Knicks · JR Smith might be available (page 1)

Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, who played just six minutes in Wednesday night's Game 2, said there's a "strong possibility" he won't sign with the Nuggets this summer as a free agent, expressing frustration Thursday after the Nuggets went down 0-2 against Oklahoma City in the playoffs.

"There's a strong possibility as of right now," Smith said. "It's not going the way I planned it to go. It's a tough situation. I want to be here, I love the fans and everything about the city. It's just maybe not my fit."

The Nuggets had a team meeting on Thursday and Smith said the team didn't have "a pulse" as they regrouped at Pepsi Center.

"Just frustration, just really didn't have any life in there," Smith said. "No one was really into it."

Smith said he didn't get an explanation for why he played so few minutes (he went 1-for-6 from the field and was minus-17, causing coach George Karl to say that the "floodgates opened" when Smith was on the court).
"I'm not worried about my shots," Smith said. "That's one of the things I was here for, I thought. If they ask me to play, I'll play. If not, I'll just cheer for my teammates."

Asked about the floodgates quote, Smith said, "I don't read the quotes any more. I don't even want to get into that. If he asks me to play, I'll play, if not, I won't. It's kind of getting ridiculous."
Karl was asked Thursday about Smith's comments.

"I don't know how to answer that," Karl said quietly. "I hope he's ready to play on Saturday and will be in a situation to bounce back."

Karl was told that Smith felt that if he isn't clicking on the court right away, that Smith feels he won't get a second chance. The coach replied: "He gives us minus-17 in six minutes. Those guys shouldn't get second chances. I'm not saying it was all his fault, I'm just saying - when that happens, I got to make a change."

Smith is a fool on the court sometimes but he is the best SG available this summer.

I liked Smith back in the day but he has turned into the definition of knucklehead.
nixluva @ 4/21/2011 7:57 PM
JR is a nut but he can do things we need. Imagine the impact of a deadly SG in our rotation? It would further spread the floor and he'd be a more effective scoring option. As he matures he should calm down.

*Imagines JR playing in D'Antoni's system*

Yeah no thanks...

Let some terrible team pay him to be their number one option, it's his destiny.

JR Smith is still 25 years old and is a major upgrade of Fields. With that said, we dont have the money for him anyway.
BigSm00th @ 4/21/2011 9:04 PM
offseason needs: more size, defense, and rebounding.

JR gives us none of those.

fields will be keep improving.

Allanfan20 @ 4/21/2011 9:46 PM
Jamal Crawford is better than JR Smith.... and Id be very mad if we got even him. Hell no to Smith.
Childs2Dudley @ 4/21/2011 9:54 PM
Everyday I see why Anubis supported Isiah.
tkf @ 4/21/2011 10:07 PM
keep that mental midget away from my team.. thanks..

Who says D'Antoni will even be here next year or after that? You dont not get premium talent because of the coach.

Depending on Fields to MAYBE become a starting caliber SG is way to risky. Amare isnt getting any younger. Every year is one year closer to Amare breaking down. Time is not on our side. We need PROVEN vets.

Jamal Crawford is 31 this year while Smith is 26. We need guys to add to our core going forward.

AnubisADL @ 4/21/2011 10:40 PM
JR Smith is the best SG we are going to be able to realistically get. We aren't fleecing a young SG from a team for peanuts.

C's, PG's, and SG's come at a premium. Just ask Kyle Korver.

We arent going to get a perfect player with the MLE.

babyKnicks @ 4/21/2011 10:52 PM
You guys are kidding me.
Center or point guard only.

I'm pretty sure we can all agree that's what we need

babyKnicks @ 4/21/2011 10:56 PM
Correction. Anabus, you are killing me. Fields ALREADY is a starting SG and YOUNGER.

not seeing the argument. Even playoff stats fields is better.

Do you just like the kid or something and dont really care about knick needs?

Landry Fields is a SF playing SG. Dude has weak handle and watching him trying to create offense hurts my eyes.

This fascination with rookies when we have 2 stars is funny. We need vets. We dont need guys that maybe will turn into the player we want them to be in a few years..

Do you expect Melo and Amare to play 48 minutes a game for the next 4 years? We need to be able to have a 3rd and 4th player who can CONSISTENTLY shoot/score the ball.

I agree we need a center and PG. The thing is Dalembert is the best center prospect and there is no great PG free agent this summer.

babyKnicks @ 4/21/2011 11:10 PM
Actually. Fields played PF at Stanford I believe.

I don't expect us to add ANOTHER scorer...I mean chucker...we have two stars. I'm pretty sure we can all agree that we have enough chuckers now.

Do you have ANY stats that show that he is better than any SG on our roster?

One stat. He's a volume chucker that depends on being hot. He does not start curretly.

Snap out of It.

JR Smith Positives:

- ability to create his own offense
- ability to handle the ball and break down his man
- ability to finish at the rim
- ability to finish above the rim
- ability to excel in the open floor
- Unlimited range
- Above average shooter
- Proven ability to score in the PLAYOFFS

If you think Bill Walker, Landry Fields, or Roger Mason are currently starting caliber SG's then no need to discuss further.

You're right. You win.

I'll stick to field goal percentage, 3 percentage, rebounds per game, defense and age with fields.

You stick to opinions and highlight videos.

My bad.

Landry Fields has better stats than alot of NBA SG's. He has better percentages and rebounds than Kobe Bryant. So what.

Reality is Landry Fields has weak handle and has difficulty creating his own shot. Im still waiting for Wilson Chandler to develop that SG handle.
