Wang may have cost Torre his job. I don't even know what to make of this. Is it just two very bad starts? Or does Wang choke under pressure? Or is Wang's blister bad?

I dunno. I think it's a bit premature to call Wang a choke artist. Something may be up, because his last start before the season ended was poor, and he may be hurt. Either way, to pull Wang in the 2nd inning screams of panic. This could be the end of the Torre era here, for sure.
Bonn1997 @ 10/8/2007 8:44 PM
A rain-out might be the best possible scenario here!
tkf @ 10/8/2007 9:57 PM
bad starting pitching and mussing was a joke... the sad thing is that paul byrd is a slow pitching hack pitcher and he is dominating us.. that is sad.. we get bases loaded and pop up in the infield. they get bases loaded and get bloop hits and seeing eye hits... this is what happens when you put your back up against the wall..

Nice season, but many changes will follow and honestly we need it...
Bonn1997 @ 10/8/2007 10:01 PM
Mussina was a joke? I don't get it

What changes would you make?
Silverfuel @ 10/8/2007 10:09 PM
Stay away from arod. I hope they don't get greedy and resign him for the ticket & jersey money.

What else? That's only one change.
I'm gonna go against the grain and say very little needs to be changed. I don't really care if they change managers or not. I like the future of the pitching staff a lot and I think the poor hitting is just a fluke that you could never have expected to happen.
Bonn1997 @ 10/8/2007 10:22 PM
So because Joba went two innings yesterday, Farnsworthless has to pitch tonight
islesfan @ 10/8/2007 10:27 PM
Arod - Take an extension or leave
Posada - re-sign for 2 years at a reasonable price
Clemens - Gone
Sign an everyday first baseman, defense first
Re-sign Abreu for 2 years
Make Matsui the everday DH and Damon the everyday LF
Get rid of Giambi
Make middle relievers out of some of those good arms in the minors.
Rotation: Wang, Pettitte (if he picks up his option), Hughes, Joba (yes Joba) and Mussina. Kennedy starts year in minors, first to be called up.
Get rid of Farnsworth at any price.

It's still a good core. They just suck in the playoffs. But with Hughes and Joba hopefully becoming legit starters, they can have a solid playoff pitching that they've been missing the last few years. They desperately need an ace. It sure as hell ain't Wang.

If they sign someone like Andruw Jones, it'll be a huge fucking mistake.

Oh, and get a new manager.

Would you rather have Farnsworth pitch with a 5 run lead or to keep a game close enough with your season on the line?

Torre is an idiot for using Joba for 2 innings.

So basically you wouldn't add anything significant to this team?
Why not use Kennedy in the starting lineup from the start of the season? He certainly looked good enough to earn the spot.
I disagree with getting rid of Giambi. He has no trade value now, but if he's healthy, he's still a dangerous bat. It's not like we gain anything by waiving him and it's not like he's a clubhouse problem.
I could see Steinbrenner adding Barry Bonds to the lineup to add some "juice" (literally) to the offense.

I think having Hughes for a full year and Joba as a new starter, plus some young arms in the bullpen, would be very significant.

Chances are they still have a very good offense. If they can upgrade their pitching from within and improve their defense at 1B and LF then they should be in the hunt next year.
islesfan @ 10/8/2007 10:39 PM
Kennedy will be in the mix but if they do make Joba a starter and Pettitte picks up his option, they don't have room for him in the starting 5. I'm sure he'll make a good amount of starts with the Yankees next season though.

Giambi is the epitome of what is wrong with he Yankees. He's old and doesn't do crap for the money they're paying him. He's shot.

Getting Bonds would really piss me off. Almost as pissed off as when the Knicks hired Isiah.

Mussina deserves no spot in the starting rotation.

Giambi had 37 HR and 113 RBI last year. How do you know this wasn't just an injury-plagued year and he needs the off-season for his plantar fasciitis to heal? Can you imagine how disastrous it would be if you waived him and then he hit 40/110 elsewhere?
Bonn1997 @ 10/8/2007 10:51 PM
A-Rod's swinging very well. I'm not even sure I'd let him go without trying to re-sign him if he opted out
Bonn1997 @ 10/8/2007 11:01 PM
You've gotta bring Rivera in here for the next five outs.
Bonn1997 @ 10/8/2007 11:54 PM
What a disappointing end to a thrilling season. You put so much faith in a team after a 162 game season and then anything can happen in the post-season.

Pretty fair breakdown, I'd say.

If that's all you're looking for, why does Doug M not qualify?
PresIke @ 10/8/2007 11:59 PM
I agree with this...say bye bye to Giambi...please
