i was at the yankee game tonight. sat in the bleachers (as usual).

in the 8th inning, a guy had mlb pitch by pitch on his phone. when the jays tied it at 2, section 37 and 39 went crazy.

then they showed the 4-2 score on the scoreboard and everybody went NUTS (with journey's don't stop believin' playing on the PA system). a huge boston sucks chant. what a crazy night of baseball.

I didn't realize what was happening when people started cheering since nothing was happening in a 12-0 game. I figured the Sox had lost but didn't see it on the main jumbotron. It was on the out of town scoreboard. That was awesome.

this team is only 2 games away from having the best record in baseball... that's pretty damn good when you consider how poor of a start they had this season.

btw, if we tie the Sux, we win the division because we own the tiebreaker.

meanwhile the Muts are proving once again to their fans why calling yourselves the 'best team in NY' is a little premature in May & June.

red sox fans are now saying the division means nothing. they are a lock for the playoffs so they just need to rest their players for the postseason...

umm, you guys still have a 2.5 game lead!!! what kind of loser mentality is that?
Allanfan20 @ 9/19/2007 11:10 AM
Mmmm, settling and bowing down the the Yankees.

It's not just Red Sox fans. It's the Boston media and the Red Sox organization themselves who are dismissing the importance of winning the Division. While I don't necessarily disagree with that, it's incredibly pathetic since they made such a big deal about how far ahead they were of the Yankees and how they would never catch them.

I still don't care about the division. I just want to go into the playoffs playing good ball with everyone rested and healthy. But if they win it and stick it to Boston, I'll be just as happy as I was for the previous 12.

The best part about last night's game was Moose finding his good stuff again. If his rough patch was just that and the rest helped him find his stuff, then it was all worth it. If he's right, he's as good of a 4th starter in the playoffs as you'll find.

I'd love to see him have 2 more starts just like last nights to end the season.

2 games in the loss column & gaining fast... i predicted the Sawx would go on a losing streak after that tough loss to close out the Yankee series, & sure enough, they're about to get swept by the Jays.

I am loving it. The sux don't have manny, but this is a norm for manny to take time off during the year, he is really a miserable ball player, great, great hitter, undiciplined athlete it seems tho. Anyway now lets see how the sox play with the mounting pressure. So far francona let gagne bury his team tonight, I hope he keeps making coaching mistakes...

Someone named "soxluva" is on the Red Sox board trying to calm everyone down, saying that everything is fine and how the only reason the Sox have been almost caught is because of injuries since they played so great during a stretch in the middle of the season. Now he's droning on about how many good young players the Sox have.

LOL... he is trying to spin this choke job huh? well honestly outside of ellsbury who seems like he is going to be a nice little slap hitter, what young talent does the sox have. I mean lets face it, the yankees right now have some of the best young arms in baseball and this comes from the mouth of a lot of experts, and I am not talking about just joba, hughes and kennedy, I am talking about guys like the kid we got from detroit, is it Humberto sanchez or something like that? the yanks are sitting pretty right now. Epstein made a huge mistake with trading gabbard for gagne, and they also gave up some real good young talent to acquire beckett, coco crisp was a mess of a signing and manny is getting older and since he really was never one to keep in great shape, seems to be breaking down a bit.

yea, I agree, the were poking their chest out when the lead was 14, they buried the yankees in the media, my friend is a sox fan and he was all teeth and gums earlier in the year, now he doesn't even want to talk baseball, he said, now it is all about the NFL.. yea that is a loser mentality.. hahahaha... Again boston can hang their hats on 2004, but honestly the yankees team wasn't as strong as it is now, mussina and leiber were our #1 and 2 starters, and we had tony clark getting major dh minutes, this team is younger and stronger, sox fans can make all the excuses they want...... they can hang their hats on 2004, we can hang ours on the past decade!

Seriously, the fact that they keep hanging their hat on 2004 is pathetic since everything that's happened since then has proved that it was nothing but a fluke. They lose in the first rd in 2005 and don't make the playoffs in 2006, after the Yankees come into Fenway and smack them around for 5 games.

Now they may or may not win the division but they choked away a huge portion of a 14 1/2 game and are playing terrible ball going into the playoffs, which portends to be a very short stay. Of the 4 teams, I would rank them 4th going into the playoffs, regardless of the final standings or home field.
BigSm00th @ 9/19/2007 12:30 PM
all i want to do is avoid playing the motherf-ing angels in the first round. i'd rather win the wild card and play CLE than win the division and have to deal with the angels in a 5 game set.
islesfan @ 9/19/2007 12:47 PM
The Angels are banged up. Normally I wouldn't want to play them either but if the Yankees can continue to play at such a high level, I don't think it matters. We can beat the Angels or anybody for that matter if we continue to play at this level.

Matsui is breaking out of his slump and ARod is going through his 3 week mini slump, which should be over by the time the playoffs roll around.
TMS @ 9/19/2007 12:50 PM
word, seeing Matsui finally break out of his slump is KEY... when he gets hot, he can carry an offense just like ARod, Giambi & Bobby A... Doug M is getting into the act too... unbelievable.

let's just hope this team stays healthy the rest of the way & goes into the postseason firing on all cylinders.
djsunyc @ 9/19/2007 12:52 PM
doug should be starting everyday at 1b. i'll take his defense over giambi's offense any day of the week.
playa2 @ 9/19/2007 12:54 PM
Martin if your intentions were to bring up the O.T forums , why didn't you put the yankees mets baseball and Giants football forums there
TMS @ 9/19/2007 12:55 PM
i agree, i like Doug's defense at 1B... Giambi is a great weapon to have off the bench as a pinch hitting option along w/Betemit... we can't afford to have Giambi's defensive weaknesses cost us in a big game anymore, especially if Man Cave Itch is hitting.

They need one of their big lefty bats, either Abreu or Matsui, to be hot in the playoffs. Force the other team to worry about lefty-righty matchups in order to pull starters and burn through relievers as they go through the heart of the order. Can't let them pitch around Jeter and ARod.

I don't know. If Giambi is going to play first like he did Friday night in Boston then I don't want him anywhere near 1st base. But if he can play an average 1st base, his bat makes the lineup so incredibly deep. Even if he's just seeing a lot of pitches and taking walks.

Making opposing starters work hard and getting into weak middle relief is going to be very important. Against the Red Sox or Indians I would put Giambi at first. The Red Sox starters are all righties, except for Lester who may not start, and the Yankees will need to wear down their starters. Against the Indians, they'll have to work over Carmona probably twice in a series.

The Angels are a different story. Those games are always close and with the Angels playing small ball, the Yankees will need solid defense at first base so Minky plays and Giambi sits. Plus the Angels have good middle relief.

i can't take that chance with giambi at first.

doug is batting .248, giambi is at .243. of course giambi has the power #'s, but this lineup doens't need those power #'s unless it's a pinch hit situation late and we're trailing.

forget giambi friday vs. boston, if doug is not at first on sunday night, we lose that game on 3 seperate occasions.
