the entire league was practically using steroids for years.

You too Ike. How far back does it go, if it's been going on for years? The word was never even mentioned until about ten years ago.

My apologize to Martin, but I'm through with A-Rod. The next thing we'll find out is that Tex or even worse, Jeter is a user also.

Are you through with PEDer Pettitte too?

I have a very bad habit of remembering when someone screws up baseball. Pettitte is on my SL for life.

4949, simply because the word wasn't mentioned doesn't mean it wasn't used.

Steroids have been avaialable for a while.

We can easly go back to at least the 1980's when athletes were beginning to use it all over the place.

Ben Johnson was the big case and that was 1988.

That's over 20 years.

I'm just saying.

However, the statistical explosion of HRs is an easy stat to observe after 1996, but I am sure there were more than a few players using them before that.

PresIke @ 2/7/2009 5:09 PM
The point being is players didn't used to lift weights either.

Do we gripe about that as a difference in stats?

Pro sports are a profession that DEMANDS winning, and one can earn TONS of money for being successful.

That popular poster I used to see on a lot of big sports fans or jocks walls...

'No Fear'

hits it on the head.

Some will surly not use "enhancers" but our culture seems to feel it's okay to engage in all kinds of "questionable" or "unethical" behavior to get ahead.

Where is the outrage at this?

I barely even heard it until recently, since the economy is in the tank and folks are looking for who's to blame.

Maybe we all are.

Dude, were you even watching games yet in the 80's? I been watching games since the early 70's and I'll tell each and every one of you, the players who played then were for the most part, not cut and bulked up like they are today. There is a huge difference here!

The only players off the top of my memory that had any bulk, muscle were guys like Greg Luzinski, Jim Rice and these guys weren't knocking balls out of the ball parks at a pace of 50 to 60 something a year like they were doing up until a couple years ago!

We're talking about increased muscle that has increased bat speed and the already abilities and talents of the common baseball player and the results there after. That's why they have always been called major league ball players.

I WANT SOMEONE TO BRING ME PROOF THAT STEROIDS WERE USED BEFORE 1960, OR EVEN 1970?!

This is a same old stupid argument. Steroids are wrong, and you guys know there wrong and if you can prove to me that Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle were using them, then bring right here! If Joltin Joe was swinging a bat while using roids, then bring the proof right here and throw it in my face. I suppose the great Hank Aaron was doing it to huh? Don't just say it's been going on for years with absolutely no proof to show anyone.
4949 @ 2/7/2009 5:46 PM
It's interesting to note that Cecil was the last man to hit 50, before all of these balls started flying out of the parks left in right. The Yankees owned the most home runs as a team for years and suddenly that fell to in this steroid era. Roger Maris held the single season mark ....................... until all the suden three men passed him up more then once.

Don't you guys find it strange how no one was hitting like this, not until after the last baseball strike?? For those of you who weren't born yet, the word was that MLB had to get the fans back into the parks again. They needed a hero and how better to make a hero then to let him bulk up (everyone) and find that hero somewhere in baseball in the names of sosa, mcguire and bonds? It's been proven dude. More players have hit 50 or more home runs in the last ten years then all the decades put together!

I want someone to show me roids before our last strike and how it's altered our game?

I'm not sure what this has to do with players cheating by using steroids, but I said what I had to say. And it hurts.

You gotta be sick to do this to yourself.

it's looking more and more like over half of baseball has used PED's...unreal.

Does that really surprise you? With the amount of money that is at stake...and I would put money it is as far reaching in football and basketball as it is in baseball. Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

my bet is that over half of all pro athletes have experimented at some point or another w/PEDs, & a good amount of them are probably still using them in undetectable forms as we speak... i am no longer surprised to hear any athletes' name linked w/PED's these days... i wouldn't be surprised to learn that Lebron James is poppin' them like candy either... there's just way too much dollars at stake for guys not to take them if they think they can get away w/it.
djsunyc @ 2/7/2009 9:27 PM
yankee season will be drama filled before anyone reports to camp...hopefully they start off hot b/c if a few losses pile up...things could get nasty.
djsunyc @ 2/7/2009 10:38 PM
104 names on the list, only 1 released.

apparently "reporter" selena roberts who wrote this story is also writing a book about arod coming out this summer. LOL at the integrity of this whole situation.

i can only speak for myself but at this point, none of this bothers me. it will not take away from my enjoyment watching baseball.
TMS @ 2/7/2009 11:01 PM
whoever keeps leaking this supposedly "sealed" info needs to be prosecuted... either that or they need to reveal all the names on that list... i'm sick of every Steroid scandal story that's leaked out only having to do w/Yankee players, even if the stories are representative of time they spent while they weren't even Yankees to begin with... every ESPN story has them wearing Yankee uniforms... it's sickening.
islesfan @ 2/8/2009 12:41 AM
Hundreds of players were using PED's over the last 20+ years. There isn't a single team that's been clean. False indignation and piousness is nothing but BS. Especially from the media who turned a blind eye on it for years. To continue a witch hunt against certain players and certain teams is completely disingenuous and scumbagish. All while letting the caretakers of the game, Bud Selig and Company, continue to prosper and keep their reputations in tack.

I don't particularly care if ARod was doing this stuff, they didn't win shit with him from 2003-08 anyway, but the way this is all coming out is crap.

The failed test was part of an anonymous survey, with the results never to be revealed. The only reason the results, and the names associated with them, were revealed is because the House Oversight Committee forced MLB and the company who did the test to give them the results. You would think that the House Oversight Committee would have had other important things to concern themselves with, like maybe subprime mortgages, predatory lending and the SEC ignoring claims of Ponzi schemes. But they get their hands on the names of players who supposedly failed this test and now, amazingly enough, only a single name out of 104 is being leaked.

Maybe ARod did use steroids but you'd have to be blind to not see that the whole steroids in baseball issue is nothing but a witch hunt.

Personally, I don't care if he did or didn't. If any of it would improve the economy or help prosecute the greedy bastards who did this to our economy, I would care greatly, but it doesn't and I don't. I think all numbers and records from this era are fraudulent but I'll still enjoy the distraction that baseball will provide the next 9 months.
4949 @ 2/8/2009 9:49 PM
The Yankees won't be winning any world series, not until A-Rod's contract is run out. So sit back and relax guys. A-Rod is to the Yankees, what Marbury has been to the Knicks.

They been talking nothing but 'A-Roid' all day long on television. This is exactly how it's gonna be for the next few years.

This is my exact point. I long believed baseball should have gotten this crap out into the open, completely' so they could put it all behind them, us and the players. Prosecute if need be, but it's a little too late to move on now, way after the fact. I still say get it all out. Hide nothing, come clean, prosecute and bring in some new blood. There should be clauses in the contracts from now on, if you use, you lose the contract.

But the fact that nothing' was volunteered by baseball, tells me that the powers that be were behind it all along. I've lost a lot of trust in these guys. It's highly embarrassing and a complete disgrace to not only our organization, but to the entire league and direct slap in all of our faces. Sorry, I can't help it. I demand a clean game and if I can't get it, then I'd rather quit.

The only thing I'm looking forward to at this point is Jeets 3,000.
