DJ needed to have a better year to get a 4 or 5 year deal. to have the worst year coincide with free agency is unfortunate, but he should've had a player opt out after year 9 in his massive 10-yr deal -- he could've opted out after a WS win and a great personal season and got a 5 or 6 yr deal.yanks have been doing the short 2-yr deals with rivera and its worked out fine. have a bounce back year and then don't suck in the contract year the next time around and i'm sure they'll give him another 2-3 yr deal. if he keeps at the hit pace he had last year (180), after 3 more seasons jeter will be 6th on the hit list with 3466 hits. he'll be well within reach of tris speaker (3514), musial (3630), and hank aaron (3771) for the yanks to want to bring him back on a 1-2 yr deal at the very least.
If he's confident in his ability to have a bounce-back year, he should ask for lots of performance incentives in his contract. That would protect the Yankees too in case he doesn't bounce back. If he's not confident, then that alone is worrisome.

at then end of the day, he has done a ton for this franchise and they have made him a very rich man. in yankleeland, another year and another $20M or so will not hurt their chances to sign other key players and will let a player like jeter, who arguably can be called the best yankee ever, to go out in a classy fashion.
That's not really a fair analysis because Jeter's agent has been doing the public talking for him. He recently called the Yankees' $45 mil offer "baffling" (because of how little it was).

i agree w/this about making public announcements... they should keep this all close to the cuff & let the process ride out w/o the grandstanding... i also think tacking on an extra year wouldn't be the end of the world, but no way near at $20M... if Derek wants the security of that 4th year, he'll have to give up a little in annual payout... both sides need to reach a happy middle ground here w/o going through the unnecessary back & forth in the press.

I agree with this. While the Yankees shouldn't have talked to the press about this and taken the higher road, Jeter should have spoken up about his agent if this really wasn't what he felt. Until he does, Jeter is just as guilty as the Yankees.
With that said, if it's true the sides are 50 to 100 million a part, then that's BAD and maybe Jeter needs to fire his agent. He's making Jeter look bad so far IMO.
ARods Contract is a disaster.
Derek got paid for 10 years very verywell. At 15per he is still the highest paid SS in the league.
I remember when Garciappara rejected a 4 year 60mil deal and got hurt never coming close to making that kind of money.
I want jeter to stay and its a shame it gets all in the papers. Nobody is going to pay him even 15 per.
If he wants to retire thats one thing. But being the highest paid SS in the game at 36 is very generous by the Yankees.

agreed. if the extra year is really what's holding it up, he should back off the money and sign for something like 4/50.

Wow, wait a minute...you heard they're off by 50 to 100 mil?!?!? That would mean Jeter's agent is asking for $95 to 145 mil!

He's going to have to fire his agent. He's getting horrible business advise somehow. That, and he's going to have to throw his apparent enormous ego out of the window.

$15M per over 4 years should be the absolute most the Yankees even consider offering Jeter at this point, & even that's way too generous... he deserves some recognition for all the great seasons but he's already been compensated better than any other athlete in professional sports history other than ARod... seriously at his age & declining production how can anyone even think they'd get anywhere close to that level money?
lets face it, DJ is not going to get that deal on the open market. he has basically no leverage in this situation. yanks came in with their initial 3 yr 45 mil which was certainly generous. presumably jeter is trying to get a 4th year. 180 hits per season x 4 seasons = DJ will be 3646 and 4th on the all time list. i assume jeter just wants the years and chance to climb (and possibly top) the all-time hit list.
regardless of what it is, hopefully this can be resolved in a week or so, yanks can turn their sights to re-signing rivera and hopefully getting lee.

Jeter's had a great career but the skeptic in me thinks the difference is nothing other than physical attractiveness and that if Posada or Rivera had just come off a year where their production was in the bottom quarter of the league, we'd be offering them a 1 year, $5 mil contract.
um, maybe because of these:

he will go down as arguably one of, if not, the best yankees in team history. taking nothing away from posada or mariano, but jeter is in a more visible position than both with much more field time. dont know about posada for sure, but mariano will def get a plaque next to jeter's shortly after retirement.

Yeah, I'm aware of his stats. The .837 career OPS is definitely well above average (although below Jorge's). Unlike Rivera, his numbers are hardly earth shattering though. So if he looked the same as Posada or Giambi (especially with the huge mustache!), you think he'd still be the face of the Yankees' franchise? And we'd have to give him at least $45 mil if not not much more at this point? I think he's simply had his image marketed better than those guys and a lot of it has to do with having a charming, youthful appearance.

Interesting...I might hold his overall play (statistical regular-season career and all his post-season contributions) a little higher than some people but I can see your point a little. Interesting take..I betcha appearance and how he has carried himself over the years (which, let's face it, has been nothing short of exemplary) has some bearing here, sure. Yanks are acting like none of that now makes a difference however. Tough situation -- I hope this gets worked out to both sides' satisfaction and soon...It doesn't feel right man...I will always hold Jeter in high regard..He's our captain. I want him back...My brother-in-law said the other night that Jete's probably working out like a madman right now..I hope so. I don't think he's done. He's gotta realize though that his play has fallen off some and he's a little older now..Same token, the Yankee brass should realize that you don't air out dirty laundry about you team's captain in public and make the funny papers repeatedly like they've done recently. On the contrary -- you handle this with the grace and respect it deserves..I'm confident each side will give a little until they find a resolution they can each live with. It didn't have to get all testy though & that's on the Yankees, not Derek & his agent..Right from Hal saying 'it could get messy' to Randy Levine's comments to Cash saying some weird stuff to Hank once again putting his foot in this mouth...Stuff like that should never have been said publicly..

Don't get me wrong. The career #s are impressive. They're just not earth shattering. With a guy like Mariano, you have to ask, "how on earth could a pitcher still do this at age 40?!" There's no "How on earth could...?" question that you can ask or even contemplate about Jeter.
I don't see anything different between how Mariano, Jorge, and Jeter have carried themselves over the years. I don't know much about them personally but none has done (or at least gotten caught) doing anything illegal or anything in poor taste. That's about all we really know.
I disagree with the claim that the Yankees are acting like none of his past matters, though. They're probably offering at least double what Jeter can get from any other team and they shouldn't have to pay even more than that. The Yankees have already rewarded him quite nicely for everything in the past. At this point, I definitely still want him back. However, if his final decision is that $45 mil just isn't good enough for him, then I don't want him anyway.
agree that 3/$45 mil is more than fair. DJ is a 36 yr old SS coming off the worst yr of his career. that contract puts him atop the highest paid SS in the league.
disagree about DJ's career #'s... i mean, he's going to be the fastest to 3,000 hits and is possible he is the all-time hit king when all is said and done.
DJ has benefited but yanks have benefited from having him as the face of the franchise. he's the good looking SS hitting at the top of the order who fans love. he plays every day (unlike rivera and posada). everyone has made money off of this, yanks and jeter. hopefully the egos can be pushed aside and we can get something done here.
if its a 4 year deal, there is a pretty good chance jeter is 3rd or 4th all-time on the hits list at the end of the contract.
