Just when you think you've heard it all...
Iraqi soccer fan shoots player dead
Mon Mar 16, 2009 3:25pm EDT
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - An Iraqi soccer fan shot dead a player of the opposing team as he tried to score an equalizing goal in the final minutes of a match, police said Monday.
The shooting Saturday in Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, during a match between local teams, underscored the country's propensity to lawlessness even as violence by militant groups falls to lows not seen since mid-2003.
"As soon as Haider Kadhim (the player) was alone in front of the goalkeeper and close to equalizing, a fan in the crowd fired a pistol at him," a senior police officer in Hilla, who declined to be named, told Reuters.
"We arrested this fan immediately but unfortunately the player died."
Iraqis love soccer and have often expressed hope the game would help reconcile warring ethnic groups and sects.
Iraq's surprise victory in the 2007 Asian Cup brought rare joy and unity to the shattered nation, with Shi'ites, Sunni Arabs and Kurds pouring into the streets to celebrate their team's 1-0 win over Saudi Arabia in the Jakarta final.

They play with such "emotion"!
We just don't understand them.
Sad part is this really isn't that shocking.
I've seen some soccer brawls. Soccer fans and players don't play.

When you deal with people stuck in mid-ages it is not surprising.
The value of human live is so low out there.
Give them another 2-3 hundred years and they will be OK.
But I afraid they do not have this time and their “civilization” will not last too long.
I am so glad we are divided by big dip ocean and so many nuclear submarines, warships, and military bases. I am also glad that we have Israeli to have these guys in check for us.
Also we should be grateful to our soldiers who had to stay close to this mess and protect our world from all this chaos.

Israel is just as bad as these dudes my man. Keep them in check? Israel is the one who has been instigating shit for years. Just because they have the baking of the US doesn't mean what they do is right. That being said, I agree with everything else you said.

Do not talk about stuff you have no idea about.
Israel is our front line of defense.
And they are beating sheet of these retards for years for us to keep this mess where it is.
Israel is advanced democratic country surrounded by religious and military dictatorships that hated us Americans and want to see all of us dead.
If not our f..ng liberals and European bubble-heads they will end them long time back and bomb them to the stone edge where they belong.
Even 9-11 cannot teach us the lesson. Mind-bugging…

You are too brainwashed by the American media. That's all I'll say about that. I know exactly about what I'm talking about. Thanks though. Don't feel like getting into any lengthy debates so I'll just stay out of the topic.

Are you kidding? Where you saw my point of view in American media? Come on!!!
All American media is anti-Israel.
I was in Israel multiple times.
My friends are leaving in Israel and fight for this country.
Man, woman, young boys and girls. And they fight for their lives and our freedom.
They build this country from send and make it beautiful, modern country with freedom for everybody who deserves it.
And I know they will fight for the last man regardless of US will support them or not.
...All American media is anti-Israel...
Ahem. Right. And Starbury is the leader of the Celtics!
And, man, if we had Balkman on our team, we'd win it all this year!
And, and, and Lavor Postell made the All-Star team!
(I'm trying to think of _any_ consistently anti-Israel US media but drawing a blank. Maybe there are some leftover John Birch or KKK newsletters around but the media I can think of that is highly critical of Israel tends to, um, quite pro-Israel, significantly Jewish, and even more critical of Israel's obvious enemies, let's say The Nation, NYRB, and Jon Stewart. The mighty mighty Chomsky, perhaps the highest profile US critic, is pro-Israel and, duh, tougher on Israel's enemies. Even Norman Finkelstein, who lost his career and was deported and banned from Israel for criticizing Israel is, well, both Jewish and pro-Israel.
Now, if you define anti-Israel as being critical of the occupation, critical of the invasions of Lebanon or Gaza, critical of AIPAC, or believing it's not a bad idea to talk to Hamas, well, yeah, you have a point. But, doh, I'm pretty upset at US bankers and their friends right now, and I think the financial meltdown is serious business, but don't call me anti-American, thank you very much.)
Starbury MVP!

If Israel wanted to, they could end the conflict.
Problem is, it requires going into the gutter with them.
the problem is when you propogate lies to the desporate ingnorant they believe the lies instead of hope. Greed and coruption for power feeds the petty jealous tribes against tribes. Even if they could wipe out Israel, they would continue the quest against the west and against themselves. They are corrupt so they can be bought.
It is pretty interesting to see opinions of people who never leave or even visited Israel.
You can have right opinion about life on Mars or on Alfa Centaurs with the same accuracy.
Just go visit with open eyes and open heart and you will see the real life not the propaganda.
It is pretty quiet and civilized place and you can get in trouble only... if you decided to visit the Arab Villages.
But you can get in trouble in US also if you will go visit some "neighborhoods" with people who not used to work but more steel or beg.
Fortunately Israel has no enemies who can be matched with Israeli Army, intelligence, and determination of people to be free.
If you will come there you will be amazed what free people can do together. And no one will be able to defeat them.
I felt safer in Isreal than I do in NYC!
Isreal has more diversity than anyother nation except the U.S.!
It is a true melting pot.
Many refugees left the country on their own accord believing Isreal would be destroyed and they could return in glory. They want back. The ones that stayed and ingegrated with others have faired very well.
The lands returned on the west bank and the Gaza are a mess. They got what they wanted and do nothing with it.
No doubt there have been disinfranchised who have fallen victom to progress and expansion.
Tell me what other nation does not have this? What other nation has the perfect society?
We do this every day in this country.
If you really want to understand Israel's position read up on their independence in 1948 and the sense of urgency for declaring it. After centuries of persecution they decided to take matters into their own hands than rely on others.
There is no solution to the current conflict. We can only hope to just keep it moving along. God help the planet if someone nukes Israel. The retaliation will be harsh. The planet will pay dearly.
Right or wrong: thats how it will go down. I guess its all how you look at things?

Just on point. Thanks man... I started thinking I am all alone here with my opinion.
We all have different views on things but open mind is a key to mutual understanding and ultimately surviving of human race.

I wouldn't call it "independence." The land was legally stripped from one group and given to another, which is a basis of the conflict. The persecuted got theirs from another group that now feels persecuted too.

Many religions and people can claim Jerusleam as their home. The Israelites were driven from the land by the Pharoah and enslaved into Egypt. Christianity and Islam were not yet created.
That might be a religious definition.
Like I said, read up. Start by looking at the Balfour Declaration of 1917 and the next 31 years. Then bone up on how the nation was actually created.
Read up on how the Golan Vally was drained by the british and cultivated by "settlements" where nobody could inhabit the land before. Once it became a breadbasket does it become desired.
There are some interesting and legit viewpoints both for and against the Declaration. No doubt in history people get Phuched over and the middle east has many sore points besides Israel. In the case of Israel, genecide was not applied to the indiginous population as have in many great societies in history.
Jealousy is strong trait amung the muslim tribes and has prevented much progress in much of the region.
If civilization started in the region what stopped it? By all accounts the epicenter of the earths civilization should be the middle east!
Why not also look at how the Jews were Phucked over in their history? You might get some balance.
