What's our official roster?

i think joba will be in the pen as long as the yankees have 5 effective starters; thus, i think moose might be more important than pettitte. if the yanks go 5 deep with wang, pettitte, hughes, kennedy, and mussina (or one of the many other SPs in the minors), they'll keep joba in the pen all year. if they can close any lead out in 7-8-9 they will be dangerous.

we will be seeing Alan Horne before the season is over... he's supposed to be the goods too... Joba belongs in the pen, he's got that closer's mentality.

man seeing joba come in for the 8th and then MO for the 9th was really a great thing to witness on opening day. reminds me so much of riviera to wetteland it is scary, joba's got that crazy silly stuff nobody can hit and riviera is the old wily vet who pounds the inside of the strike zone w/ 94 mph every time.

anyone see old larry bowa lose it tonight in dodger town?

giambi looked pretty good in the field today. i still think, though, that bobby cano has the goods to bat 5th if giambi gets hurt (though he looks great).

man i love ending the night with baseball tonight, baseball is back, thank god the knicks are almost done they are so god damn pathetic and embarassing.
TMS @ 4/2/2008 2:52 AM
Robbie's more of a #3 hitter in most lineups... i'd rather see Matsui batting 5th behind ARod, he's a proven & consistent run producer every year he's been a Yankee... Robbie's got a great bat but i'd rather see him hitting either 2nd, 3rd, 6th or 7th depending on whether Damon or Giambi are playing or not.

can't agree w/u enough about Joba setting up for Mo... it's a devastating 1-2 punch that no one else in the majors has.
TMS @ 4/2/2008 2:52 AM
btw, what did Bowa do?

I'm starting to think you keep Joba in the setup role all year. Like you said, it gives the Yankees an advantage that nobody in baseball has. It can be like 96 again. I also think the Yankees will have a very good and deep bullpen this year and that's without anything from Farnsworth. I really like Traber, Ohlendorf and Albaledejo in their roles.
VDesai @ 4/2/2008 10:56 AM
Joba will start in the pen, but by the summer time when we need a lift in our rotation he will move over. It's a clever way of keeping us under his innings limit. By the summertime, guys like Humberto Sanchez, Melancon and other fireballers will be ready to contribute to the big league pen and be stoppers. I thought Patterson should've made it over Bruney- I'm not comfortable with Bruney cause he can't throw strikes.

Bruney had a great camp. I'd be willing to give him a chance but keep him on a short leash. I don't expect much from Sanchez this year but I'd like to see what Melancon and Cox can do later this year. Next year it'll be Sanchez and Brackman's turn, maybe even Betances. That's not even mentioning Horne and Marquez who are likely to see spot starts this season to fill in for injuries or to keep Hughes and Kennedy's innings down.

The Yankees have a lot of good young arms in their system.
VDesai @ 4/2/2008 3:18 PM
Patterson should be able to help. he was lights on in the spring (only 1 hit in almost 8 innings). He couldn't have really pitched any better. Hopefully he gets a chance quite soon- he was awesome in the minors and a great find from the independent league.

I think Ohlendorf could have a big year.
BigSm00th @ 4/2/2008 8:01 PM
joba's makeup and stuff are perfect for the pen though. if summer comes around and they need a boost w/ the 5 starters i hope they use on of the rooks there, i think the joba/mo end of game combo is a real competitive advantage, as someone said, who else can match it? in addition, its a lot easier on yankee universe when that idiot farnsworth doesnt come in with the game on the line, i can almost see last night unfolding once rios gets to second and farnsworth throwing off-speed stuff 5 feet in the dirt.
TMS @ 4/3/2008 2:56 AM
if a need arises for a #5 pitcher, u can always find one, or just promote from within... Alan Horne should be ready to pitch in the majors sometime this year... i really would rather see Joba playing the full season as our setup guy... i have zero faith in Farnsworthless & Hawkins, who better take that #21 off his back.

btw, Bruney was looking great this spring... he was hitting triple digits on the radar gun in a game i watched & his location looked much better... the guy who shouldn't have made the bullpen is Alby, his #'s were not that impressive IMO... coulda done him well to start off the season at AAA.
TMS @ 4/4/2008 11:52 PM
is it too early to say "I told u so" about LaTroy Hawkins? just checking...

2 inning totals:

8 hits / 7 runs / 0 Ks / 4.00 WHIP / .615 BAA / 31.50 ERA

eeesh.
VDesai @ 4/6/2008 3:00 PM
The offense blows so far this year. When you look up and down at the names and salaries of those guys they need to produce. But the Yanks ALWAYS seem to start slow with the bats and then hit a lot during the summer.

On a side note Wang really looks great, which is nice to see after he got rocked in the playoffs.
BigSm00th @ 4/6/2008 6:27 PM
yea, it seems the yanks always need the weather to get better before their bats finally wake up. matsui is carrying the load right now, melky was looking very good in the field and at the plate before his suspension.

damon is 3 of 22 right now, i've never liked the guy and if he isn't producing at the plate, i hope they give brett gardner (he's at AAA right now) or austin jackson (AA) a chance in left field. hopefully damon gets going but if he is still hitting .250 in june i don't see what he brings to the table.

giambi started slow as well, obvoiusly surprising given how hot he was in spring training. i know girardi is going to give him time to get into a groove at first and i think he will get it going, but the depth at 1B is solid w/ duncan and betemit. i wish duncan would get more chances to hit righties since he absolutely owns them and i think the offense is way too lefthanded at this point. if we put duncan at first and hitting 6th, the lineup goes damon (L), jeter (R), abreu (L), arod (R), matsui (L), duncan (R), cano (L), posada (S), cabrera (L) or something along those lines, i just think w/ giambi in there the lineup is easy to pitch to late in games w/ the string of lefties.

gotta love joba right now, his performance is pivotal to success. he's been HUGE in every single win this season, and i don't expect that to change. hopefully moose can get a quality start tomorrow.
TMS @ 4/6/2008 8:35 PM
Moose better pick it up tomorrow & give us a good start... the Rays are no joke this year... pretty solid pitching & they've always had good hitters.
TMS @ 4/6/2008 9:49 PM
speaking of pitching, how about Mariano? 3 saves in 3 opportunities, 0 runs allowed... looking as dominant as ever.
BigSm00th @ 4/6/2008 11:53 PM
i don't think the MLB has seen a closing duo this good since wetteland/riviera. joba looks good and riviera has been excellent as you said. i have a strange feeling farnsworth will be OK this year given the less pressure and girardi (presumably) using him better. hawkins has looked terrible. i think ohlendorf will only get better as the year goes on.

don't hold ur breathe on Farns... the guy was horrible last year in a 7th inning role too & so far this season hasn't been good at all... i would much rather see Edwar or Veras brought back up & Hawkins given the early boot, w/Bruney & Ohly taking over Farns' role out of the pen... i only wanna see Farnsworthless strictly in a mopup role if at all
VDesai @ 4/7/2008 9:43 AM
The pitching will be fine once the bats start scoring more than 3 runs a game. The pen has a lot of nice options right now.
TMS @ 4/7/2008 3:53 PM
i have no problem w/the pen as long as i never have to see Farns or Hawkins on the mound in any meaningful situations.
