Off Topic · My raw honey was just delivered, some observations (page 1)

orangeblobman @ 1/6/2010 11:10 AM
So I got some raw honey from an internet shop and it just arrived. It has parts of bees, it says, and little pieces of honeycomb. But it's unlike any other honey I've ever seen! First, it's solid but malleable. You can stick a knife in it and it will penetrate, but not very far. It also has a peanut butter color. Hopefully, my health improves after I eat this honey daily for a week or two. Has anyone had any experience with honey?
nyk4ever @ 1/6/2010 11:27 AM
LOL wtf!!!

OBM, I'm beginning to think you are that guy from the Dos Equis commercials

orangeblobman @ 1/6/2010 11:38 AM
hahaha. yea, not now, but I could be at his age.

but really, it seems that real honey, as opposed to the store bought processed honey, has a ton of health benefits. so i try. we see.

they seem to be concentrated at the top of the jar, for whatever reason. but yea, you would eat them. the label describes this as such:
"When you open the jar, you'll see the honey "cappings": crunchy bits of honeycomb, pollen and propolis (*the bee parts) in hues of brown, gold and amber. These nutrient-rich Crown Jewels of -brand name- honey can be chewed just like gum."

jimimou @ 1/6/2010 12:13 PM
blob - you are right on this one. i have eaten the same stuff. it is SO much better for you than regular honey but you gotta make sure it doesnt go bad on you - very important to keep it refrigerated after you first open. when you first opened it, you needed to stir it also right?

i believe its organic as well correct?

They have honey shops here in Libya... shops dedicated to honey.

They have three types: single flower, multiple flower, and cedar honey. I think (I'm not 100 percent) the single flower is the cheap stuff, the honey that comes from many flowers is the gourmet stuff, and the honey that comes form cedar trees they make special dishes from.

They swear they have health benefits. I'm not sure which is the one that's supposed to be the best one to get healthy, but it's either cedar or multi-flower. They cell sachets of the ground up honeycomb too. As for the gorund up bees... I dunno dude

Nalod @ 1/6/2010 1:05 PM

Why is Honey Good for You?

Many people often ask "Why is honey good for you?", "Is this sweetener really more superior than table sugar?". The answer is a clear "Yes!"

1) It is nutritious for you!: A much healthier choice than over-processed, factory-made table sugar table sugar and artificial sweeteners which do not have any vitamins or whatsoever nutrients, this natural liquid from the honey bees contains many vitamins like B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and certain amino acids and minerals including calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.

2) It is a healthy food choice!: Honey has a healthy Glycemic Index (GI) , meaning that its sugars can be gradually absorbed into the bloodstream to result in better digestion. Eating excessive high-glycemic foods prompts an elevated insulin release in our body as a result of the pancreas being stimulated to metabolize the sudden surge of glucose into the blood.

3) It builds your immunity against sicknesses!: Honey contains natural antioxidant properties that can destroy biologically destructive chemical agents which have been linked to many diseases such as cancer. Not only could honey’s antioxidants help to eliminate free radicals in the body, they are also part of the nutrient supply for growth of new tissue. Because of this, for centuries, honey has been used all over the world in different cultures as a natural cure for many ailments, and traditionally as an effective home remedy, for instance the honey and apple cider vinegar tonic which is used for treating arthritis and bad breath.

4) It energizes you!: This perhaps is the most common reply kids get from their parents when they ask "why is honey good for you?" A great natural source of carbohydrates which provide strength and energy to our bodies, honey is known for its effectiveness in instantly boosting the performance, endurance and reduce muscle fatigue of athletes. Its natural fruit sugars, fructose and glucose plays an important role in preventing fatigue during exercise and are quickly absorbed into the bloodstream digested by the body. Also, honey is free of cholesterol and it has been reported that adding small amounts of it in the daily diet could even help keep cholesterol levels in check.

5) It beautifies you!: This anti-aging benefit of honey is probably the best reply to "Why is honey good for you?" There exist a huge number of honey products in the market for hair care, baby care, skin care for sunscreen, hand lotions, facial scrubs and moisturizers. Honey’s hygroscopic properties also make it an ideal cosmetic ingredient as it helps keep skin hydrated and fresh and prevents drying. Its natural antioxidant and anti-microbial properties also support the skin's ability to rejuvenate and refresh depleted skin, leaving it feeling silky soft and supple.

Heck, I thought that "raw honey" was some code name for a sexy mail order bride from Thailand.

I only opened this thread expecting photos.

As you can expect, I am disappointed.

This sounds like some really healthy stuff. You ask what to do with it? Might as well eat some every day! It is much more flavorful than commercial honey.

Having wax, propolis, etc - Your honey is probably unheated, raw but filtered however they leave a little of the wax, etc which rises to the top. You can chew on that and then spit out the wax. The rest is very good for you. Don't mix the top into the rest of the honey as you will be eating wax with every spoonful.

According to AyurVeda (natural system of health from India) heating honey to high temperatures (read-commercial honey sold in supermarkets) destroys its health giving properties. They also say that honey is very good in the winter as it gives heat and strength to the body. So your honey should be fine. Enjoy it.

Propolis isn't bee parts. See below.

Bees create propolis by collecting a resinous sap from trees and then mixing it with wax back at the hive. They use this material much the way people use caulk: to seal their homes. Chemically, propolis is exceedingly complex and contains a rich variety of potent terpenes and benzoic, caffeic, cinnamic, and phenolic acids. It's also high in flavonoids, which by themselves may account for many of the benefits attributed to propolis-and some researchers refer to propolis as a type of flavonoid.

One of the most significant medical journal articles described how the caffeic acids in propolis and honey might prevent colon cancer, which kills some 60,000 Americans each year. Chinthalapally V. Rao, Ph.D., of the American health Foundation, Valhalla, N.Y., reported in Cancer Research (Sept.15,1993; 53:1482-88) that these caffeic acids prevented the formation of precancerous tissue in rats after they were exposed to cancer-causing chemicals.

OB - I didn't know you were such a health nut. Where does the "blob" fit in?

Allanfan20 @ 1/7/2010 10:43 AM
So you do actually eat the honeycomb?
Markji @ 1/7/2010 11:55 AM
Allanfan20 wrote:So you do actually eat the honeycomb?

No, just chew on the honeycomb and suck out all of the honey and other nutrients. The waxy part is pretty tastless - it tastes like wax. Although some people may eat the wax as well, I don't think the wax has nutritional value.

When people say they are eating/buying/selling honeycomb they are referring to the structure pulled out of the beehive that consists of the waxy frame(beeswax) that is filled with fresh, raw, unheated delicious honey.

Allanfan20 @ 1/7/2010 12:16 PM
Oh wow. So the honey comb is chewy? It looks crunchy. Maybe ill have to get a jar of some raw honey.
jusnice @ 1/7/2010 2:29 PM
How do the girls like it when you propolis all over them? Better than bukkake?
