firefly - Dude, being on stage and being in your home are two ENTIRELY different things.

c'mon.

try again

If youre looking for a perfect exact replica Im sure I cant satisfy you. Feel free to ignore the others all you like. I pity you. You live in the past and refuse to try to grow. Youre the problem not the solution.
misterearl @ 7/24/2009 12:05 PM
Compare and Contrast

firefly - I asked you to cite a similar example of "home arrest" to back your point. You have not been able to find one. You instead relate some unrelated random stories with absolutely nothing in common to the Henry Louis Gates case being discussed.

I will accept that as a concession.

How are they random? Theyre all stories of a professor being arrested for breaching the peace for not a good reason and later released. How could that possibly have
"absolutely nothing in common to the Henry Louis Gates case being discussed."
?

Youre running out of hairs to split here.

I pity the foo'

" I pity you. You live in the past and refuse to try to grow. Youre the problem not the solution."

firefly - don't you find it the least bit interesting that when people get challenged on to provide just ONE single shred of relevant evidence, yet cannot, they are only left with the last resort of more personal comments?

You damn skippy, about one thing

I AM the problem.

I am THE problem

I am the problem

Dude, Henry Louis Gates was at his crib and proved it was his crib

Old Indian principal:
Do not see intension behind other people mistakes
Both sides made mistakes in this case.
And both sides assumed that the actions of other side was intentional (racism, liberalism, etc.)
We are always looking for confirmations of our dogmas. And who is looking will always find... or will imagine...

Hey i just learned about this in class this month. This is called Confirmation bias. It is very very strong and people do not know that they are under its influence. We see what we look for.
In psychology and cognitive science, confirmation bias is a tendency to search for or interpret new information in a way that confirms one's preconceptions and to irrationally avoid information and interpretations which contradict prior beliefs. Confirmation bias is a type of cognitive bias and represents an error of inductive inference, or as a form of selection bias toward confirmation of the hypothesis under study or disconfirmation of an alternative hypothesis.

And heres a whole list http://www.lawkt.com/files/Disturbing_Th...

Why are we going through this pointless rigmarole? Youre never going to believe that the cops treated Gates the same way they would have a white man. Thats your issue, not the cops'. Youre certinly doing more harm then good IMO.

Pitching A Shutout

rembee - where you been?

The only "college professor being busted at the crib for being pissed" case I have is HLGates

The score is 1 to 0

Right Earl, but still waiting for the "college professor busted at the crib for being black" evidence. And should firefly come up with the perfect parallel despite all odds, it wouldn't have one shred of relevance to this case.

Where I been? When did I leave?

Apologies for making it personal. Anyone (not just Earl) who immediately feel that this is racial discrimination without further researching the specifics (and in my and many others opinions concluding it was not racism) is the problem with racial tensions today. If not for people like that, maybe, slowly we could grow. But as long as you refuse to believe any other reality, you ARE the problem.

The Game - absolutely brilliant and dead on point.

Thank You

As one who has been pulled over by the police as an imagined suspect in a robbery, only to open my car door with several guns pointed at me - within a last breath of any false move of being shot - I can testify that it is not a comfortable feeling.

I asked for a badge number only to have my drivers license thrown at me.

When is opening your car door before a cop can approach ever a good idea?
misterearl @ 7/24/2009 12:27 PM
Nightmare

kam77 - the loudspeaker on the police car demanded that i get out of the car with my hands up.

I did as I was told and am thankful that I can talk about it

Crowley said he tried to determine whether there was someone else at the home and wanted to ensure Gates' safety.

Gates, however, told him "that I had no idea who I was 'messing' with" and was being so loud that he could not give pertinent information to the department when he was calling in, the sergeant said.

Authorities have said they may release tapes of the officer calling in, in which Gates is heard in the background

Crowley's report said that when he asked to speak with Gates outside, the professor at one point responded, "I'll speak with your mama outside."

Not taking a position on this...just saying that shit is funny.

Diversity Training 101

Gates: "I'll speak with your mama outside."

rembee - the respectable Sargeant Crowley was totally unaware of the correct response, "oh yeah, well yo' momma is so fat..."

It was all downhill after that.

More and more evidence is mounting that Gates was indeed arrested for being an ass.

Your mama?

Yeah, i'd arrest him too.
