Yes, but not because is Flynn is that much better at PG. He just has a better chance at being a good PG than Douglas, who clearly has made 0 progress at that position in his 2 years in the league.
GustavBahler@ 6/19/2011 7:27 AM
I posted about bringing Flynn to NY a few months ago, seems his value has dropped since Rubio signed. He came off hip surgery last year which accounts for his numbers. Flynn can get to the rim pretty easily and can shoot the three but he is turnover prone. As I said back then, he would be an upgrade over TD.
franco12@ 6/19/2011 7:29 AM
No - I'm not sure Flynn is an NBA player. Both off surgery, but Douglas played through it.
Whether Douglas can be the back up PG for D'Antoni's system doesn't matter as much as the fact that Douglas is an NBA player, Flynn is a question mark in my book.
Why did Dallas win? Dirk, yes, but Jason Terry as a scoring combo guard off the bench was the difference- and that is a role TD could grow into.

I don't see TD turning into Terry any time soon. Flynn averaged 13/4 his rookie year so he's already proved he can play in the NBA. Two different types of injuries, not an indication of toughness or lack thereof. Whether Flynn can get back to 100 percent is another matter. His ability to break down defenses makes him worth the gamble IMO.

I think TD has accomplished more so far, but that Flynn could be much more. He is a better facilitator too. He played like Kemba Walker in his last Big East tournament. Flynn plays more like a point than Douglas and I think he makes more sense as a rotation player, especially if the Knicks draft a SG.
unstopaball12@ 6/19/2011 9:35 AM
hmmmm its dumb for minny to do this deal. They want to get rid of a point guard for a another one? haha
babyKnicks@ 6/19/2011 9:36 AM
I'd rather Rubio....can't we just get Rubio? For TD and a body?
Olbrannon@ 6/19/2011 9:41 AM
Flynn had more ability to play above the rim than TD if he still has that explosion yeah probably. But TD could play JET's role quite well at this point and could be more. Making the transition has not been easy for him. He has shown signs of real progress. Shame he was injured most of the year. Many might sing a different tune. Would certainly form a change of pace with Rubio but unlikely to be his final stop if this goes down.
crzymdups@ 6/19/2011 10:00 AM
HECK NO.
I'd rather keep toney and draft Darius Morris. Those guys could play side by side.
Flynn can be an effective back-up to the knicks, not douglas.
Douglas shoots too much without even running the offense while he's on the floor.
Douglas is a good on ball defender but it's his leadership role on the floor as a pg i questioned.
martin@ 6/19/2011 10:39 AM
Flynn was playing PG in prob the worst type of offense for a PG: Triangle. He's not a spot up shooter like Derek Fisher and that Offensive scheme takes the ball out of the hands of a PG.
Injury and bad system. Flynn may yet have some potential.
And a half season under MDA might pump up his value for CP3. I gotta believe that this is the real angle.
loweyecue@ 6/19/2011 10:50 AM
I have not seen enough of Flynn, but I have seen enough of Douglas and would trade him for the right piece. We don't need heroes we need a point guard which he is not and will never be. He plays good defense though so that has to be weighed in as well.
But TD does not run the offense he basically just looks to score when he gets stuck trying to drive he eventually passes the rock but has no court vision that I am aware of.
Nalod@ 6/19/2011 11:07 AM
Its not what flynn has been but what he could. In the right system can he be enhanced?
TD is great and I like the kids grit and swagger.
But as a tweener he has value but its not a priority. We need to move Fields to small forward/2 6th man and we need a 2 which we might get in the draft. Jonny Flynn can do this. Marshon Brooks or Klay Thompson can be our 2. These may be the best players available.
But suprises do happen and players fall.
The Big we need is another story.
Markji@ 6/19/2011 11:17 AM
If Flynn has fully recovered from his hip surgery and can accelerate like before the surgery I would do it. Even though I am a big fan of TD, Flynn fits our needs better.
A second consideration is that we need to throw in another player to meet 80% matching salary for Flynn (= $2.73 mil). And that player would have to be Balkman who has 2 years left on his contract. Then we eliminate Balkman's 2012 salary from our cap but have Jonny Flynn to either keep or trade. Probably would have to throw in $1 to $2 Mil to cover Balkman's salary for 2012 but it is worth it.
2011 Salaries Flynn $3.414 Mil
Toney D $1.15 Mil Balkman $1.675 Mil

Silly question, but are we over the cap at the moment that we can't absorb Flynn in a straight up trade?

correct.

Flynn has greater upside and i see as a better long-term PG. I would have to say yes to this.
Markji@ 6/19/2011 12:37 PM
Jonny Flynn highlights - his first year before the hip injury.
earthmansurfer@ 6/19/2011 12:54 PM
A hip injury can be serious. Does anyone know about Flynn's? If he is going to be ok, then this is a no brainer. You trade a player drafted 30 for one drafted 6 - all things being equal. We need a backup (or starting PG) more than we need TD's offensive abilities, that is the truth considering out team. Flynn is not a liability on offense, at least not from inside the three point line. His last year in school (think he came out after two years) he averaged just under 7 assists a game and 1.4 steals. We could use that.

Depending on what we give up it wouldn't be a bad deal.
Im just worried about his size and longevity over an 82 game season.
If we can get him for a deal like
Flynn and Webster(Salary dump) for Douglas and Turiaf(expiring)
Minny would get rid of 2 redundant injury prone players and the Knicks get a PG and a Solid Shooter.
