It was a great season!!! Yankees by some measures were picked to be in last place and instead made a wildcard spot!!!
Many teams go years without such a season, and it has been only 3 years since they last made the playoffs.
I disagree completely. The Mets had a great season with a team that was built from ground up to have sustained success for years to come. The Yankees had a season similar to the Knicks 54win season where you knew it was going to be a one year wonder. At least the Knicks stood a chance of getting out of the 1st round though.

I agree. How do you outspend every team in a league with no salary cap and make only one playoff game in 3 years? We haven't scored a run in a playoff game since 2012. Sure, the last 2 years were worse but that doesn't make this 87 win team something to celebrate. I bet any of Dolan's GMs could put together a .530 team if there had been no cap.
87 wins (.537) is more like a 43-39 NBA season, though, not like our 54 win season.

This team wasn't picked to do shit, and still made it to a wild card game. A good season for the Mets is when they don't collapse in the last three weeks of the season. Congratulations.

Also why sit Elsbury and not Gardner when Elsbury has experience and was a key contributor to Boston winning championships? And besides Elsbury was hitting the final 2 weeks of the season. Gardner had been atrocious since the allstar break. You see Girardi never goes with his gut. He started Gardner because he hit 20pts higher against lefties. So what an assinine decision to pull on your 7yr $150mil man. 2yrs into his contract.

So do we go get Chris Davis to improve the offense? Whiffs a ton but I think we could count on 40 HRs/110 RBI outta this dude right in the middle of the order. Right in his prime--I think he's 29-30 years old. 5 yrs/$100mm sound about right? He could DH for a yr then take over for Tex at 1B after next season. I'd love for Bird to inherit 1B after Tex's contract is up but part of me thinks maybe we make a run at Davis and then turn around and shop Bird or a Bird/Bryan Mitchell package for a 3B upgrade over Headley (we need more production than .260/10 HRs outta 3B -- was thinking maybe we see if A-Rod can resume playing 3B part-time but I don't know how realistic that is) or another legit SP maybe. Or we keep Bird and rotate Bird/Davis at 1B/DH to keep each guy fresh...You figure Davis may cost $20mm per which would balloon the payroll back over $200mm but only for one yr -- after next season, both Tex and Beltran's contracts come off the books ($39mm total). Davis isn't the ideal FA target, I understand, but he makes some sense the more you think about him.
Ever since the end of the steroid era, baseball players have been statistically peaking around age 25 or 26 with a big drop around age 30. The last 5 or 6 years, the team has fallen into the trap of catching guys at the tail end of their primes and giving them large contracts in which 1 or 2 years still overlap with the tail end of their primes and the 5 or 6 years are outside their primes. The team needs to use its money to buy players who are under 25 and ideally prospects who are closer to 20. You can buy draft picks in the NBA. Why can't Cashman find a way to do that too? Why can't we take back a veteran's bad contract and get prospects in compensation?
I'll tell ya, there's a lot of downside with Chris Davis as well. Maybe we do stay away.. First off, I was probably off on the money he'll get: I speculated 5 yrs/$100mm -- was just reading an internet article saying he may get anywhere in the neighborhood of 7 yrs/$140mm - 8 yrs/$200mm...Dude whiffed 208 times this year, man. That's absolutely insane!! He also had that abysmal year in 2014 where he didn't even hit .200. Struck out 173 times in only 450 ABs that year too. Still, the power was there that year (26 HRs). I don't like that he's left-handed too. If anything we probably need to add more right-handed power. Bryce Harper isn't a FA for another few years. He's left-handed as well, but man is he special...Even a guy like Nelson Cruz would make sense--doesn't look to be a guy like that on the market though...Best case scenario for us would've been for Aaron Judge to have had a big-time year in the minors this year -- 30+ HRs, etc. That didn't happen. We'll have to be more patient with him. Hopefully that big year happens next season and he'll be ready to take over RF from Beltran in 2017. In the meantime, we might just have to wait this out and go with what we have--sit tight, wait for the turnover to occur and live with whatever guys like A-Rod, Tex and Beltran can give us next season. We'll really go as far as those 3 take us (and Ellsbury too)..If those first 3 play like they did this year (and the pitching holds up), we'll contend for a playoff spot again. If not, we might struggle to win 80 games. We might have to wait for 2017 for the renaissance to take place. Kinda shitty knowing next year may be a down year/transition year. You think as a Knick fan I'd be used to that by now.
Forgot Justin Upton and Yoenis Cespedes are out there this winter. There's some potential right-handed pop right there...Maybe we go get one of these guys for RF (Upton's been exclusively a LFer but I think he's good enough to transition to RF; Cespedes can play all 3 OF spots), have Beltran share DH ABs with A-Rod/play RF occasionally, A-Rod picks up extra ABs playing some part-time 3B when Beltran DHes, Headley's PT gets reduced (sorry guy--3B is a position we need more offense out of), with Judge in the mix for 2017. That might not be bad...Just looking for at least one impact bat that could make us better next year. I'd like to try to compete with Toronto next year if we can.
I don't want to give long-term contracts where most of the years are in the players' 30s. That ignores everything that's now known about player productivity and age. That's just an endless cycle of guys like Ellsbury and Sabbathia.

Bird lost for the season with a torn labrum. Wow--that hurts. Even if he started out in AAA, you knew at some point we would've saw him next yr. Wishing him a speedy recovery. Hopefully Tex has a banner year free of injury and Birdy's ready to go in 2017--that was the target for him to take over full-time at 1B anyway. Read Brian McCann had the same surgery in 2012 and he recovered and regained top form.
Cash has mentioned Castro playing some 3B recently. Can't wait to see how realistic that is and how he looks there. If he looks good there, it opens up a lot of possibilities, more than just giving Headley a day off every once in a while. It opens up the possibility of Refsnyder playing 2nd. That could be big, esp. if there's a need for more offense.. I mean if Headley's nothing more than .250/10 HRs with shoddy defense (I thought he was at least above average with the glove at 3rd--not last year), Castro at 3B, Refsnyder at 2B and seeing if we can find a taker for Headley (or reducing Headley to a backup role--what do we owe him?) might wind up being our best option in the long run. I know we got Castro with the idea of him playing 2nd but I think we could be at our best with him playing 3rd full-time.
I don't think we will ever get a full season with Tex anymore and will probably see McCann playing first
