did they? No not Texas. It's one of those teams that complained about how the Yankees were ruining baseball before they opened up their books.
So who says we're buying them?? We're merely paying to be competitive. That's all it ever was. And if we didn't do it, then someone else would and we'd be left behind. I never hear the same arguments about the Celtics, Montreal Canadians or teams like the Steelers, Cowboys or 49'rs buying all of those championships, did any of you? I didn't hear the same arguments when michael jordan and co. were going through the Knicks four times, to win 6 championships overall, did any of you? The truth will come out again. MLB will up the money, because they have it. For you youngens who don't follow much baseball history: 'George Stienbrenner did not start this money market'! A guy by the name of Charlie O'Finley did! He used to own the A's and he's the one who started the high priced contracts with Vida Blue, Catfish Hunter and Reggie Jackson. George just perfected it, by taking it to knew heights. You think guys like Ruth and Ted Williams would have turned down money like this? No way! Remember that!
And don't we pay' a part of MLB taxes? Do I feel guilty about the Yankees? NEVER!! Screws all of those jealous MOFO's who wish they had what we had. If they can't figure out that this is the way it is, then that's why they have been sitting in the cellar all these years. This is why a team like the scrubs haven't won in over one hundred years. And some markets simply do not belong in this market, not unless if they only want to bring baseball to their area (KC, Florida, Colorado, etc.). So don't blame the Yankees, because if anyone does, then that means NYC is guilty for being one of the biggest markets in the world and that's taking it to knew territory.

Do not hold your breath if you are expecting the Yankees to feel apologetic about all the money they are spending. After the team’s third major off-season signing, the Yankees’ president, Randy Levine, surveyed the criticism of the club and said, in effect, that a really good Yankee team is beneficial to baseball.
“The philosophy of George Steinbrenner, which has been continued by Hal and Hank, is that the Yankees are a sacred trust to their fans and they believe in continually reinvesting in the team rather than reinvesting in themselves,” Levine said Wednesday in reference to the team’s principal owner and his two sons. “We follow all the rules of baseball, we pay millions of dollars to other teams and we are essential to the revenues generated by Major League Baseball and its networks and other entities.”
In signing C. C. Sabathia and A. J. Burnett to big free-agent contracts and reaching agreement with Mark Teixeira on an eight-year, $180 million deal, the Yankees have now spent far more money this off-season than the other 29 major league teams combined. For those keeping score, it is $423.5 million to $296.6 million. That kind of discrepancy is too much for some commentators and for the Milwaukee Brewers’ owner, Mark Attanasio, who on Tuesday resurrected the idea of a salary cap as a way of reining in the Yankees.
Levine will have none of it. He said that the Yankees, by spending substantially on players, were making sure they remained a top asset in the sport.
“We are usually in the top of road attendance and we get some of the highest television ratings, both when we play national games and when we visit other teams,” he said. He said if the Yankees’ new stadium, which will be ready for the 2009 season, allows the team’s revenue to increase, then “so will the revenues of the rest of the game.”
Levine added: “We are sensitive to the economic times and our fans. We believe it is good for the franchise and good for the fans to put the best product possible on the field, and that is what we strive to do.”
Levine singled out the criticism that he said some ESPN’s commentators had directed at Yankee spending and said he wondered why they were not criticizing their own network for reinvesting in its product by outbidding Fox by millions of dollars to acquire the rights to the Bowl Championship Series.
No apologies, and a little feistiness. And less than two months until spring training.

I said this in the other thread but I have to say it hear too:
It is crazy thinking by these yankees haters out there. How many ballclubs actually pool all their revenues and dispurse it back to win games for the franchise. Is it pure jealously by yankee haters 'cause their teams don't pull all their allocated resources back into the ball club? Any fan would love their team to invest in ball players to help them win.
All these Yankee haters saying "the yankees buy their world championships" B.S. Just because the yankees sign free agents left and right doesn't mean that we bought the WS. Good example is the 2yrs that the marlins won the world series and the last world series as tampa bay could've won it all. The Marlins last year had a team payroll of like 20 million.
I am sick and tired of these Yankee haters. Stop worry about the Yanks and worry why in hell your team can't win it all half the time as the Yankees. And also ask yourself the luxury tax where the hell does it go for the other teams

I'm a Yankee fan who watches nearly all the games but I'll freely admit that we *try* to buy championships. It's the league's fault (not the Yankees') for having that kind of system in place but fans look like they have their heads in the sand when they won't admit what we (and to a slightly lesser extent, the Mets and Red Sox) are doing. We certainly weren't trying to buy another 3rd place finish with the $423 mil spent this off-season! What exactly besides a championship were we trying to buy? Whether we'll succeed is a separate story. This is the only sport with this degree of payroll inequity. It sucks for fans outside of NY and Boston. That's not my problem but I'm a sympathetic guy and I have tons of sympathy for frustrated fans throughout the US and Canada.

if u have so much sympathy for them then go root for another team... i swear to God you're freakin' annoying w/your constant negative talk about the franchise you supposedly support... at least islesfan knows what the hell he's talking about when he disses the Knicks... you don't even have your facts straight & you diss on them... name me 1 major market team in baseball that doesn't try to "buy their way to a championship" as you would call it... go root for the damn Royals or Pirates & then hate on the Yankees all u want... any Yankee fan that complains about their financial advantage is beyond stupid.

