Knicks · Jeremy Lin is a true PG and a free agent (Knicks get him!) (page 10)

Olbrannon - A Washington DC cab driver once asked me, "what is common sense?"

He added, "If it not something that everyone has, then it is not common."

Hit the open man.

... and please don't take all day deciding to do it.

Didn't George W go to Yale? Pretty sure that gives him the edge over President Obama on the court :-)

But then again, Pres Obama is ivy league as well. Hmmmm maybe we need those guys in our backcourt.

KNICKSBIGCATS @ 12/27/2011 6:31 PM
Man, we ARE passionate fans, no doubt.....
Now seven pages devoted to the acquisition of a
3rd string PG project (hopefully MUCH more) with a high BB IQ
claimed off the waiver wire!

No one can say that we don't love our Knickerbockers!

wikipedia is actually rather useful though it is best to double check.

guess Athletes are not the only people they lower their standards for! Apparently cheerleaders also make the cut. Now let's debate whether heeeading qualifies as athletics over the next 7 pages.

LOL....love it!
BTW, my opinion is that cheerleaders are good athletes!

Is high IQ more important for ball players than is is for cheerleaders? That is the question we must ask ourselves

It's what you expect the common person to have, which makes it really frustrating when you encounter someone that doesn't.
It's not called Everyone Sense.

Hey Lin went to college and seems to be smart enough to qualify to be there. It's better than some school that doesn't have ANY standards when it comes to its student athletes. I don't think it's that big of a deal overall, but as a plus in his corner it's good to know he can play and may have a good head on his shoulders too. Can't hurt to have another good kid on the roster with some common sense.

Exactly.

Lin (Harvard) and Fields (Stanford) can debate the virtues of their respective schools on the team bus.

It is a match made in hoops heaven.

Kinda reminds me of our former Rhodes scholar, "Dollar Bill" Bradley.
All VERY cerebral players, Misterearl.

Are you guys flippin' for real? Who gives a rats ass that he went to Harvard?
This is basketball, not a damn court of law or labratory? I got my Masters at a pretty damn good school and get my ass handed to me by high school drop outs every time I step on the playground. You guys are hilarious.

Why? They are not saying anyone going to Harvarf can play ball, they are saying this guy with real NBA talent may have an extra edge because he is smarter than the average baller. Why is having a fully functioning brain considered a handicap for athletes? Do you really prefer the Marbury/Nate type? A thinking player with average skills can be much more useful than some athletic freak who isn't smart enough to walk and talk at the same time ( See Anthony Randolph).

I don't believe that one would have an extra edge. Ball is ball.
I never said its a handicap, I said its not correlated.

OK this topic is being beaten to death so I am sure one more completely useless post won't matter.
I am not sure how you can say there's no correlation? Correlation of what and what? Are you saying a smart person capable of making good decisions and learning new things quickly is not better equipped all other things being the same? If so I really don't know what to tell you.

I will say this though if it comes down to a PG making critical decisions at crunch time I would much rather go with Lin or a high IQ player than the Nate Robinsons of the world.

Are people still acting like Lin will be here long-term?

Man, every single guy we sign we make a big deal about. The guy will end up being the 15th man at the end of the season (if we're lucky enough to have everyone healthy) and people are acting like he's the savior at PG.

I like the guy too but he's nothing more than a bench player on a deep team.

I admit I am worried about our PG situation and the injury risk. I would like to see us kepp him or a third string PG as insurance. Maybe we waive Toney Douglas if Lin proves himself better, IDK. I am no expert on contracts etc. But TD isn't getting it done (same as all year last year).

I don't like Douglas either but he is a better scorer than Lin and definitely isn't worth waiving. You can at least get a draft pick for him.

Still, I don't think Lin has much of an impact to supplant anyone as the backup/starter or even make Toney expendable.

Q. Panos - I got my Masters at a pretty damn good school and get my ass handed to me by high school drop outs every time I step on the playground.

A. Perhaps you need to work on your defensive stance and footwork. Zumba classes are forming now. I got my masters at a pretty good school and deal up those high school dropouts every chance I get.

Q. Panos - Who gives a rats ass that he went to Harvard?

A. No one, really. It's cited more a fun fact in the same manner Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, because we know ALL Ivy League types are soft, right?

Q. Panos - Are you guys flippin' for real?

A. Absolutely. We have a Jeremy Lin fan club and everything. We are juiced.

Was the fan club salvaged from the remnants of the Devi Green club, that formed to the left? Or was it the right, I've lost track...

I think Lin was a great pick up. I think he has a lot more potential than a guy like Rautins and he is a few years younger. I hope he gets minutes.
TheloniusMonk @ 12/27/2011 8:45 PM
Books smarts and making split second judgements are not the same thing at all. Some people are great authors but give bad interviews. Study well but are not witty etc.

Personally, I love how Knick fans really get into every player on a 15 man roster. At the same time, this is why it's so hard for the Knicks to attract and keep talented players. Players like Lin (for example) might look very average under the bright lights / NY Media, but above average during summer league play.

One thing is for sure, if he can shine in NY, with fans and the media commenting on every single play he makes or doesn't make.....he will be special.

I think he's more than just the 15th roster spot on this team. Just imagine if you can groom him and Shump to be solid PG's / playmakers. These are the cheap pieces every championship team needs.

Also, if Jefferies and all the other bums that played for NY can stick around for a long time, this kid should be able to at least replace Bibby full time come next season....at the very least. But I would not be mad if he's also used to get a solid pick in next yrs draft. I'm hearing this draft will be solid.

I joined because I have seen Lin play from Harvard, to GS, to Reno, to Houston (my friend who was a fan took me to see him live). He is an excellent PG who is arguably even better on defense than on offense at this stage of his career. Saw a couple of questions about defense and pick and roll--those are probably his two greatest strengths. He plays great position defense and still picks up big steals and blocks numbers; he also draws charges and helps out his teammates with quick and strong hands. I also saw poor man's Steve Nash, but in my opinion, his style is actually more like Joe Dumars or a young Jason Kidd. He is very athletic, but never showboats, so you don't often see it, as he just gets the job done. He repeatedly blew by the Spurs in preseason (3 driving layups and a look-away assist for a layup in only 5 minutes of playing time as he brought the Rockets back from 10 down to a tie game on his last driving layup). Lin got cut from Houston as he was the only unguaranteed contract out of the 15 players there, in order to make way for signing Dalembert.

The biggest knock on Lin has been his mechanics on his outside shot, but he corrected it over the summer with a shooting coach and drilled a bunch of three-pointers in an exhibition game. I for one am thrilled he is on the biggest stage and can't wait to see how he performs.

Waiving TD if Lin proves himself better? Hold on, folks, this is getting insane.

TD may not be a point guard and may still need to improve in certain areas, but he is still a very talented player that brings a lot to the table both offensively and defensively. His best use is coming off the bench as instant offense, but until we get a better starting PG (waiting for Baron), he is our starter at 1.

Lin is a young undrafted PG that has been waived by a few teams already. Yeah, its been because they need the roster spot, but still. He hasn't even suited up for NY and now he will make TD expendable? Geez, guys, come back to earth.

I hope Lin turns out to be a good signing and makes it hard to waive him, but don't make it look like its the second coming of Nash.