I can't change teams as easily as perhaps you can; so that's not something I'd even consider. I agree 100% that other teams in major markets try to buy championships; in all other sports, there are salary restrictions that prevent them from being able to do that. You CAN'T expect the owner to do that on their own. I attribute no blame to the Yankees for trying to capitalize on an unfair system. I bolded this above to make it as clear as possible. Any negativity I've attributed to the Yankees for having a high payroll is a figment of your imagination.

Not to mention, in George's 32 years as principle owner and the millions upon millions he spent, he only was able to produce only 6 championship teams. That's about 19 %. Hardly a buy.

In a league with 30 teams on a completely level playing field, you'd expect any one team to win a championship once every 30 years or 3% of the time. In part, by outspending everyone by more than any GM has in any sport, he increased his odds of winning a championship by 600%.

Calling Steinbrenner's ownership a failure is a joke. Most teams can't even win 1 title in 85 years(Red Sox) or 1 in 100(Cubs). Yankees won 6 in his 32 years. Unless you think he should have won every year he was owner, I'd say that's a pretty damn good number of titles for an owner.

Those counter-examples prove nothing other than that Cash-man tried but failed to buy championships in those prior years. I'm a Yankee fan who watches nearly all the games but I'll freely admit that we *try* to buy championships.
You are totally wrong dude! You don't get it. It is a sport first of all, that has become a competitive business over the years and a market like this needs to survive in. The Yankees are nothing like the loser Knicks! The Knicks are the perfect example of what 'NOT' to do. Look at the Knicks now. What are they' about 2, 3 games above .500 LIFETIME?! The Yankees have above .500 records against every major league baseball team they ever played. If the last 32 years didn't teach you a lesson then nothing will (of course without the George's meddlings).
And where were the Yankees after the last big dynasty ended with Yogi and Mantle, before George came along? We were mediocre. Owned by CBS who didn't do a thing to restore Yankee lore. George made us matter again and has put us into the future of competitiveness.

It sucks for fans outside of NY and Boston. That's not my problem but I'm a sympathetic guy and I have tons of sympathy for frustrated fans throughout the US and Canada.
And dude, you gotta get out in the world. Most people absolutely HATE the Yankees, with or without our payroll. I don't feel one bit sorry for any of them. I met some really big assholes over the years, especially in the midwest cities, just for wearing my Yankees cap.

That's not my problem but I'm a sympathetic guy and I have tons of sympathy for frustrated fans throughout the US and Canada.Chill pill time. Any negativity I've attributed to the Yankees for having a high payroll is a figment of your imagination.
if u have so much sympathy for them then go root for another team... i swear to God you're freakin' annoying w/your constant negative talk about the franchise you supposedly support... at least islesfan knows what the hell he's talking about when he disses the Knicks... you don't even have your facts straight & you diss on them... name me 1 major market team in baseball that doesn't try to "buy their way to a championship" as you would call it... go root for the damn Royals or Pirates & then hate on the Yankees all u want... any Yankee fan that complains about their financial advantage is beyond stupid.

You'd still be making a big mistake for taking sides. I thought you were a stand up Yankee fan. I'm disappointed.

I am sick and tired of these Yankee haters. Stop worry about the Yanks and worry why in hell your team can't win it all half the time as the Yankees. And also ask yourself the luxury tax where the hell does it go for the other teams
By outspending everyone by more than any GM has in any sport, he increased his odds of winning a championship by 600%.

And yet we only won 19% under George. 600%?!? You just proved that we don't buy them!

Good one G! Hey BONN, how do you explain the scrubs????????? Did we do that too? How do you explain the white sux? Did we do them wrong to??? And how bout those red sux??? Don't tell me that we robbed them too of more w.s. than us, by taking the Babe away. The guy they themselves wanted to give to us? You think I feel sorry for any of those losers?

that's like the classic gambler's fallacy logic at work there.

I wonder how BONN would explain how we won the first 20 world series also? There were no mega dollars involved. Were we unfair to teams that we beat before the money became an issue? Didn't the scrubs, sux and sux have a chance to knock us out in years past?? Absolutely!!! And did they do it? BIG FAT NOPE!!! So too bad, so sad to the other cities who failed miserably. It's a whole new ball game now. Smash and run, because that's what they are trying to do to us.
And I am beginning to hear that the league office is questioning the Yankees spending, because everyone is bitching and complaining. Including some so called Yankee fans alike. Here comes the cap folks! You want everything even? Well you just might get what you been wishing for.

I agree with every word you wrote but I don't see how it's connected to the statement I made that you're replying to.
